@rebecca12345 just curious, who nominated you for the jefferson scholarship? I’m not really sure how it works. Could I have potentially been a good candidate for it but just because my guidance didn’t “nominate” me for it (most likely because they didnt know about it), did that make me ineligible?
@northwesty interesting observation. But I do not think it is always the case that for many of the OOS legacies, UVA is the highest ranked school they will get into (assuming that they would not be good enough EXCEPT for legacy). I thought I read somewhere that many of the OOS legacies actually are very competitive, even if they didn’t have legacy. I think having a parent (or two) go to UVA - and if that child wanted to go to UVA - they would be trying really hard through high school to make sure they were competitve enough to get in.
Wow, I applied to UVA thinking I had a good shot. 32 ACT OOS with no hooks but good GPA and good EC’s and was really proud of my essays… it’s only right that Virginia kids can get in easier, but ivy league stats for OOS? Crazy. Pretty disappointed knowing I’ll most likely get rejected or deferred this week. C’est la vie!
@maevechrist15 do not think that way! Who knows…except admission! Remember, UVA takes a holistic approach and no one has the magic formula. I believe that essays and recommendations really come into play at UVA. Keep us posted! And, good luck
You can find the stats for in state vs OOS here. Not as much difference as you would think.
Just select the year and school -

@ea21 that is very interesting! Thanks for posting. I didn’t think there was much of a difference hence my posting earlier. I think UVA is a very competitive school (selective) for all that apply, even if they are mandated to take 2/3 from in state.
Looking at the stats, the amount of OOS applicants that UVA receives has more than doubled in the past 10 years. This upward trend leads me to believe that UVA received a ton of OOS apps this year and that’s why the acceptance rate is going to be lower (my guess is 20% for OOS) and also why it’s taking a bit longer to release decisions.
I didn’t realize it’s so competitive when my d EA UVA, I am really nervous for her now though she has good grade, good SAT, but we are OOS…
Hoping it’s today or sometime early this week
My guess is Wednesday, but fingers crossed for earlier!
The acceptance rate of OOS is expected lower this year, which brings my more anxiety these days. My s has 2300 SAT (old), 1530 (new), good grade (4.3 weighed), but we are OOS… finger crossed… GLTA!
my d has 1570 SAT, 4.69 weighted GPA, got accepted to state U (NJ), waiting for HC invitation (another anxiety)
@seefree good luck! Unfortunately, it is much more than about GPAs and test scores. Of course, that helps, but I think the essays and recommendations and ECs really tells more about each of the students As Dean J has said, GPA is so different from school to school and what that school has to offer and how they calculate GPA. Your child looks strong in that area though…
@hcmom65 totally agree with you. Test and GPAs are just a portion of the others. Essays, recommendations & ECs are really important as well, if not more…
I kind of agree…I do think there is a threshold however, especially as it relates to standardized test scores. That is the most objective measurement and I think it can hurt an applicant that is unhooked if that number is not at a certain level. I think once you make that cut, then it comes down to the less objective information. Just my take on the process. They have to draw the line somewhere to make the process manageable. I think a bad score can hurt you, and a good score still might not be enough. But you never know. There are always some exceptions and an exceptionally strong application in other areas might off set a less than stellar SAT score.
Did everyone see what UVA just retweeted? They have people signing up to make the calls to congratulate admitted students. It’s happening v soon
My guess is the end of this week but who really knows at this point
I just saw that retweet too
Pls today
really? they call? to every admitted student?
