They have not done this in the past at least to my knowledge. My daughter was accepted EA last year (we are IS), she did not get a phone call. She went elsewhere, but not because of this. However, I can say that UVa did come off as a little cold in the admissions process compared to other similar schools. I think this is great that they are going to show their admitted students a little more love.
“@northwesty interesting observation. But I do not think it is always the case that for many of the OOS legacies, UVA is the highest ranked school they will get into (assuming that they would not be good enough EXCEPT for legacy). I thought I read somewhere that many of the OOS legacies actually are very competitive, even if they didn’t have legacy.”
I don’t think you are right about that, if you are talking about the OOS kids that ENROLL at UVA vs. the OOS kids that are accepted to UVA.
Remember that 76% of all OOS offers are declined. So it is very likely the case that for the legacy kids that actually ENROLL (rather than those who get accepted), UVA will be the swankiest school they get into. The same probably goes for a lot of the non-legacy OOS admits as well.
That would be one reason why the SAT stats for the IS and OOS ENROLLEES vary a bit less than you would think. The highest stat OOS kids (unless they get a Jefferson scholarship) are likely to wind up in the 76% that eventually enroll in a school further up the ladder.
That’s exactly what happened with my kids. I had one OOS legacy kid who was 50/50 for getting into UVA (which meant the kid was competitive for UVA at the IS applicant level). Had she gotten in (which she didn’t), UVA would have been the best school she got into and she definitely would have enrolled. I had a second OOS legacy kid that had very high stats. With the legacy treatment, UVA was bordering on a safety school for her. Got into UVA but also got into some higher ranked schools too. Didn’t enroll at UVA.
@maevechrist15 yup, my school nominated me! Unfortunately I think only the schools that can nominate (there’s about 1800 nominees initially so like 1800 schools) are able to get a student eligible. So it’s definitely not that you didn’t have the stats for it or anything. It’s purely on your school; for whatever reason they did not nominate a student in your grade. Nothing reflecting on you personally.
I’m the salutatorian of my grade, so initially they offered it to the valedictorian, who snootily declined because she felt that UVA was “below her level” (which is hilarious) so I gladly accepted the nomination!
I moved on to the regional interview level for the Jefferson scholarship but honestly I’m so worried about even getting into UVA! I’m OOS (New York) and I hear that for a non legacy or non in state it’s really competitive. I feel like I’m just another collection of numbers. Hopefully they see past that. Same for any other competitive school.
@northwesty personally I’m not so sure legacy candidates are truly evaluated “as if they are in-state” these days. I say that based off a comparison of my OOS legacy daughter last year against the sons and daughters of friends that are a mix of in-state, out of state, legacy and non-legacy.
I think there may still be some advantage. However, with the ever increasing number of applicants, especially OOS, even OOS legacies need credentials strong enough to land an acceptance at other quality schools.
That is wonderful, @rebecca12345. Of course you are not another collection of numbers - your moving up in consideration with the Jefferson Foundation attests to that. You have something that is working to paint yourself as substantive and curious, intelligent and interested in things outside of yourself.
Congratulations to you!
Just about a week until we get a definitive answer folks! Stress levels are through the roof, but let’s hang in there!
When do you all think we will hear???
@Waiting2exhale thank you so much! I hope I manage to show something of value to them when I interview (if I don’t hyperventilate, that is).
I love your username, by the way! I feel the same way.
Friday 1/27 … my best guess
I think it’s going to be Friday for 2 reasons.
Reason 1) The admissions board usually needs a full week to finish looking through all the applications. That is why they wouldn’t have posted it last Friday because they had Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, off. However, they have a full week this week. Reason 2) They don’t want angry/upset parents calling them after the results are posted. Therefore, they post the results on a Friday, when the office closes for the weekend, so that no one can call.
It’s very smart and I know it’s going to be agony to wait 4 more days! But we can do it!!
My guess is Friday 1/27 at the absolute latest. I just don’t see how it can be released mid-week when the only other time it has happened (please correct me if I’m wrong) is when there was a big snowstorm on a Friday.
Guys. We have no idea when it’s coming. Just try to relax and not worry about it. It’s out of your hands now.
Calm down. It could be any time this week.
You think we have days off?
Honestly, people are going to yell at us no matter when we release. I actually had someone call a couple weeks ago to question a decision made during last year’s cycle. I think by this point, we’ve released on every weekday but Monday.
I sort of cringe at the Ivy comparisons. We are no where near single-digit admit rates. We’ve posted the VA and OOS offer rate breakdown on our website for years: http://avillage.web.virginia.edu/iaas/instreports/studat/hist/admission/first_by_residency.htm
And remember, the GPA attempts to summarize the transcript, but we use the actual courses and grades on the transcript when we are assessing your academic preparation. GPA just doesn’t tell the complete story.
Hang in there, all.
@“Dean J” thanks for the update and reality check. How about a small hint as to when we might expect it? e.g. sometime this week… Thanks again for all you are doing - you ROCK!
Thank you for the reassuring words Dean J!
Who else has Dean J’s notifications on Twitter turned on? lol
Thanks for the update Dean J! Besides waiting for the decision release, I also have a Multivar final exam… what an exciting week!
Officially done with midyears, so I can devote my time to stressing about UVa decisions
