University of Michigan EA class of 2020 thread

How much does Michigan value legacy from your observations?

@NYDad513 , you are correct - many in-state students students who qualify for Michigan also apply elsewhere. Why not if there is no downside? Michigan has about 3000 spots for in-state freshman, roughly equal to the entire freshman class at Cornell. Maybe that well qualified student gets into an Ivy or near-Ivy via ED. Then Michigan is his/her backup school.

If Michigan were to implement ED and followed a typical ED admission pattern the risk for in-state students is going to be a lot higher. Far fewer RD spots would be available. For middle class Michigan families who don’t qualify for much FA, $14K tuition at Michigan vs $40K elsewhere is sound decision. It would also make those same Michigan families - and their kids who often look at the ‘local school’ with some contempt - understand what they have close by. Michigan is the one school that has it all for those in-state kids - great academics, great sports, beautiful campus , great value.

Anyone waiting to hear from STAMPS? We are (my daughter and I). She applied early to RISD and got rejected, but honestly, we’ve been so excited about Michigan since talking to them at NPD this last year, that I would have been disappointed if we couldn’t at least explore it further. It’s definitely at the top of her list.

I’m so anxious, I can’t even focus on finals

My (upper) middle class daughter chose a $40k school over UofM because it was cheaper. If you can get into a school which meets full need, that school can be a better option for a middle class in-state student than UofM with the little financial aid they offer.

wait what time?

Yes, @Han456 nice to see you too! Hopefully we get in, but tbh ill probs get deferred here too. As you more than anyone would know, my stats are mediocre at best.

Hey - this is my first post, I just spent an hour and a half out of my study time reading through 70 pages of forum from 2011. I just realized today that the decision can come at any time (I previously thought the release date was the 24th) and I’m freakin’ out. Anyone else on that same boat? Lol

Will all the emails sent out on the 18th be released at the same time? Like will people in California find out at the same time as people in Michigan? I know some schools do a rolling admission by region. Northeastern is slowly releasing all their emails during the span of four or five hours. Will UM do this? Thanks!

This is all speculation I assume?

I heard it would be released on Christmas because they wouldn’t make it in time from my counselor.

My advice to everyone: Spend your Friday chilling out with your friends, doing your hobbies, and having fun. You deserve it after a long, stressful semester. And if you so happen to get a text message on your phone and notice that you also have an email from umich, open it up and hope for the best! Don’t waste your time over contemplating the exact time it will come out. Michigan is really vague about this and you will be so much less stressed doing what you enjoy than you will be if you are sitting in front of a laptop refreshing your email.

@ErenYeager Not speculation. UMich has sent out most decisions on Friday (and the remaining waves after that) for years. The December 24th date is more like the lasttttt remaining wave and not many are sent out then.

@ErenYeager the website says “By December 24th”. People have previously commented on this thread that Michigan admissions counselors have said they are releasing decisions starting on Friday afternoon, and previous years indicate the same trend.

Do the decisions come through email or do we need to check our accounts on the website?

@WillStern The website is updated first with an email to follow. You can find out through both, but WA is faster in reporting it.

Thanks So much!

Anyone else from Florida that applied EA to Michigan?
