University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

I have no knowledge of the review process that a university uses so what follows is complete conjecture. But I wonder if the whole process is kind of a crapshoot. I imagine a university has some quantitative metrics they use to filter the candidates but nowadays it seems like all good students have great stats, great ECs, great essays. How do they truly tell them apart especially when they get 10s of thousands of applications. After filtering, is it the luck of the draw of who you get as a reviewer? In other words, could a candidate be denied by one reviewer but if a different reviewer had done the review they would have been accepted? Maybe this is what they mean by “holistic”?

Yeah, I know. This whole process is frustrating for all but I suppose it’s not worth questioning what we have no control over. @rjkofnovi

I don’t buy the story. And the stat is far from overqualified anyway.

@trackmbe3 I do agree with what you are saying and understand what the deferral meant regarding not needing extra recommendations, essays etc. I don’t know that I would say we are overthinking it (?) re the LOCI but decided to go with the advice of the counselor (though still doubt if that was the right decision)
You asked about stats:
ACT: 35
GPA: 3.9
APs: 6 + honors classes
OOS

:-S

@positivitea I don’t think I am VERY confident about anything regarding my application. I’m not sure what you were meaning. We haven’t sent a LOCI but are considering. I was only trying to communicate what our thought process was at that point and how the letter seemed strongly worded. I appreciate you sharing your own experience though and it gives us another angle to look at it from.

My S did finally send a LOCI on the recommendation of his counselor. He sent it to the regional admissions director rather than to the admissions office. As much as we would want otherwise, there are a lot of gray areas in the world of admissions to highly selective colleges. But that’s why I’m a huge proponent of discussion sites like this one, which tries to lift the veil a little bit.

@BearGirl92 The fact that you doubt your decision in not doing a LOCI should tell you something. Go with your GUT. Trust your instincts. In life you have to make decisions for yourself because nobody cares about your interest more than you do. Please listen to what me and others here are telling you here on CC. We know from experience esp. with respect to Michigan. Unfortunately your guidance Counselor is not giving you the right advice. If you want a “blessing” from someone in authority at your school before you proceed with a LOCI you should seek a second opinion if you can’t trust your own instincts.

Have you guys sent your LOCI with your recent grades?

Has anyone else noticed their ‘decision’ tab is gone now from the Application Status page?

@UMhopeful12 mine is still there. Applying to LSA

@UMhopeful12 Also still there and I noticed our mid-year transcript is now updated so that is working…

@BearGirl92 Didn’t mean to offend - meant it rhetorically. I know how stressful this entire process is. Sometimes we have to find a way to stand out or else be swept in with the crowd. I wish you much success.

Who should I send my LOCI to?

@hunter21 Send the LOCI to your regional admissions officer/recruiter. You can find that information here: https://admissions.umich.edu/contact-us
Just as an FYI, the day after my S emailed his LOCI, he received an email from the regional admissions officer stating, “Thank you for your message. I’ve made a note of your continued interest within your application file so that it can be considered in our final review. Please submit your first semester/trimester grades when they become available so that they may be included in our evaluation process. Other than your updated grades, we ask that you do not submit any additional materials at this time.”

Where do I have to go to check that they got my mid-year report?

Go to your credentials, and see if the date your grades were submitted has changed to 2018.

@collegebound1212 Accepted students declare a major at the end of their sophomore year - until then, they expect you to explore.

Your intended major was likely discussed in your essay? Unless you are talking about applying to a different college (LSA, CoE, Ross…), your application has already been submitted and sealed.

Is there a good chance the first wave of deferral decisions will come out next friday?

what is an LOCI?

@berkeley101 Letter of Continued Interest.
