For employers, what school would be preferred? I understand the importance of building up my profile, and already do by doing open source projects, and I am also planning to duel major with physics. I'm planning on getting at least a masters degree. My biggest interest are in AI, quantum computing research, and if none of those work out a fall back to any area of computer science generally is enjoyable (as long as I get to use linux haha).

I’d say UNL - their grad program looks stronger, and if the grad program is decent, you can likely cajole a prof or two to sign you up for some undergrad free grunt work (i.e. coding etc) as part of his or her research… That’s how you build up your skills and expertise. Being the flagship for the state also helps.

Linux is fun, but look into its multimedia components (video, audio, etc). That’s where the demand is. We use a Linux platform for multimedia device development and it’s a good area of expertise to be in; another is way down at the hardware / driver level… PM for details.

The experience at these two schools would be very different - you’re comparing a state flagship, Big Ten school to more of a big-city commuter campus. Without knowing you I can’t recommend one or the other.

I expect Nebraska is probably the stronger CS department overall.
