I am a senior at Andover high school, Massachusetts. I have been excepted into Ohio State, Michigan State, Loyola University at Chicago, and University of Pittsburgh. I am concerned about Ohio State and Michigan State’s pre-nursing program, as you have to apply after your freshman year. So, that leaves University of Pittsburgh and Loyola as my options so far. I’ve read many good things about UPitts nursing program, but wanted to hear from people who might have more knowledge.
Please PM me your questions. Will answer to the best of my knowledge. My daughter is a freshman at Pitt Nursing Program. She loves it
My D is a senior at Natick HS. She’s been accepted to PITT and Ohio State as well.
Not a big fan of Ohio States pre nursing and having to apply after 1st year to it. We’ve heard way to many stories of kids who did well at similar schools and had the grades only to then not get into their program. D toured PITT in the fall and loved it. The program is incredible from all we’ve heard. Hope that helps…a little anyways. Good luck and congrats! I’d love to hear anything from @vskr123 as well.
Still waiting on UCONN and Penn state decisions.
@oliviagaspar Congrats on your acceptance! Pitt has a great nursing program. One plus is that the clinicals start in your sophomore year and you will have about 1200-1300 clinical hours vs 800-900 hours by the time you graduate. The clinicals are also accesible on foot or by public transportation which is free with your student ID.
@Collegedad33, yes my D loves it a lot. She is a freshman on her second semester. The advantage of Nursing at Pitt is that they have many hospitals around the campus and can be assessed by bus itself. The kids do not need a car. My D did get into pre nursing at Ohio State but she did not want to have the stress of applying again. Instead she chose Pitt which is OOS for us.She is very happy there and does not regret her decision at all.
@vskr123
Thanks. Sounds like it’s everything we want academically…I’m hoping she picks PITT
But we are still waiting for a few more responses including Penn State. She didn’t love the urban setting at PITT but she was really impressed with the nursing program. How does your daughter like it socially?
When did your D apply?
@Collegedad33 - Yes, she is not big time into parties but does have friends with whom she hangs out with over in her free time and weekends. They do have lot of fun events happening in the campus and the kids have a great time. Finding friends is not an issue at all. Mine had friends in her program even before she moved on campus. So nothing to worry.
@vskr123 that sounds good. I’m hoping my D isn’t big into the parties either? I know she’ll like it once she starts and will make tons of friends in the nursing program right away. She got waitlisted at Penn State. That was surprising to say the least but she handn’t seen their campus yet. We are still hoping she chooses PITT. We should hear from Clemson next week. That may be a reach though.
@JoanieMitch D applied in early Oct. heard back in 3 weeks. Really quick. Then like most we have been waiting months for everyone else.
@vskr123 I meant I hope she’s not big into the parties either! Not with a question mark:)
Did you hear from Clemson today ? And are you OOS for Pitt?
@fall2018 D got waitlisted for Clemson yesterday. Not a big shock but still a bummer. PITT nursing is so much of a better choice anyways. In my opinion anyway. We are OOS. From Ma.
@Collegedad33 heck yeah. All those amazing hospitals right on campus and direct entry? Take it and run and don’t look back. Also, closer to you!
Pittsburgh is a great city, there will be much more to do there than in State College.
@Collegedad33
@carachel2
@mommdc
Wow I’m feeling even more confident that Pitt is it!!!
However,
My D absolutely loves UF!
She was beyond thrilled to be accepted!!
It was her #1 before realizing it’s not direct admit to nursing (& totally bummed after she applied & realized our mistake)
We will attend 3/26 ASD - Talk w/ nursing admission & make our decision - hopefully
Still waiting on 3 reg decision n 3 deferrals
This is a consuming, stressful, & tedious process
Any nurses attending 3/17 ASD?
@fall2018 I hear ya. It’s funny because I started a
Ohio State pre nursing vs direct entry conversation for this very reason. She’s in to their pre nursing and the thought of applying after year 1 is not appealing to me either. The feed back I’m getting is take the direct entry all day long. Freshman year away from home and in college is stressful enough with out the risk of not getting in year 2. My wife and D toured PITT in the fall and were blown away by the nursing facilities and program. Both couldn’t say enough good things about it. Hope this helps.
Anyone in the class of 2019 get in to nursing yet?
Yes. Approx. 3 weeks ago was accepted. 4.6 pitt gpa. 30 ACT 32 English 30 Math. Good Luck!!
yes, accepted into nursing with guaranteed grad school admission on 10/5
