University of the Pacific

If any of your students are taking community college courses UOP likes to see a transcript. My son's application was held up 2 yrs go because they said the application was not complete without the CC transcript. The problem was that the CC class was in the fall of senior yr and did not end till mid Jan and used an outside company for the transcripts. It would have been Feb before an official transcript became available. We were able to work it out and they eventually did process the app without it but it took a few phone calls. They were the only school out of 7 that asked for the CC transcript. The CC course he was taking was for enrichment and fun not a required course for high school or college admissions which is what also took us by surprise.

I don't have official numbers but based on my son's friends most of the students seem to come from the west. Colorado on out. Also a large group from Hawaii. Asian the most represented minority. Many students on financial aid from the San Joaquin Valley so they appear to do outreach to the neighboring communities.

DD got all her materials in on 10/10. We haven't heard back yet but are hoping to hear back before we go up for a visit on 11/15. I'll report back. She did take CC classes and we sent that transcript in already because I had the same issue with her older brother.
I would imagine (fingers crossed) that she will be admitted. We are hoping for some merit money.
I had the impression that if you did the early app you would get an answer pretty quick...DS did an early app but didn't hear back until right before Christmas.

ebeeee, my dd is considering Pacific as well. We were both impressed by the lovely campus, the cozy feel and the attention they seem to give their students. Pacific attracts many kids from the Bay Area (SF) as I remember from when I grew up. It's a comparitively short drive to drop your kid there (as opposed to San Luis Obispo or UCSB). I was impressed with the number of accelerated programs that they have. Their dental program is very well-known as well. Additionally, I liked the fact that they don't allow the kids to rush for Greeek life until 2nd semester...that way your kid has a chance to get their feet on the ground during 1st semester.

We just returned from Pacific's Preview Day yesterday so I'm updating this thread.
The day did not change our opinion at all and UOP is still our DDs first choice.
We did get to meet with professors from her major so that was a very useful component that the campus tour did not provide. They gave a lot of imformation about curriculum, etc. that you could read about in part on the website but the information at the preview day was more detailed.

I was surprised at how many of their prospective students are from the Stockton/Sacramento area.

There seemed to be a decent number of students on campus for a Saturday so I did not get the impression that it is a big commuter school.

The enrollment person for her major told us that they had a record number of applicants and that we won't hear back until mid January. This despite the fact that she did a distinctive scholars application and submitted everything by 10/10. Clearly they are going to sift through all the EA applicants from 11/15 and prior before making decisions.

It seemed to me that there were a lot more girls than boys around but that could be because the boys were still asleep.

The new University Center which houses the bookstore and dining hall was very impressive. It was being built when we were there last April.

The largest groups there were for pharmacy and the dental programs.

ebeeeee, did you get any information about their music program? They have a jazz program that might be on the radar for S2.

We did not get any specifics on the music program. I did hear that it is highly regarded and of course, they made a BIG pitch for how small and personal their classes are. Class size ranges from 35 as freshman to 5 or 6 in senior year. The deans and professors are personally acquainted with the students. In light of the economy and the record numbers expected to apply to CSUs and UCs they are obviously wanting to ensure that people feel UOP has something more to offer than the CSU/UC route.
The pep band played in the beginning of the day and they had a lot of spirit but honestly (no offense to anyone), they were not one of the best bands I have ever heard.
Sorry I don't know more specifically about music.
I would definitely have your son get online and email the department.
My daughter has received several personal emails, a handwritten note, a phone call, etc.
They are very personally responsive to prospective students.

Thanks for the update, ebeeee. S1 didn't have time to go to the Preview Day but it sounds like it was worthwhile. I think Pacific has slipped down a notch on his list, but I'd like him to spend one more day there before he crosses it off completely.

I don't understand the point of the distinctive application if they don't notify until January? The website says "Quick Admission Decision". Wouldn't that mean, well, quick? And wouldn't 3 months be, well, not so quick? I'm sort of kidding, but sort of wondering what's going on ;)

you may also want to look at Willamette for music.
A friend of D's really liked Davidson for instrumental ( but apparently didn't get much money)- is now at Willamette.

I agree three months is not so quick.

( wonder if their accounting dept, thinks three months is * quick*

LOL, and thanks Emeraldkitty: H and I are Willamette grads, and S2 wouldn't be caught DEAD there! They don't have a jazz program, so it's out for him anyway. They do have a nice little music program though. We refer a lot of kids there every year--it is a lovely small liberal arts college.

agree with vballmom. I wasn't happy to hear that they are now saying mid January. To me that is the standard EA notification date, not a quick turnaround.
We were hoping to avoid RD applications if we had a positive response from UOP.
Sigh

Yeah! Happiness in our household. DD was accepted and with Regents scholarship. No more applications for us.
Best of luck to others.

CONGRATULATIONS to your daughter!!!!!!!!

Yaaaaayyyyy ebeee's daughter!

Congratulations to you and your D. Time to enjoy the rest of her senior year.

Outstanding news - congratulations!!!!

Congratulations! And how nice to be done with applications!

Wow, that was a very fast admission decision. I sent mine in a few days before November 15th, and I still haven't received anything.

Did you submit the EA application, stockbroker50?

My son submitted EA on Oct 29, and heard back last week (he got in with a Regent's scholarship).

He won't be attending because he also got into his ED school, but he liked Pacific a lot.

Yes, I did submit the EA appl under the Distinctive Candidate app. Now it looks like I lost my chance to be accepted into their special programs ):

UOP sent me a letter in the mail yesterday saying that they never received my official high school transcipt, which should not be true because my counselor told me she did before November 15th.

Oddly enough, I checked my application status online after finding out my university ID number from that letter, and they received my application materials and recs on December 17th, more than a month after I submitted everything online. And now I have to wait until after winter break before I can ask my counselor about the transcript problem.
