University of Washington

Having taken my visit at UW almost a month ago, I've had some time to think about the university. UW was originally one of my top two choices (along with University of Oregon). Now, I'm trying to decide whether I even want to apply to the school. The campus is gorgeous and Seattle is a great city, but not a lot about the school really stood out to me. The school has over 40,000 students and is mainly comprised of in state students. I've was very put off by the fact the it's a commuter school. I wouldn't imagine that this would affect the social scene in a positive manner if all of the Seattle kids are leaving on the weekends. The dorms at UW were probably the worst I've seen on a college campus. From what a few students on campus told me, a lot of the lower division courses are taught by foreign TA's. One guy told me that he had a humanities class that had 1,200 students! What makes University of Washington any different from Arizona State or Ohio State?

Now that I think about it, is my main reason for being interested in UW based on the fact that the university is located in Seattle? Does UW's solid academic reputation come from the fact that it has some great graduate programs?

I believe it partially does. I have heard that UW's medical school is one of the best in terms of research, so that of course attracts some attention.

noob is correct. They're 2nd or 3rd for biology/medicine.

I was soooooooo close to going there. Soooo close.

What made you so interested in the school?

The UW is focused on research and graduate students. Typically it is among the small group of universities that lead in the amount of federal $$ received for research.

It's no secret that the dorms are as appealing as the Tower of London. Not dirty or run down but certainly glum.

They are a lot of big universities that have a research focus but still provide a decent undergraduate education. UW seems very disinterested in its undergraduate population.

I know almost no one who finished in four years - access to needed courses can be very difficult.

Best global public health school and best primary care med school in the country.

May I add that it has the area surrounding UW has a huge hobo problem especially at University District.

Mickjag, understand Mini's point; the UW is a HUGE place. Thousands and thousands of undergraduates. For years it was the largest study body on the west coast. Funding issues for the last 20 years have only exacerabated the thin dispinsation of academic resources to undergraduates. Only self-motivated students and gifted athletes need apply.

If you're a computer science person, it has a fantastic CS department.
