University of Pittsburgh Request for mid-year grades

Was disappointed that my S received an envelope from University of Pittsburgh saying that they need his mid-term senior grades before they can make an admission decision. Did anyone else receive a letter asking for mid-term grades?

Yes… Received it today. What are your scores? I’m 1170 cr+m and 3.7 gpa which is exactly the average for my ha. My sat score is what is low so I thought that they would be requesting new sat scores. I think it’s more of a way for them to gain time to see what other students apply between now and January since I am a borderline student.

I also applied to business

So were you also surprised? Thought my S would be accepted without a doubt. ACT composite is 35 but superscore is 36. GPA is the problem because it’s just below 3.0 but attends a magnet high school. Also very involved in clubs etc. Applied to school of Engineering which may be more selective. Hope to get accepted after the semester ends.

I was surprised that they asked for grades. I have heard of people being asked to retake the sat and I strongly thought I was going to have to retake them. A majority of people who get asked for mid year grades have below a 3.4 and I have a 3.7 at a top high school so I am surprised that they asked. But I do have an upwards trend so maybe they want to see if that is continuing? It’s also just them stalling… Hoping my grades for this semesters classes are high enough. Looking like I’ll end with calc 2- A- or an A, english honors- B+ or A-, forensics A. I only have 4 classes because
My school does block scheduling. My fourth class is an art class so it doesn’t matter. Any thoughts on if this is high enough?

My S got the letter asking for mid-year grades but a week later he was accepted. It was about 10 days between the day the letter was dated and the day he got the personalized email acceptance video, so we figure they got his first quarter grades --not midyear grades–in between (they were As and B+s in mostly AP and honors courses) and decided to admit him. He got the acceptance letter a few days later. He had good SATs (1950), great rec letters and ECs. His GPA is his weak spot as he had a rocky start as a freshman but shaped up Junior year and is still on an upward trend. They probably wanted to know that he wasn’t slowing down Senior year.

wow, Deann, that is suprising with such a high ACT. my unofficial and limited observation is that many people who get asked for mid term grades and/or new test scores eventually get in, hopefully, your son will have good grades this semester. keep us posted. are you in state? does pitt know your kid is at a presumably highly selective magnet school. if not, it cannot hurt to emphasize that when your school sends in updated scores. and yes, engineering can be hard to get into.

He got his acceptance email yesterday. I’m not sure if he will end of going to Pittsburgh but I’m really glad it’s an option. He is also considering I.I.T and waiting to hear from the University of Illinois.

congrats on acceptance!!! i know a couple of parents of kids in the engineering dept and both kids really like pitt. Whoe wouldn’t?

Hi-Pitt requested my daughter’s mid-year grades a while ago as well. Midterm grades sent mid Nov; midyear report sent via snail mail from eastern Pa last Fri. In your experience, notice comes via an email to her (she doesn’t have to check site), and it took about how long after midyear grades were sent for your kids to receive answers? Thanks for any info.

It took a good 2 weeks for Pitt to decide after my son’s fall semester grades were sent. He was notified via e-mail and then by usmail. I hope you hear something soon.

Thanks! We do like Pitt but Illinois Institute of Technology is offering a large scholarship and we are waiting to hear from a few more schools. My son likes the University of Illinois but I think it’s too big of a school. We will hear from them tomorrow…may not even get in. Now we just have to wait.

Pitt also had asked my daughter for her first-semester grades. Well, she got a letter today that she was accepted to the Johnstown campus. I don’t think so. She’s already been accepted to four other schools, and she’s happy about all of them. She knows kids who are not taking as rigorous a schedule as she is (full IB) and don’t have better grades than she does, but they were accepted to the main campus last fall. Go figure. I think it’s Pitt’s loss. Yeah, I know that sounds like sour grapes, but she definitely has better options than Johnstown. She came home from school today and said all she wants to do is go south…
