Hello,
I’m interested in attending the University of St. Andrews School of Economics & Finance. Ideally, I would do MA Financial Economics or MA Economics. I looked at the requirements and was confused on a few pieces. They mention AP and different SAT exams. My GPA is 3.7 and my ACT is 32. I haven’t taken any AP courses. My school doesn’t offer too many and the ones they do offer are in the field of science. Most of my courses were in business. They didn’t offer any AP Econ. I’m not trying to do IR or Art History, so I’m not trying to be a competitive major. I was wondering if I’m automatically dinged for not taking any AP tests. I’m an american student if that helps. My world won’t end if I don’t attend St. Andrews, but I would like to know how I stand.
If that GPA is UW, then I believe you stand a very good chance of being accepted. St. Andrews is one of the few schools in the UK that do look at GPA. Your ACT is also very good. There has only been one kid who has applied from my high school and he got in with a 3.7 GPA weighted (so maybe a 3.3-3.5 UW) and a 2000 SAT. I also think I am going to apply. Although their acceptance rate for UK students is low at around 10%, their international acceptance is much higher (mostly for the extra $$$).I was just wondering, is their business/economics program really good? Its hard to find info on top business programs in the UK.
You have a great ACT score and a pretty good gpa - just dont forget to mention in the application that your school doesn’t offer any AP classes in the subjects you are interested in and I think you stand a good chance of getting in! (=
My daughter attends St Andrews and it an excellent school. Admissions usually depends heavily on the equivalent of British “upper or A levels”, which in the US is AP and IB. If you did not have access to them, you need to take SAT subject tests which are readily available. Your ACT exceeds their requirements as does your GPA. I would contact the admissions office. With your ACT and GPA they will be very interested in accepting you, but they can tell you what other tests you need to take for your program. Also-there is a 36 page thread on St Andrews.
@wcrcmom would it be hard finding a job in the states if I was to attend St. Andrews for econ or finance?
You might also consider applying to the William & Mary/St. Andrews joint program. You do two years at each and receive a joint degree from both. Sounds like a very cool program to me.
Ditto on the St. Andrews program. The University of St. Andrews is well respected in the UK/Europe while WIlliam & Mary is very well respected in the United States. Both are premier institutions to attend
