University of Pittsburgh Class of 2023 Discussion Thread

I second @proudpapaof2, we were also very grateful, but yet disappointed at getting “only” 10K in merit scholarship but only because others report larger scholarships. It is even more disappointing to hear that these decisions are final and maybe they might change only with better test scores. This implies that the test scores are important in determining the scholarship amount. Yet, my child has a perfect test score, hence there is no possibility for improving it, lots of APs all with scores of 5, an almost perfect GPA, lots of EC, volunteer and essays that took a lot of time and thought to write. I understand that there are a lot of competitive, very qualified students applying, and I get the entire holistic approach, but the “it” factor is very elusive, and leaves the student wondering what are they missing? Again, I do not want to sound ungrateful because 10K is still a significant amount of money, but as @proudpapaof2 said it because there are others with similar or lower stats reporting more scholarship money (15K in state and 25K OOS) it still feels somewhat disappointing, especially when you don’t know how could you improve your application.

Do you have to commit to participate in the group?

@mic212 & @proudpapaof2 I totally agree with you. It seems that Pitt was more generous last year, and they also had the Cost Analysis Process to give students a second chance. From 2022 thread, kids with ACT 35+ or SAT 1540+ and almost perfect 4.0 GPA UW got 10K more than this year. There were also more number of scholarship postings by mid Nov. After all, it is still Pitt’s decision. All we can do as applicants is to cast a wide net and compare our options at the end. The State of Florida seems to pick up more traction with the full-ride Benacquisto scholarship for NMF, even for OOS students (http://publicuniversityhonors.com/tag/benacquisto-scholars/). With UF and FSU rising significantly in US News ranking (35 and 70, respectively), they are not bad alternatives at all.

Pertaining to what @worriedcat is saying, if you are NMSF, please check out what University of Alabama is offering. Unless they changed their package, it was impressive, for NMSF and NMF.

To follow up more on @Winky1’s comment, there are so many other opportunities for full-tuition or even full-ride at other institutions if you are NMSF, pending NMF. Just to name a few: Baylor, UT Dallas, Fordham, Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, 7 Florida universities thanks to Benacquisto Scholarship. Oklahoma has dropped the package a little, but it is still decent.

Thank you @hailtopitt1787.

I got into UPitt today! I had looked at the mobile app yesterday and saw the Accept/Decline buttons, so I wasn’t sure if I was actually in. I got my “What You’ve Been Waiting For” email today with acceptance into the Swanson School of Engineering and the Engineering Guaranteed Admissions program (basically guaranteed admissions to UPitt’s grad school).

For those wondering about turnaround time, I sent in my application on October 31 with Priority Honors and filled out the SRAR. Still haven’t received Honors decision or financial aid (would expect maybe early December?) but I’m in!
I’m OOS and applied as MechE major.

@hailtopitt1787 if my son was deferred after applying to engineering and then changed his intended major to Pre-information science will he hear in a few weeks or after mid year grades. He was hoping changing to a less competitive major would move things along faster. Thanks !

I also got in today! I applied 10/28, buttons changed 11/12 and got the “what you’ve been waiting for” email today! I’m so excited!

Hi for those that got in - did the portal show any updates? I got the email with the cute video and the letter but no updates on the portal and its almost a week.

@Cherax, No - you just have to be admitted to Pitt!

Best,
A Pitt Admissions Staffer

@goteam2, If we are waiting for mid-year grades, we would have notified you. If you didn’t get any notification that we are expecting you to send mid-year grades, then he should hear back within a few weeks. Good luck to him!

Best,
A Pitt Admissions Staffer

What do you mean by “buttons changed” We just downloaded the app. How would we know if something changed?

If you go to the Admissions section, there is an accept/decline section. It used to say application pending/not pending (don’t remember) and then accept/decline buttons showed up.

Also, my portal didn’t show any updates.

Thanks. From previous posts, it seems that’s a good sign, but admissions reps have said to wait for email. I’m not good at all this waiting and I’m not even the one going to college!! (:

You can call admissions if you are curious but I can’t guarantee they’ll tell you until you get an email. But it doesn’t hurt to try.

I got in!! I applied 10/12 and got the email 11/16. I am so excited, hopefully its not a fortune to attend (im OOS) bc this is my favorite school. I applied to Swanson so we will see if i got into that school when I get my letter in the mail (hopefully today). I have a stupid question though, what is this whole talk about the app and buttons changing? What app is it?? I would like to get it.

Nvm I figured out the app and found the accept/decline admissions button

I’m an out of state student and I applied to pitt on Halloween and I completed my SRAR about a week and a half ago. Do you have any idea when I should expect a response back? The waiting is killing me! This is my first choice and I’m just so excited

My daughter’s button changed to accept/decline. Don’t know when, installed app just today (thanks to the forum, we were not aware of it before!). She really loved Pitt when we visited and, while this may not be her first choice, she will be very happy to study at Pitt! In case it helps someone, her stats are ~3.8 (not sure, since school does not calculate GPA), 35ACT, OOS. Application submitted 10/30.
