My S sent a LOCI in this Sunday evening and got a response first thing Monday morning.
@WolverineDream Where did you get that info? It sounds like in that movie.
Has anyone received a denial yet?
@billcsho - Son is at UM. Recruited athlete. When he was going through the process, his admissions rep referenced meeting dates where they put candidates forward at particular times. I guess I assumed that meant they sat down as a committee at some kind of regular interval and passed on candidates. Now that I’m reading what I said, it’s probably really impractical to do that way. Do you think the admissions folks just handle them as they come across their desk?
My son sent in his LOCI yesterday and received a reply within the hour. It was the generic letter that did not mention advocating for his admission and seemed to encourage him to look elsewhere. He has a 4.6 weighted GPA, all AP course load doubling up on math every year, 35 on ACT. Played AA travel hockey since middle school but because of that schedule, had little other EC other than volunteer work. Had hoped that he would be competitive for a spot at University of Michigan but now he’s starting to doubt that he will get into LSA. Looking forward to and dreading every Friday until we know for sure!!
@hockeymom2000 Those are really good stats and I think the LOCI will push him through soon. That’s my gut feel anyway - not that I work for the school
@WolverineDream I guess the recruited athletes may have a different admission process. They are expecting 70k applications that come in over the last few months. It would be hard to set a fixed schedule to review certain number of application each week. There was a newspaper article about the UMich admission process a few years ago. I think the title is something like how do we process 50k (or 40k?) applications. That would be a valid reference.
Here is that article:

@billcsho That’s great Bill! Thank you. I wonder what happens with the deferrals though. Reading that article, I am guessing that both the first and second reviewers felt our kids (deferred students) should be deferred. Do you suppose they put notes in the file like “wait for spring grades” or “needs to show interest” or “Hopefully they do some phenomenal civic thing?” - or do they pick them up and start over after 2/1?
This is my S LOCI response back.Is this good or bad?
“We will continue to advocate for your application during regular decision. Please know that if worse comes to worst that you could always apply to be a transfer student.”
Deferral basically means to be evaluated again as RD applicants. They do recommend all deferral to send in mid year report as many RD applicants would have that on the transcript but not from EA applicants. It just make them on a fair ground for comparison. Obviously, good grades in mid year report would help. In some cases, they don’t even need that to make decision. They said in another article that the EA and RD have similar criteria. It just have a different goal to fulfill. Many admittable candidates were just off the goal limit and need to wait for the RD round.
Note that they only focus on admission. It is not both think a candidate should be deferred to make it a deferral. It is the other way. When both think one should be admitted then offer the admission. Whoever not admitted in EA is deferred automatically including those that were no and no, yes and no, yes and maybe, etc.
For rolling admission in RD, they do not wait till 2/1 to decide or start the reviewing process. Otherwise, it is not possible to start the admission release last Friday.
Is there a tab on the portal where my mid-year report would appear? My counselor just submitted my grades this morning but I want to be on the lookout when they receive anything.
@BLONDIECHI2017 under view credentials it will update the date on your transcript to whenever they downloaded it
@EthanAz1 does the view decision tab ever go away?
Can anyone read my LOCI to see if there is anything that would turn them off? Thanks!
I wish it would for me
@jj1999 sure, you can PM me.
Does anyone know how much being a primary legacy helps with admission?
My decision button is still there but there has been no change…When I click it it just shows the deferral letter :((
