^ I am not an expert on UR, although we did visit, but from what I have read here about UR, particularly from @guineagirl96 it seems that UR seems to value the ECs and essays more than UVA and W&M. There seems to be quite a number of kids who get turned down with good stats from UVA/W&M but still get in to UR. Again, this is my $.02 worth, but I think that UVA goes through the kids transcripts very carefully to evaluate rigorous courseloads and classroom academic performance, whereas Vandy seems to be very very focused on SAT/ACT scores. To me, UR seems to look for fit and creativity which is one reason they include the Spider essay. They also ask a parent to send in a recommendation. I am keeping my fingers crossed for your daughter with UR.
@londondad Thanks so much for your response, you seem to a lot about these schools and are always polite, you helped me on my other thread. What did you mean “they ask parents to send in a recommendation”? She has a letter from her teacher in charge of the AP Academy at her school & the guidance counselor which I think is required.
Hi @cloudymom - last year at this time we received an email from the UR President offering parents to write something about our son that was not evident from the rest of the application. They do this every year now but maybe just for the RD applicants if you have not received the email?
@londondad Oh I see, thank you. I have not received the email but they mentioned it last night on another thread. I promptly panicked, lol, but a nice poster PM’ed me the email & it clearly says they do it for RD which is what a few posters thought too. My D applied ED2 & we are supposed to hear those decisions 2/15, which is the due date for the letters requested of RD applicants. So, in short, I started breathing again! Whew!
I am a RD applicant but did not get an email about a parent writing an essay. Should I be worried?
Do applicants get the email or their parents?
The email goes to the parents.
@rockyc Did you get it yet? If not try googling it, or I hope someone responds to you here.
@cloudysmom I have not gotten it. Neither have my parents. Could someone screen shot what the email looks like.

@rockyc I didn’t get it but my D applied ED. I have no idea, please someone answer him!
Last year we received the email regarding parent input. At the time my D was a Richmond scholar semi-finalist. I did write a letter and I believe it did help. She ended up a Richmond scholar. Good luck to everyone.
How long ago were the emails sent? I have 1,000s of spam emails to wade through!! Thanks
Jacketsgirl2222 - you have a great resume and should have every chance of getting eating in to UR. I am getting seriously depressed by the nbr of students with stats this good who are getting deferred or denied from colleges. What more do these colleges want or expect? My D has a similar profile to you - tho lower ACT - I was actually relieved that she got a deferral to UVA when I saw people posting denials with higher test scores. She was not invited into our state flagship honors college (UMass) and found out only those with Ivy-like stats were getting invited. i had no idea that the competition in the top 4% of students was this brutal! You have all worked so hard and it’s gut-wrenching when it doesn’t seem to pay off. Having said that you will ALL have amazing futures no matter where you end up! It’s all a big game now but this will pass !!
@britlass. I, too, have been very depressed seeing the stats of kids getting denied and deferred at these more popular schools, such as UVA and UNC. My D was denied at W& M ED1. We are OOS so thought UR as a private school might be a better shot, not much on the threads about their ED1 stats though. I have hope but not a ton. Coincidentally, I graduated UMASS Amherst in 1987, seems it’s a much better school today!
Has anyone received email to parents this year ? I have not, but would love the opportunity to advocate for my D!
@britlass. Yes, many on the other thread got emails on friday, but only RD. Apparently they don’t if your child is ED, like mine.
We got the email on January 26th. It was from President Ronald Crutcher,
Subject line was “Tell us about your Richmond applicant”
To the parents/guardians of:__________
I am pleased that ________ has applied for admission to the class of 2021 at the University of Richmond. As you know, the admission process is a collaborative endeavor that engages a wide range of individuals-from the applicant to guidance counselors, teachers, coaches, mentors, and many others. Including, perhaps most notably, you.
To this end, I invite you to compose a letter sharing any information you feel is relevant regarding your student’s particular strengths and suitability for admission to the University.
As a father, there are things that I wish I had been able to share about my daughter when she was applying to colleges several years ago. There may be personal struggles or obstacles overcome that students are hesitant to reveal, or noteworthy achievements or unique character traits that reflect the values of our University community.
At Richmond, our Office of Admission works very hard to learn as much as possible about each applicant. We begin by looking closely at what your student reveals to us through the application, essays, and co-curricular activities. We also carefully review and evaluate transcripts, test scores, information from school counselors, and recommendations. All of this information will help us gain a fuller understanding of each student, but your letter can tell us things we can’t otherwise know.
Every parent or guardian of a regular decision applicant has the opportunity to send a letter. Please include your student’s full name and University ID number (URID: __). You are encouraged to send your letter by email (preferably in the body of the message, not as an attachment) by Wednesday, February 15. The letter will be included with the application and reviewed by members of our admission staff. This is an optional letter and if you choose not to send one to us, I assure you that 's application will not be viewed any less seriously.
I also encourage you to contact the admission staff if they can be of assistance to you in this process. I wish you the very best during this exciting time for your family.
Sincerely,
Ronald A. Crutcher
President
Thank you for sending email! @cloudysmom my dad graduated from UMASS Amherst in 87 also!
We did not receive that email - my D applied RD. Do all RD students get this email? Maybe no email means they are not interested, hope not! Should I call them?
