They are sent in the mail and probably won’t come for a few days @hhjjlala
the group me is crazy
@r22166 What do you mean by crazy?
BTW: preliminary financial aid notifications are up
In order to figure out how much it would cost each year to attend, is it $30,572 (as a Virginian, tuition + other costs) and then you subtract the “offered” value? I really hope that isn’t the case, as the NPC showed it would cost about $7,000 less than what it is currently showing.
Also what does it mean be preliminary? Does that mean there’s a chance it could get better, or?
@berkdork The NPC figures usually include a $4500 loan for Virginians. When you figure your cost after you subtract any grant or scholarship, are you also figuring in the loan? Also, I think preliminary means they have to verify everything before mailing a final package, and people might send them updates. If none of the figures they have change, I doubt there’s much reason to think it will get better or worse.
Deferred :(thats ok there is still hope!!!
for anyone who got acepted, what do you all think was your strength/hook? any legacies out there?
notalegacy
confused4lifehelp, I am a first generation college student, a junior national level competitive swimmer, a good writer with high ACT scores, and full time Virtual Virginia pilot program student, so I think that is what helped me.
Does anyone know when Rodman/Echols notifications will be sent out for those who were admitted early?
They were sent out in the mail today, so they will probably arrive sometime by the end of this week depending where you live @realityhitshard
my financial aid award is TERRIBLE. I’m gonna appeal but I’m not optimistic. Come on UVA, how tf am I supposed to afford you???
@deeeznuts aha same…I’m worried because this is the only school I’ve heard back from so far and if they’re all this bad then oh boy…
where can you find the financial aid award
my daughter’s financial aid award is also terrible. anyone heard of any success stories with financial aid appeals at UVA?
I suppose it’s best to first get competing offers from other schools, not necessarily as a negotiating tool (I don’t think they engage in negotiations that way) but to see what’s possible and how much it would take to make UVA’s offer competitive.
Where do you see financial aid decisions? I don’t see anything on SIS.
@confused4lifehelp It is very hard to determine why some kids get in and others don’t, as UVA has holistic admissions which are becoming increasingly competitive. However, IMHO from what I read here at CC, I think this is what UVA focuses on in descending order:
-
Grades and School Coursework - I think that UVA Admissions really drills down and ensures that successful applicants are taking rigorous courses, that they are rocking those courses and that the kids measure up as one the top kids in their school. It helps if the high school academic interests are related to college academic/intellectual interests (which will be borne out in essays):
-
Essays/Personality/Fit - I think that despite being a public Uni the essays are extremely important. If you have a look at the essay prompts, they are looking for original and intellectual thinkers that can then tie those interests to what they want to accomplish academically while at UVA. The essays are also looking for kids who will get involved and add something to the fabric of UVA and
-
I think this comes much after 1 and 2 - Test Scores - I would imagine that the combination of the debacle of the new SAT introduction combined with the high number of applicants UVA gets with 95%+ percentile scores may have led UVA to slightly emphasize scores relative to the above categories. Having said that though for many kids a too low score may get them eliminated before they even get to Committee.
@CollegeParent123 After you log in to SIS, it’s in the Finances section. View Financial Aid.
In the years after a major tweak in testing (1995/1996, 2005/2006, 2016/2017), I would argue that admission officers actually lean on them less. Though the College Board put concordance charts together, the fact is that we don’t have any historical data about the new iteration.
Holistic review means you look at all factors in making a decision. Don’t forget about the recommendations!
