What does UT do if your school doesn't rank? I have a crappy GPA(3.7W/~3.0UW, maybe higher after the 1st semester), and average(maybe subpar) SAT scores at 740M/670CR/660W, on APs I have a 3 on Chem and a 5 on Calc AB. I'm an OOS applicant; do I stand a chance at UT(I'm applying to the engineering school for compsci)?

any EC??
at least your test scores are good. Do you know you estimated rank? just kinda maybe guess.. =]

Don't really have an estimated rank, but if I was forced to say, I'd guess around top 25%. Also, my SAT2s are chem 640, math iic 710.

Hm, ECs:
- Around 900+ hours of community service at a teen center(but we go out to various benefits and help out etc.). President of the teen committee that runs the teen center. This is where I've spent an enormous amount of time.

Working with faculty at an ivy league university on a compsci project; trying to get a paper published, but I don't know if it will happen until mid-Feb(or later).

Did FIRST robotics 9th grade, couldn't get enough money to continue($60k per year is a fair amount of cash for a school club). Now in 12th grade we're teaching LEGO robotics to middle schoolers for one day each week(around 2-3 hours a week, in other words).

President of Computer Club for 12th grade, involved since 9th.

Orchestra for 4 years(I'm not really good, but I enjoy doing it).

That's pretty much it. I think my ECs are very focused, but I don't know if UTexas would look at them and think that I should have been more involved shrug.

Computer Science is not in the engineering school, it is in the College of Natural Sciences.

UT will compute a rank for you based on your school profile and grades. Don't estimate a rank, as this will just hurt you.

Your ECs look pretty good, so if you write good essays, you should be good.

theloneranger: Yeah (sorry for the double post), I applied to the science school as my first choice. Do I have any shot at the honors programs(I applied anyway for the hell of it)?

Turing--Well you have some strong computer related ECs and a good SAT math score, but it's pretty exclusive.

Dean's is even more exclusive, so I'd have to say I doubt it.

But there's no pain in applying, the worst that happens is that you don't get in.

theloneranger: Just to clarify, if I apply to the honors programs and don't get in, then can I still be accepted to the non-honors UTexas austin? Can I rejoin the honors program if I do well during freshman/sophomore year?

Also, where did you find the data on OOS applicants' SAT score? Got a link?

Yes, you still can and likely will be admitted. Most applicants to Honors are rejected from Honors--it's actually a big deal. UT pretty much invented the concept of collegiate honors programs and the programs are the best in the country. Don't worry if you aren't accepted--UT is still a great school.

You're going to need to be more specific. Some honors programs like Plan II (and Dean's and Turing I believe) won't accept any transfers. Some like BHP have specific slots reserved for internal transfers, but I don't know about external.

The OOS data was from an earlier thread on CC who got their data from Admissions, I believe.
