Thank you for that background!
We selected the Honors session as one the tracks as well.
Did you attend the HC reception on Friday night? Was that valuable? I wasn’t sure if doing the HC reception and the session would be redundant.
I did both for my S19 and remember appreciating going to both. You get to meet and socialize with professors from various departments, which was great. The next day the head of the honors college spoke and there were students there. I believe there was a Q&A session. They both seemed worth it then, but I’m not sure if anything has changed since then.
Thanks so much for the info!
Really enjoyed the FRIDAY night honors session! Would definitely recommend this.
Same here. Your daughter’s profile is almost identical to mine. No mention of scholarship or tuition reduction in the letter but we’ll see if they come through with anything in March. My D was also accepted at Kelley school of bus with $36k scholarship, automatic admit to their honors college, and invitation to apply for additional selective scholarship. So I guess it just depends on what the school is looking for when they do or don’t offer $$.
Hi, Dumbass! Sorry, couldn’t resist ;). I think Kelley is the current front-runner for my daughter at this point. Still waiting on a few more top choices, but Kelley checks a lot of boxes, especially the cost. With the scholarships a great value. It’s not that I won’t consider paying more, it’s more about getting more for what I’m paying. She also really loved Syracuse, and we had a super impressive visit to their business school. We are planning to attend an admitted student day at UofSC at the end of March, and a Kelley direct admit day at the beginning of March. I guess we’ll see how much she loves them both in person. Hopefully by then there will be a scholarship to consider as part of the decision process.
@NJmom3G, according to the Admitted Students Guide, it looks like merit aid decisions come out in mid-March. I’m guessing you may have seen the scholarship page where you can plug and chug (GPA/test score) to see what merit is likely. If you use the NPC, it also guesstimates the merit you may get as well.
Thank you, I had not seen this. I don’t see the NPC where I can input the gpa/test score, I just see a list of types of scholarships available, with average stats from the previous year. I am not confident that my daughter will get one, as most people were offered scholarships in their admission letter, and she was not.
We planned the admitted student day for March because we will know the scholarship info by then. If she doesn’t get one, I’m cancelling the trip. I am not paying full price for UofSC when I personally know people with lower stats than hers who are getting significant tuition reduction. It just doesn’t sit right with me.
The link that was posted above will direct you to the website and under tuition scholarship you can quickly use the calculator and see what it says… it list more than double the least amount of merit that the letter promised we receive with admission, so maybe you’ll see some savings too. Not sure how accurate it is though… time will tell.
Here is the SC NPC link. The GPA and Test Score question is the last set of questions. The NPC lines up well with the scholarships listed on the page. I hear you on the cost and the equity of the process. Good luck.
That was super helpful! Thank you! I had heard the merit $$ for U of SC comes out in March, hopefully this calculator is on track…
@NJmom3G and @dumbass1 Kelley and Darla have pretty completely different vibes so it’s definitely worth visiting both because it should become obvious then.
Same boat here (but also add Fisher at Ohio State) and leaning toward South Carolina. Bottom line… you can’t go wrong with either!
For us the comparison/contenders are Smith (UMD) and Moore. Although DD is leaning quite heavily in favor of Moore and the SCHC. Fortunately, the $$ are pretty close to being equal, if SC comes through in March.
SCHC is amazing, congrats! I’m pretty sure you’ll be blown away in March. We just got back from the January visit. SC knows how to roll out the red carpet!
Hi NJmom - glad you got my humor! Agree totally with you re Kelley and we will likely attend Direct Admit day there as well. All these schools are very good but as you say it’s also about getting value for your money.
@doglover2001 - Would love to hear your impressions on the different vibes for Darla v Kelley? Any top line thoughts/ good or bad?
It’s tough to say topline to describe the vibe but I’ll try anyway… But first off… both are excellent!
Darla has a little more friendly of a vibe. Great major options and their crown jewel is International Business (#1 consistently). Supply Chain also very highly rated. In their presentation they said it was #5 in the country (from Gartner). True confession: we have a junior at Darla and have been super impressed. She also considered Kelley. She has a killer internship lined up as do most of her friends. The admitted students day presentation was informative but still felt light hearted. Tons of school spirit and students appear to be genuinely happy and couldn’t be nicer.
Kelley is super highly regarded and I believe the largest undergraduate business program in the country. So name recognition is huge and will always look good on a resume. While all that is impressive, it can give off a “cog in the machine” type of feeling. When we toured the Kelley building, several students were in suits and it felt like a mini corporate America. IU also has a lot of school spirit and students seem to love it overall!
Did you go on the meeting re OOS students & financial aid/scholarships? A copy of the meeting is posted online, definitely worth the 15-20 min watch (the question session became redundant). Chances are your student will get merit money, but will not find out till mid-March.
@NJmomOOSkids - where is that posted?
We got there through Portal>Admitted Student Events>scroll down to the link to Virtual Events. There may be an easier/faster way but that’s where/how we found the recording.
