I have been waitlisted for the 2018 class of UPenn. I was just wondering how many more people here at CC have also been waitlisted so that we can know our chances.
Does anyone have any clear information on the number of people who are usually wailisted and how many are accepted later on?

What is the waitlist data like?

@ivyleaguefan I have not got the exact statistics yet.

These Penn Common Data Sets for the four years of classes that entered from 2009 to 2012 will provide waiting list data for those years, on or around page 7 of each Set:

http://www.upenn.edu/ir/Common%20Data%20Set.html

For example, for the class that entered in 2012, 2,017 applicants were offered a place on the waiting list, 1,249 accepted a place, and 87 of those were ultimately accepted.

And for the class that entered in 2013, 2800 applicants were offered a place on the waiting list, and 60% of those accepted a place:

I couldn’t quickly find the number of waitlisted applicants who were accepted off of the waiting list for Fall 2013 but, as I recall, it wasn’t much higher than 50, if that high.

Waitlisted

waitlisted too! i can’t decide if that’s good or bad. also, do you guys recommend sending additional essays and letters of recommendations? will they help my chances of getting of the waitlist and being admitted?

@m3g4b4b3 First your username?I had to look it up twice before I typed it .Anyways when you are accepting the offer they have an optional slot for including people who have influenced you recently. I think that can help plus it is helpful to send some additional material.

Waitlisted for Wharton - what do you think the changes are that anyone accepted to Wharton will decline?

I got waitlisted too and will accept the spot. What’s the harm? The hope is bleak is but at least the acceptance rate is around 7%

@TimKanake did we get waitlisted at the same schools or what?!? :P

"This section is OPTIONAL

Please help us acknowledge any counselors, teachers or other educators who have positively influenced your growth as a student and person."

What is the purpose of this section? Will Penn notify the teachers that I have been placed on the waitlist? Will they request an update/response? I am wondering if anyone know before I submit the form.

For last year’s class (fall 2013) approximately 42 got off the wait list. Of these 35 accepted. Approximately 5 of those who accepted chose to take a gap year and enroll in Fall 2014. The initial 2013 wait list was 2800. It was reduced early on in Spring to about 100, although the exact number was not explicitly confirmed by Penn. There appears to be an Ivy League convention that wait list are closed on July 1. Some wait list decisions were made as late as June 29.

Ah waitlisted at this school too! Now to wait~ yes I was wondering about that. For the teachers/ counselors bit, do they contact them solely if they are interested in admitting you later on or how does that work out?

Do you happen to have a link for that? I know I’ve seen that data somewhere, but couldn’t quickly put my finger on it (was it the DP?). Thanks!

To 45 Percenter: It’s really not in one place. I followed the wait list situation last year with care, hence the details. Surprisingly very little of what was going on with the wait list in 2013 was captured accurately on CC. My recollection is that no CC users got off the list, or at least they didn’t make it known that they did.

I’ve been waitlisted as well.

Penn accepted 247 fewer students this year than last year, which may increase the amount taken from the waitlist–correct?

^ I sincerely hope so.

^ Not necessarily. Penn also accepted 105 more applicants during the ED round this year than last year, so there are fewer RD spaces available. It really depends on the RD yield, which last year was about 46%. And there were about 2,250 applicants accepted during the RD round this year. So if the RD yield remains about the same as last year, there will be some room for wait list acceptances given the target class size of 2,420. However, if the RD yield is significantly higher this year (something for which Penn and other top schools always hope), there will be fewer, if any, wait list acceptances. Frankly, I’d be surprised if there weren’t at least a few (20-30?) wait list acceptances this year.

But do you happen to remember where you got the final 42/35/5 numbers? I remember reading those numbers somewhere myself, but can’t seem to find it now. My recollection is that it was in the DP (where else would such details be reported?), but I can’t find it in the archives on the DP web site.

I’m not expecting my son to get off waitlist
