Hi, I'm an international. When applying for need-based financial aid, do colleges require official bank statement during the application process, or after been admitted??

I have not known of anyone asked to produce a bank statement. I suppose they could if they felt it was important in determing need. However, as an international student, it's possible there are additional and/or different paperwork requirements. Sorry that's not much help. To get a definitive answer you should email the financial aid offices at the schools you're applying to and ask.

For international students, each school will have a specific list of things it requires. Considering the fact that the overwhelming majority of colleges in the U.S. are not need blind to international students it is not unsual that for many international students, schools do request certified bank statements when assessing need.

the most common things are:

Copies of the latest tax returns filed by your family with your country's government. The 2008 tax returns should later be submitted when filed. If your family does not file a tax return with your government, statements from employers certifying 2008 earnings are required. (Employer statements may not be substituted for the tax return if tax returns are filed.) All tax returns and statements from employers must be in English or a translated copy must be attached.

If your family lives and works in the U.S., in addition to completing the international application, please follow the instructions for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents with the exception of filing the FAFSA.

If your parents are divorced or separated, each parent much complete the financial aid application on your behalf.

many schools also request that you fill out the College Board's International Student Financial Aid Application

Some colleges do. There are many different ways international students are treated by the different financial aid offices of colleges. You have to work with these offices at the colleges where you are applying.

As Sybbie noted...this is not unusual for international applicants. The colleges need to verify that you have the resources to attend their school. When my son did his study abroad, WE had to provide bank statements so that the receiving country would know that he had a means of support.
