@billcsho Do you have an estimate as to how many applications were rec’d this year for EA & RD?
any chance of decisions today or tomorrow?
are decision tabs starting to disappear again?
@KMN345 They said they have received over 38,000 EA this year which is near 20% increase from last year. They have not announced the total application number this year yet. It is likely to be more or less proportional to the EA increase. If that is the case, there would be around 72,000 total applications.
I’m really worried right now. Although I was deferred and didn’t HAVE to submit my first semester grades (I got the “good” deferral letter), I still wanted to. I requested for my school to submit my grades today and am worried UM won’t recieve my grades in time when reevaluating my application. Should I be concerned?
@UofMich What is the “Good” deferral letter you are talking about? I have heard of different versions of replies to LOCI. I didn’t know there were different versions of the deferral letter itself.
This is what my deferral letter said. They didn’t require that I send my grades in:
Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2018. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.
While we recognize this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, perhaps particularly so because of your family ties with the University, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2018.
@UofMich Hmm. My daughter’s is identical to yours - except it goes on:
Strong recent grades that are available before mid-February 2018 may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2080 for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next.
We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.
Michigan is definitely focused on yield protection. Two kids with perfect stats deferred (one already admitted to Harvard) while classmates with lower stats accepted.
There is no good or bad deferral letter. They told all deferred applicants to submit mid year report on their blog.
Does this mean my email means I’m most likely not getting in?
Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2018. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2018. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by early April.
@Deaston They want good students that would attend. They did admit high stat students in the EA which showed interest to the school throughout the application including the essays. For sure they do not want to admit students who is not likely to attend. This is not yield protection or Tufts Symdrome as there is no overqualified applicants, there are just applicants that do not show high interest. Their yield rate has been steadily going up and their admission stat too.
@Hiddle yeah it made me really worried as to whether or not they got the letter or not, but I am glad to know that I am not the only one. I sent a modified letter to my admissions counselor last night and got this as a reply:
"Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. The University received a record breaking 38,000 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive. Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class.
I appreciate the update and am impressed with all of your service and activities!
Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I would also encourage you to explore the other opportunities available to you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me again.
All the Best,
Evan Gerstein"
It seems pretty similar the letter most people have gotten but idk for sure…
Any thoughts?
It makes me curious as to whether or not they have multiple versions of the letters or if the counselors just add their own thoughts as they please to the regular outline.
@brownsie000 Based on what I’ve seen, they are all following the same script outline for the most part and making some changes here and there.
@csekar15 Yeah that’s pretty much what I am thinking considering there are probably tons of LOCIs that they get everyday. Honestly, I was pretty relieved I got a reply so fast before the next wave of decisions even if they didn’t bother to read all the way through the letter.
Hopefully we can all get some answers relatively soon… Otherwise I will be stressed to the max by the time April comes along with everyone still left waiting! <o_o></o_o>
@billcsho Sent you a PM when you have a cycle.
@brownsie000 I never received a reply after a month of sending an email so I decided to mail one. It arrived almost a week ago and I called and they said it takes up to 10 business days to put it on final that I sent one in. So not going to jump to anything yet even though Friday’s decisions are underway.
When do the decision tabs start to go away?
@EthanAz1 Last week, people reported them going away around 5 PM EST. At the same time, someone who talked to the Admissions office said that the next big wave will be on 2/16 and not this week. Though, they might have a small installment this week.
@BLONDIECHI2017 Do they send the reply once it is put on final or is it ten days after the send the reply? If the latter then that really sucks
