Unofficial UNC Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Hi, I’m also a transfer applicant for UNC. I’m pretty unique in the sense that I have just immigrated to America from Pakistan and all my education have been outside America. I have 3.24 GPA in college (3 semester completed). SAT 2050 (1460/1600). SAT Subject Test Math II 790, Physics 790 and Chemistry 770 HS GPA is NA (we do the British System there with an ABBBB in 5 A levels (Math,F.Math,Chem,Physics and Thinking Skills). TOEFL 106. I have a couple of extracurricular but all of the major ones have been in high school. My CA essay was good imo but i don’t think it was polished. My UNC supplement essay was written in rush. I have done nothing to show demonstrated interest in my essay, would that hurt my chances? I’m basically looking to get an affordable education somewhere (EFC is low and I don’t qualify for instate tuition anywhere) and getting into UNC would be awesome!

Hi! I’m a current freshman at a Tennessee state school looking to transfer to UNC as an advertising (commerce) major.
High School
GPA: A 3.61 unweighted. About a 4.2 weighted. I took one AP class and straight honors.
ACT: 31 (Eng 36, Math 26, Read 33, Sci 26)
ECS: Step Team, manager. Make-A-Wish Club, senior member. Pan-African Club, assistant stage manager. One Acts (theater production), main character in two plays.
College
Only got one rec, its from my engish professor and i think it’ll be pretty good.
GPA: 4.0 first semester, will get the same this semester as well.
ECS: NAACP, executive board member. Honors Student Council, freshman rep. I work/volunteer as a bookstore clerk every week and tutor students in English. I’m also in Students Advocating Service.
I wrote my gen essay about not being challenged at my current school and how that’d hurt me later on, used a anectdote at the beginning, balanced between creative and objective. I chose the intuitive solution one and wrote a humorous essay about getting overcoming a cultural stigma to achieve my goal. I was so relieved to finally turn the application in. Hope we all get in!

Any of y’all apply to other schools?

Effie - I also applied to nc state (I think my username gives that away)…will find out in about six weeks…did you apply anywhere also? your stats look good :smiley:

I’m so excited that this page exist and that I won’t have to wait through the next two months alone. I just got updated that all my “to-do” are completed so my full application is ready for review.

Currently at: UNCW
GPA: 3.3
Year: Sophomore
Major: Economics/BA (Planning on Law School)
HS GPA UW: 3.85
SAT: 2080
Extra Curricular: Collegiate DECA, Active Minds (Mental Health Awareness), Pre-Law Society, National Association for Business Economics, National Panhellenic Association, Student Government
Community Service: Autism Speaks, MDA, Make-A-Wish, St. Jude’s, The Pittsburgh Project (tutoring learning support children), Special Olympics, and served as VP of Community Service for my HS.
Recommendations: Dean of Students from UNCW, and the Mayor of Pittsburgh (my hometown)

In high school I applied to UNC, was deferred, then waitlisted, and then finally denied. I couldn’t say I was surprised as I am OOS. For those of you who are familiar with DECA, I was a state executive officer of PA (so I planned the State Conference) and a two-time finalist at ICDC. I completed all optional essays, personal statement, and mailed an additional “letter of explanation” concerning my GPA- I lost my father during fall semester which clearly had a negative effect on my academic performance. Along with that, I included a portfolio of my best academic work and a copy of my winning project from ICDC. UNC is the only school that I applied to transfer so I will be anxiously awaiting for April!

Good luck everybody, can’t wait to see what the future has in store!

@EffieWhite UNC is the only school I applied to, I’m so nervous for when they finally release their decisions!!!

Hey @arstof13 I live in Wilmington! Or I do when I’m not in school haha :slight_smile:

Hey guys,

I got in last year from a NJ Community College with 58 credits @ 3.75 GPA.

I received a GPA of 2.5 in high school, and then got my life on track.

Good luck :slight_smile: and btw I’m a bio major on a premed track.

P.S. Yes, it’s amazing (as long as you’re not a physics major as the department is a little shakey)

Has anyone else’s materials not been processed yet? I’ve sent all my materials, so I was just wondering…

@eespos1
Same here. I sent all of mine over a week ago. I would imagine they are just backed up.

What materials is everyone sending? I sent in high school and all college transcripts, SATs, but i’m worried i’m missing something.

@eespos1 @TranslationLost

I sent my materials early January, and I had the same issue until I called admissions last week. Only took about an hour after calling before everything was processed :).

@TryitoTransfer those are the materials I’ve sent! @cowtongue looks like I’ll just give them a call then, thanks for the heads up!

What did they say to you @cowtongue ? I sent in all my supplementaries about a month ago and on connectCarolina online it says that they still haven’t received them. I called them and they said that they would process and look for the materials after they finished reviewing and handling the first year undergraduates applications and paperwork. Maybe I should call them again since you got your materials sorted out.

@cowtongue @eespos1 @TranslationLost

Most of my materials updated this morning. It’s still not complete but it’s closer. I would just give it a few more days before freaking out. Like I said in my previous post, they are probably just backed up.

@NjTransfer2016

Hmm. I was told that they have my materials and it was just a matter of processing them.

Based on the previous year’s thread, it looks like they’ll send an email regarding missing materials closer to the hard deadline. So, you’re not in trouble yet.

UNC superscores the SAT right? I was looking at my scores, which they’ve downloaded and they don’t seem to be showing my highest reading score (with percentile ranking), is this something to be concerned with?

Ok, yeah, none of my materials have been processed yet even though they’ve all been sent (and have appeared as processed on other school portals). I sent an email but I assume everything’s ok… right? haha

I don’t usually ask to be “chanced” but I really have NO clue what to expect from admissions and i’m trying to figure out how seriously to take the possibility of having to move a few thousand miles! I’m hoping someone who is more familiar with Chapel Hill’s admissions procedures could give me some insight. Thanks in advance! I’m also prospective a junior bio major if that matters and I’m currently attending an out of state community college.
