Congratulations to the USC spring admits. I know you may need some time to get used to this turn of events, but I hope you all consider how fortunate you are in this crazy year of college admissions to be accepted into the Trojan family. While most schools use a waitlist which leaves every student up in the air for weeks or months with no guarnatees--at least USC's spring admits are ADMITTED (yay) and you get to make the decision if you want to attend.

I've grown very fond of so many of you. My heart aches for those who are getting thin envelopes, and I'm cheering for the spring admits, hoping you do choose to come to USC.

Rainmama, testing games for Nintendo would sound pretty appealing to my S. LOL. And the SCA is possibly more selective that the ivies. It's a good problem to have.

My son will be going to film school at The University of Texas. <<

curious, My S applied to UT film school, too. He was accepted to UT as a summer admit (home schooled, so no top 10%, and I'm sure you know how competitive admissions were there this year, too. Congrats to your S!) All summer admits are general studies, so S didn't get into film. When S and H went for a tour there, they were told that it isn't hard to transfer in to the film school. Nevertheless, since S is accepted to film school at Chapman, he'll be going there. I kinda wanted him to go to UT because we live in Houston and it's a lot closer to home. :-(

There is a thread that looks like anyone with "acted upon" and a date of 3/28/08 is being denied. We have "reviewed last status update 3/28/08.
Not sure if it means anything just curious.

Welcome to ellebud's D! Any other new spring admits today?

Now that I have USC on my speed dial, I learn a bit every day about the Spring admit situation. Here's my update:

Both counselors I talked to said there's next to no chance of being brought in for Fall start. One counselor said it's very unlikely unless you're in a major that requires you to start taking major-required classes in the fall of your first year - like architecture, emphasizing that this is a 5-year program that makes a more pressing case for starting on the regular fall schedule. By extension, I assume this could apply to pharmacy and other specialized programs. But not to film. Nope.

Spring admits are not allowed to sign up for any of the Explore USC sessions, but are encouraged to go to the admitted students event on the 27th. When I said this was a bit late to the May 1 decision deadline, and that we would really like to visit earlier, I was told that we could still come on campus and look around, and could contact our major department.

Spring admits get perks like football tickets if they want.

Counselor made it sound like it's really easy to catch up with one's class through AP or community college classes. What you do is talk to an academic advisor in the summer to help you figure out what community college classes to take.

I'm still waiting on a definite answer on whether the National Merit scholarship is guaranteed for a spring admit. This question doesn't seem to come up very often.

I was told to call Housing with any questions pertaining to the timeline for housing decisions.

my daughter is definitely going in spring. she'll probably take a few classes in the fall or summer and then we might go on a vacation for few weeks. my older daughter started in the spring as well. is it perfect..no...but she'll rush in the fall and it will be fine, she's going to be a trojan...like her sister and her mother..and my son, by choice. my husband..no..he's a penn grad.

"I was told that we could still come on campus and look around, and could contact our major department."

Awe I was worried about that as well (coming on the 27th, so late to May 1st). So we should just visit campus on our own any regular day before that and just take a regular boring campus tour that everybody takes? Interesting.

last year spring admits could not apply (online) until July 1st (if mailed before it still registered as being received as july 1st) housing assignments were made starting in november and continued to be made and changed right up until school started (parents be very proactive in calling housing during this time period, it really does help) Also don't stress to much about housing selection on the application as the chances are very slim it will actually be made.

As for credits AP courses and community college will not put one far behind if at all for general majors (with some exception of architecture and others that offer courses only in fall). In fact the only reason why fall admits have more credits than i do is due to the fact that they transfered more AP credits than i did. I also know some who did no community college and are just fine.

The only issue ive run into is one of my friends earned over 30 credits before starting here. this caused him to be considered a sophomore and therefore ineligible for the guaranteed housing for next year.

I really enjoyed the explore USC day last year and in fact it was the day i chose USC (i had gotten into my top 3 schools) so if you get the chance i highly recommend it.

i'm an international student living overseas, and I'm planning on going to a community college before Spring.
I have absolutely NO idea what the community colleges are like. Anyone enlighten me please?

notaznguy,
The campus tour is not ordinary. You will have the opportunity to speak with students and ask them questions. I think you will be impressed by the diversity of the student body and the new buildings everywhere. It has been repeated here, but when students visit SC there is a special feeling which is difficult to explain.
If you note the comments from the parents on these threads you will read how happy their "children" are at the university. Also, all undergraduate classes are taught by professors. Discussion groups and some labs are taught by TAs.
If you call ahead you may be able to make an appointment with a staff person in your field of study who can meet with you.

My son is a Fall admit for USC and a spring admit at another school (Cal). Cal basically has an on campus program that allows the kids to (mostly) live in dorms and take extension classes on campus. If my son wanted to go to Cal, which was previously his dream school before he figured out that USC is a better academic fit for him, we would not let the spring admit bother us in the least. And if my son was a spring admit for USC, where there is no on campus program, I would seriously consider a gap semester and send him overseas or let him travel for a semester and just hang out and take a big break before diving into college. If you would have been paying tuition anyways, then $20,000 can go a long way towards allowing a kid to go out and get educated in a slightly different way. Maybe all of the USC spring admits can form a club and meet over in Europe or Thailand or something and spend the semester together "learning" about various things. They could arrange to volunteer or intern together or create some fabulous opportunity for themselves to have a unique start to their college years. As a matter of fact, perhaps schools with spring admits should put together study abroad programs tailored for their spring admits and allow them to earn credits overseas. They could send spring admits in a group so they bond with fellow students and come back feeling like a part of the family. I would imagine they would come home with new perspectives and open minds and could contribute more to the university as a result. Good luck to all of you spring admits. Don't let a a short delay deter you from attending USC if you think it is a perfect fit.

That would be great if some spring admits came up with some type of travel
experience together. I think some other schools (a friend's daughter went to Hamilton and was a spring admit who did this) do offer some types of study abroad programs with a small amount of credit. She went to Ireland if I remember correctly. I'm not sure in my son's case if the CC option would be worth it, since he is already maxed out on the number of AP credits you can carry to USC. He'd be in for Thailand.

cyb: If someone structures this it would be a great idea....You may want to contact Rustic Pathways....they could actually be of some help in organizing a group to do this....they have Gap year/semester choices on their website...rusticpathways.com...I have a feeling there may be a privacy issue with releasing those peoples contact info that are being offered spring admit, but I'm sure USC would let them know that this is being organized as an option.....

regarding community colleges; there is an extensive network of community colleges in los angeles that include santa monica cc, west los angeles, los angeles cc, and in the san fernando valley, valley college and pierce cc. santa monica is very popular, west l a less so. and los angeles cc has an excellent acting conservatory, but is in a funky area. they are online to give more information. my older daughter took a course at santa monica and said her professor was really good. classes fill up early so contact them asap.

Rodney,
Has your daughter decided where she's going yet? I read your post about her and marveled at how much it sounded like my son. He's somewhat checked out of this process and seems like he's in denial sometimes. He never knew (or asked about) any of the days that acceptance letters or e-mails would be coming and then let them sit here unopened. We're going to look at USC on the 27th (late, I know), and he's still going to visit UW, W&M and UVa over the next few weeks. I think the spring admit sounded most appealing to him.

I'm reviving this thread just to say that I finally got it in writing: the National Merit Presidential Scholarship is guaranteed for spring admits. Yay!

So who's going to the reception on the 27th? The information session they're holding for spring admits sounds very interesting. Unfortunately, there's no way I can make it :/

To cyb: You have a lot of traveling up ahead in a short time before decision May 1. Have you checked the web sites of these schools? Do you have some merit aid, financial aid or special program which makes it worth your time to go to all of these schools?

my daughter is a spring admit, i think doing the semester abroad in the fall is a great idea and would love to discuss with other parents. we would need some units i think to be sure she graduates 2012. anyone interested?
