Official Fall 2018 transfer thread for the University of Michigan
Feel free to post any updates or questions on this thread regarding your application and your chances
I am currently applying to transfer to the University of Michigan for the Fall of 2018. It was super helpful to have a thread when I was applying in high school so that is why I wanted to make one now.
Hello everyone, would love some input from anyone on what you think on where I stand. I am a transfer student from MCC, I applied with 12 credits completed with a 4.0 GPA. I am registered for 16 credits for spring semester and an additional 4 credits in summer. I will have WRA101 completed and MTH will be in the summer. Will they give me admission for fall? My major would be business. Also my high school GPA was a 2.0 but I do meet 28 credits so I don’t need to include that in the app.
@collegelife19, you wont be considered a transfer unless you commit and follow through with your potential 32 credits. Prospective transfer students must adhere to the 30+ req for consideration. Time is a major factor because the deadline is Feb 1, and you will only have 12 credits respectively. Now if you speak with your assigned admissions counselor, they may be able to take into account several facets- potential credits, sustained g.p.a and projections based off of how you’ve been doing academically so far. As it stands, you do have a chance to explain continuation when you break down your past, current and future courses during the Common App for the “potential” 32 credits needed to be considered a transfer. Plus side, it may afford you a “leg in the door” which is what you need. Conversely, it could be damning if you deviate from your 4.0 between now and August. Hope this help and here are the req’s from UMich pertaining to transfer students https://admissions.umich.edu/apply/transfer-students. Best of luck.
Thanks for the excellent detailed response. I will definitely keep my 4.0 up. I just want to get in for Fall 2018 as my community college doesn’t offer a lot of classes that transfer and in general I want community college over with. I know 12 credits is a low starting point but I will definitely have the 32 with a 4.0 by end of summer. I’m just not sure when I can apply. I would avoid applying if my chances are slim which they seem right now.
Hi all! Currently going into my second semester as a sophomore at Holy Cross College, a 4 year institution in Indiana. 3.7 College GPA and 3.3 HS GPA. Club lacrosse and student newspaper in college. interning at Northwestern Mutual this summer. I’m wondering what kind of classes I would need to have completed to transfer as a Business major. most of my course load has been prereq liberal arts based. As of the end of next semester I will have completed Finite, Survey of Calc, Comp, British Literature 1 & 2, Public Speaking, theology, logic (philosophy), anthropology (at Notre Dame) , chem, physics (at St. Mary’s College), intro spanish 1 & 2, US History 1877-Present, Macroeconomics, Art History Survey 1, College Seminar 1 & 2 (freshman survey course that’s required), intro psychology. Like said I’d like to study business but I feel my liberal arts curriculum might make me not admittable to the business school at U of M. would I have a better chance of admission if applied as an English major (because of my curriculum)? I’m interested in prelaw, business, english, history, or sports management. Curious if anyone can give me insight on what major would be my best route to admission.
@shadj2221, best advice I can give is post on a current Ross thread if that’s your ultimate goal. As far as getting into UMich and best program, hands down you should apply LSA. To answer your question on pursuing an English major, you may want to look at equivalency for your courses. Here is a link that will help you establish what will transfer http://www.ugadmiss.umich.edu/TCE/Public/CT_TCESearch.aspx and help you gauge where you stand.
Although you have a few courses that are considered “rigorous”, your g.p.a can/could help/hurt you depending on what they take and whether or not you did well in a difficult class or bad in an easy one. To be honest, only admissions officers know what your best recourse is. If you want to do business and Ross is what you want, then I have no doubt that is where you’ll end up. Personally, I’m a psychology major who transferred from Indian, so I can only offer advice. As a person who attended I.U (did very well ‘A’s’ in comp I and comp II), I can tell you that UMich is HIGHLY SELECTIVE when it comes to English equivalences. Hope this helps, and I wish you nothing but the best.
Does anyone know when the admissions office holiday ends and will be open again?
Here are my statistics, if anyone can chance me, I would be very happy
- College GPA: 3.98 out of 4.0 including three mix courses of undergrads and grads
- High school GPA: 3.95 out of 4.0
- IELTS: 7.0 overall, with listening 6.0, reading 7.5, writing 7.0, and speaking 6.5
- Some physics and mathematics competitions prizes (including three nationals level, and 3 states level)
- Manager assistant in a local company
- Tutor in my high school (community service)
- Volunteer in Church
- No SAT reasoning test or ACT, but having perfect scores in SAT subject tests (Math level 2 and physics)
- In a college math competition (Putnam), I set the record of my current college all the time.(national rank seems to be top 300 or top 250?) I didn’t remember clearly
how many credits do you have? @tianyasijunbukewang
@U-MFAN
I have earned 45 credits totally (not including the two withdraw courses). However, I withdrew two courses during the first three semester, I withdrew circuit analysis 2 because it is too easy, and I don’t want to waste my time. I withdrew cultural anthropology because the workload of that course is heavy for me (a little too hard).
@tianyasijunbukewang, tbh, you have stellar academics regardless if you’re IS or OOS. Only thing that I can see hindering you is your common app essay and the supplemental essays if they aren’t strong. The fact that you didn’t take ACT/SAT won’t be factored in, nor will your high school transcripts at this point. Make sure you state your W/D reasons in detail and focus on what you have to offer, and why you want to attend Umich. As a recently accepted winter transfer, the best advice I can give is standout. Explain why you want to attend UMich (make a personal statement as to why you want to attend and what your goals are), what you bring to the table and where you plan on going after. Also, check out what courses you’ve taken that transfer and whether or not they’ll be accepted. Depending on your institution, be prepared to fill out in-depth equivalency forms stating the rigor of your course work and detailed accounts of what you did during each and every course you’re petitioning. I had to do this for English, but I didn’t for my science courses because I wanted to retake them to ensure a smooth transition (mainly to maintain my 4.0 and prepare for higher tier bio courses).
Here is their equivalency site http://www.ugadmiss.umich.edu/TCE/Public/CT_TCESearch.aspx for your current and potential credits.
https://umich.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/jfe/form/SV_77ifXGepGaadYdD this is the form you have to fill out explaining the rigor of courses if accepted. Hope this helped and best of luck to you.
@U-MFAN,all offices will be up and running Jan 1st at 9.00am
@dwane1
Thank you vary much. Hopefully, I can get into Umich. It is very helpful to me knowing that there is a petition transfer system.
@dwane1 Thank you!!

@mattmckenney7, if Ross is where you want to go, you should either create a new thread or post on a previous Ross thread. Now if you are just curious about whether or not you are a “solid” prospective transfer, then that is something I can help with. I’ll assume the latter supersedes the former (acceptance is acceptance after all) and just offer my advice. 1) You didn’t list how many credits you have-30 minimum for transfer. 2)if you are a transfer, the more credits the less they gauge your HS stats and scores. You have amazing EC’s, and that can/will help you overall if you meet the reqs for “transfer” status. With your credentials, you’re a high bump for almost every program UMich offers. As I stated, I don’t know the req’s or chances for Ross because I’m a transfer doing SS pre-health. Only thing that I can see that would hurt your chances are a poor Common App, and applying the wrong way (applying as a transfer when you don’t meet req’s). You’re an amazing prospect, but there are students with better stats that get denied and conversely, people with worse stats that get accepted. So if you don’t have 30 credits, apply as a freshmen (I know it sounds crazy, but it will definitely work in your favor). With your current stats and amazing supplemental essays, I am sure I will see you on campus come Fall. Hope this helped, and I wish you nothing but the best.
Little encouragement for ya. I’m a 34 year old Army war vet who just started school back up Jan '17 and I got in. I have good grades (4.0 and I transferred in with 47 credits-only 33 transferred ), but the essay is what separates the wheat from the chaff.
@dwane1 , please help me to evaluate my transfer application.

Awesome in my opinion. UMichigan has been my dream school. I did not apply in HS since based on previous results, literally almost 99% of the applicants from my HS are deferred in EA then rejected in RD.
Oh sorry I forgot my HS stats.
SAT: 1500/1600
SAT subject tests: 800 in math level 2 and 800 in physics
AP: Calc BC 5, Stat 5, Physics C: Mechanics 5, PHY C: E&M 5, Microecon 5, Macroecon 5, Chemistry 5, Human geography 4, Computer Science 4, English Language and composition 3.
GPA: 4.6/5.0
EC: most of them related to math and science, and one related to research intensive competition
received several awards in math(national level)
founder and vice president of school rubik’s cube club
Anyway, I guess with my significant amount of college coursework, the AO won t care so much about my HS stuff.
