kt: There actually are many waitlists. There is one for in-state engineering, one for OOS engineering spots, one for in-state College, etc. In the past, the total waitlist was rather large, but it can shrink quickly as many students accept places at other universities.
If you look at past common datasets you can see how many were placed on the waitlist and how many were accepted from waitlist. It varies greatly by year. A few years ago they took almost no one - last year or the year before, it was several hundred.

HELP! Coworker’s DD accepted OOS at UVA yesterday. Great news! I am asking on her behalf if there might be a second letter coming offering merit money / scholarship (as opposed to loan money). As of now, OOS price out of their reach.
If a little confused. If my first interest was listed at Computer Science and I’m accepted to the College of Engineering, does that mean I am accepted to CS at COE or does it mean that I am accepted to COE and need to apply for CS at a later time during my second year?
In the past, UVa has not offered merit aid to incoming first years, but they do offer substantial need-based aid for US students. There is a plan to start providing some merit aid, but I haven’t seen any announcement that it will start this year.
Yes, for most universities the number of persons offered admission from the wait list can vary from year to year. That is because admissions offices try to adjust their initial admissions offers each year so they do not have an excess number of first year students. Some years they may overcompensate.
The percentage of students who accept an offer of admission each year can vary. For example, there are some reports that there has been a decrease in interest among some international students in attending US universities this year because of some of the political attitudes in the US federal government. Canadian universities have seen an increase in applications from international students.
@College5812 - UVA does not give merit per my understanding. We are in the same boat.
@voltthorn I was at the engineering open house last Saturday so I can answer that. UVA does not direct admit into Computer Science. All CS major will apply for it second year. But they have recently changed things so that they no longer have a cap on CS majors. The profs said on Saturday that if you are a decent student you will get in to CS. The only reason you wouldn’t is if you have done so poorly prior to that point that they don’t expect you to be able to succeed.
@mom23travelers Do they have any minimum criteria for admission to CS in the second year? Because the only way I’d attend UVA is if I know I’ll definitely be able to do their CS program.
Checking in to answer questions and there have been a ton of comments since I was last here. I’m going to arbitrarily start a few pages back and work my way forward. If you need to get a hold of me, please comment on my blog.
Remember that you’re undeclared for two years in the College and one year in the School of Engineering. This is covered in the application instructions. @voltthorn, as long as you are in good academic standing, you’ll get your chosen major.
If you can’t log in to SIS, read the “after you submit” part of the application instructions.
If you were offered a spot on the waiting list, click the link in your letter and read the FAQs. They cover how that process works and goes over numbers of offers from past years.
We did not send any such emails last night.
I think I covered this a few times on the blog, but you’ll be getting an email this afternoon with a personalized link in it to RSVP for DOTL. You can’t RSVP without your personalized link.
I have to address this since a lot of people post something along this line. You got in because your entire application was compelling, not just because of your essay. Every section of the application is important to us. Sometimes an essay makes me root for a student, but I can’t just admit someone just because I like their essay.
Almost all of our scholarship money is dedicated to need-based financial aid. Students needed to file the FAFSA and CSS Profile by March 1 to have access to those funds. There are some other scholarships, but they are specific ([see this list, for example](Scholarships - UVA Alumni Association)). We don’t practice tuition discounting like some of our peers.
My understand from the CS open house talk I went to on Sat. is that there is no cap. They said there is no hard and fast criteria for getting in to CS. They are committed to take anyone who is qualified. They said that last year almost everyone who applied got in it was just a matter of a few applicants who had totally tanked their calculus grades.
But please don’t take my word for it. This is an excellent question to email the CS department about or ask about on Days on the Lawn.
Are the scholars (Echols, Rodman etc.) program notifications sent out in conjunction with admissions notices?
@14wjs14 I remember reading somewhere that they come out a few days after decisions are posted.
April 1 I believe
REJECTED! So painful. My sister is there already and I thought I would be joining her, but NOOO
@exoheat11 I really understand how you feel! At least you are wait listed, I’m just rejected, that is it. My dream school and now no. OUCH. Yes I worked very hard, stayed up late many nights and so on. But no. In state, decent stats, etc etc. It does feel like a slap in the face.
@lauren887 oh man, yeah I can’t even imagine how you must be feeling. I sincerely hope you find a school that you will thrive in and enjoy. I’m greateful to be waitlisted, but after getting deferred, it just feels like they don’t WANT to make a decision.
*grateful
@exoheat11 do you kind of think that getting wait-listed is just a polite attempt to postpone rejection?
