So I’m an out of state student who got into UW and am really tempted on going. However, it’s going to be very expensive and I wanted to know if they give out a good amount of money to their OOS students.
Most, I mean vast majority, of OOS public do not give out good amount of aids, if any, to OOS students. At UW, you may apply for merit scholarships but the chance is low too. Have you checked their NPC?
So…you got into UW. Did you apply for financial aid? Did you receive your financial aid award?
If you have been accepted, you will know YOUR answer very soon…assuming you applied for aid.
In terms of merit…those awards usually come with or very shortly after acceptances are received. Did you receive anything?
It actually took a while for UW to get their FA package. My D was accepted EA but it requires additional documents. It turned out we declined the admission offer around this time 4 years ago before even seeing the package.
EA accepted students probably receive their packages about the same time as RD kids…because EA kids have until end of April to decide whether to attend…just like RD kids.
But now…the RD kids should be getting packages soon enough.
All this student can do is…wait.
And I’m guessing @billcsho that your didn’t wait any longer…because you had a satisfactory offer elsewhere!
Yeah. We decided to let go and not wait for the FA package in March as we know it cannot match what the other schools had offered. By that time, we have already received the FA packages from 3 or 4 other schools with scholarships offered. So it is a bit later than other schools.
What kind of aid would you expect from an OOS public like UW that doesn’t meet need?
Other than merit maybe for high stats?
College Navigator says that 35% of students receive institutional scholarships and grants aid, average amount around $6,000. That includes instate students.
@smexysinxd Did you apply EA or RD? We are OOS and my S was accepted EA. UW updated the financial aid package on the portal a a couple of weeks after the acceptance, and it was only loans ($5,500). Nothing else. If you were just accepted RD and are waiting to see if they offer merit aid, I’m sorry to say – don’t expect it to be much, if anything at all. UW is not known for giving “a good amount of money to their OOS.” It’s the state’s flagship school, and its priority is in-state students. (After all, funding is from state residents.)
Did you apply for the Chancellors/Powers-Knapp scholarship? Some students have already received word that they were awarded a scholarship, which would be full tuition or tuition remission (allowing OOS to pay resident rate).
As an OOS, UW will be very expensive. If you happen to be a Minnesota resident, though, you do get a very good tuition rate.
No, their taxpayers don’t want to pay to educate other residents’ kids. Understandable. You probably don’t want to pay more taxes so that your state’s schools can give your money to OOS students.
