@LaikaDoodles I don’t think so… I mean, UVA has been known to outright reject a lot of qualified students, so I don’t think waitlisting would be postponing rejection.
I’m not even sure what their process is for waitlisting. I really thought since I got deferred in the first round to engineering, I’d have a shot regular. Instead, I got waitlisted. I’m in-state too, so I’m really confused how they decided to waitlist me.
@exoheat11 keep trying. You have great stats and not everyone will be going there. People from my school have appealed and gotten in. But you chose a hard major. Can you appeal to a different one?
STILL crying this morning. I need to get a grip. But still so sad. I do not even want to talk with my sister, who is sad but what can she do? And of course the blogs are so CHEERFUL. But good luck to all you did get in and those wait listed.
I realize that many highly qualified applicants are very disappointed. This statement from the UVa Alumni Association helps to explain how it has become much difficult to gain admittance in the last few years:
“In 2000, U.Va. received 14,472 applications for an entering class of 2,927, and by 2016, the number of applications increased to 32,426 for an entering class of about 3,675. With over double the total number of applications and only a 30% increase in class size, admission has become more selective over time.”
In response to an earlier comment, I have not heard of an “appeals” process for UVa admission. If you could show that something was completely inaccurate, you might try - such as if your high school made a major mistake in reporting your GPA.
@“Dean J”
Thanks a lot for the information. Excited for the packet. Also, I’m international student but live in the U.S. My result letter on the portal has the address back in my country though I put my U.S. address for mailing address. Will the packet come to where I live now or my my home country? Thanks again!
Rejected! Shazam! Oh well! My first thought is to thank the U. of Va. Admissions officers for considering me qualified enough to take a second look after I was deferred EA. My second thought is, how the heck did you guys mess up by not accepting me? Lol! Really though, congrats to all who get in.
And they are giving weight to First Gen and minority status; most qualified students at our HS who don’t qualify in these categories in NOVA were waitlisted.
College admissions are so unpredictable. Daughter’s applications, all RD, VA in-state; Richmond (accepted), VT (accepted), JMU Honors (accepted; top 1%), University of Southern California (accepted;18% acceptance rate!!), W & M (waitlisted??), UVA (rejected??), Davidson (waitlisted), Colorado College (waitlisted), Wake Forest (rejected), Haverford (rejected).
Understand most, Colorado College is mainly ED, accept maybe 6% RD, Davidson and Haverford RD is about 17% RD. Kind of get Wake Forest, unusual admissions that doesn’t require standardized testing. UVA and W & M really strange. In state about 45% acceptance rate. UVA broke records for applications; 37,000, I think. Got to admit, daughter only visited those two once each and wasn’t feeling it at either school. Richmond topped her in state list. Her lack of passion for those two may have shown up in her essays.
For the UVA-obsessed, apply EA next year. I think it does make a difference, regardless of what the school says. My daughter’s actually glad she didn’t eat an admission or waitlist spot for those that really want UVA or W & M. She wasn’t going to attend anyway after getting into Richmond.
She does have a decision to make after her USC acceptance, she didn’t expect that one to come through.
@midatlantic2012, Curious…how do you know that UVA gave weight to and accepted first generation and minority applicants from NOVA while waitlisting MOST other qualified students from NOVA who “…don’t qualify in this category?” Do you have inside information?
