URGENT: TAP Certification Dilemma

Hello everyone,

I currently attend a community college in Orange County.
I’ll just briefly point out some relevant things in reference to this question:

-Political Science major (+ alt major for UCLA: Global Studies)
-Honors Program at School/TAP
-3.7 TAP GPA
-All required classes/units taken, except a dilemma which is noted below

My dream school is either UCLA or UCB (yes, I know they don’t accept TAP!

HOWEVER,
here’s what happened. I have been taking a Math 30 class for the first 8 weeks of the Spring semester, and will be taking Stats160 for the last 8 weeks of the semester (starting April) to fulfill my major requirements.

I have a counselors’s appointment tomorrow, and was lucky enough to get one this week at all (they fill in literally minutes), in it that tomorrow is the last day to get TAP certified by an Honors counselor, as I am in the honors/TAP program. However, I am afraid that they won’t certify me (even though I have everything completed) because I can’t add the Stats160 to my schedule UNTIL the first day of class, which is April 3rd. I exchanged some emails with the head of the Math department at the college who is the one teaching the class, and she informed me that I should be perfectly fine, as long as I email her for the add code on the first day of class. I do have proof of all these emails, but I don’t know if that would impede my ability to get TAP certified because it’s not showing as “in progress” in print on my transcript as I am technically on the waitlist. I will be taking the class, and she said I should have no problem enrolling the first day. All I have to do is wait until then.

How does this work? Does anyone have any insight/opinion on an issue of this sort?

Please, please help.

It is much appreciated.

You will have the only authoritative word on this tomorrow it seems. Good luck!

You will need to work this out with your CC, since they are doing your TAP certification.

@zoeyschmoey‌
Obviously, I’m not your advisor but I do not think you will have a problem since certification is merely saying the courses will be completed by end of spring term, nothing more.

Please let us know what they say. :-?

Umm both those schools accept TAP… are you sure your school doesn’t have programs for them? I didn’t even think the other schools did TAP since they have TAG. @lindyk8 do you see something strange about this or am I missing something?

I did see that @music1990‌. It was a little confusing, but I think maybe he meant he was just doing the honors version (UCLA) and UCB doesn’t offer that. That was just the way I interpreted it.

BTW, how much reading are you doing in that English dept over there?

@music1990‌ Yes, I understand both do…consider that a miscommunication on my behalf…I understand there are schools in the Bay area that have that sort of contract with Berkeley…I’m in Orange County- my college does not.

@lindyk8 No, it works completely different. The counselors at the school will send all the TAP applicants in a seperate envelope (literally) so that they can look at those individuals first…it’s priority consideration. UCLA wanted to see that the courses were not waitlisted, but on my web schedule bill. Today was the final deadline, and I was unable to enroll in the class, despite everything I did in my power to get in touch with the professor for the add code. The professor is actually the Dean of the Math department and is on vacation. Another thing is that she is going to give me the add code, and I will still have applied to UCLA, UCB, and all the other UCs…I just won’t get the priority consideration I worked so hard for (will have accumulated 20 honors units at the end) which is important considering my intended major (PoliSci) is highly popular and the fact that my GPA is very ‘average’ and not exactly high. But again, this was due to the fact that I would take 20 units sometimes, manage a club all on my own, worked at times, and was taking honors units at the same time, whilst being involved in the honors program at my school…but just not getting CERTIFIED for it…which again…is pointless…considering that I meet all the requirements, and will end up taking the Stats class- I just won’t receive my add code until April.

Regardless, I believe everything happens for a reason. And my counselor (who runs the entire counseling center/honors/student transfer situation informed me that I still have a decent chance for every other UC…including UC Berkeley, because they don’t have a TAP contract with my school.
She also said that if I get denied for UCLA, I can appeal and that the entire honors department would validate my claim of the fact that I actually did do all the required work not just to transfer, but also to be reviewed as an honors student. It’s just so frustrating to know that I won’t be considered and looked over as an applicant in the way that I wanted to be looked at, because now I feel like all those all nighters, anxiety attacks, and lack of a true social life (amongst a million other adversities students nowadays face) were completely pointless and futile…at least that’s what I originally told myself…but NOW at least I know that I worked extremely hard on a personal level and it showed me how much I relied on a piece of paper to validate my hard work. It was truly all I really cared about above so many things. And despite not getting that validation I worked for on an institutionalized level, it doesn’t mean I didn’t live these past few semesters, it doesn’t mean I didn’t accomplish, and it surely doesn’t mean I that I didn’t apply- something many people aren’t blessed enough to even have the opportunity to do, as even paying for the application fees is what holds some people from applying. I’ve seen it and it happens way too many times.

I’m just going to let things happen ‘naturally.’ Who knows? Maybe UC Berkeley might even accept me.

Anything can happen.

***edit to my first comment, what I meant was that I am going to take the class in April-May as per my indicated schedule, but because I could not physically prove that I was enrolled in the class, then it’s almost like the UCLA thinks I am not going to take it at all…because waitlist basically means ‘iffy that you will even get in at all.’ Again, she said no matter what the circumstances are, she would not let me enroll in the class until the first day (which is in April), and the deadline for TAP was today.

Why not send them an email that summarizes what you’ve posted here?

Or, even better, have your ““my counselor (who runs the entire counseling center/honors/student transfer situation”” send the email stating your are TAP certified?

Its good to know that you’ve got the grounds of an appeal.

@luckie13 I appreciate your input, it means a lot!

No, it’s a very tricky situation.
I am not TAP certified because I cannot enroll in the Stats class until it start in April…I can’t get the add code for the class until April, so I can’t get TAP certified because it doesn’t show that that class is currently in progress for Spring of 2015 BEFORE they have to send TAP apps. The deadline for TAP was earlier today, so because it wasn’t on my web schedule bill today, and won’t be for another month, I can’t be certified, because by the time I do they would’ve gone through all the priority applications…

@zoeyschmoey‌ Ah, I see, you are not in it yet, only wait listed. Although the form does seem to note March 6 as the deadline.

That’s a tough break. Perhaps it could still get sent in. The link says to note exceptions in the comments. It’s worth a shot. I would still try and get it submitted.

Also, how did you get wait listed? Being as this is your last term, and you’re an honors student, you should have had priority registration. My daughter was honors and she registered right after veterans and foster care students. It seems like your advisors maybe dropped the ball a bit.

Also, is that the Stats course required for admission? Is it required for the major? Is it listed IP on TAU or PL?

My advice is if the deadline really is March 6, try and get into that class. If the advisor didn’t get you in to the correct time frame to register, try and use that as leverage.

Ok, sorry for last post. I can’t sleep.

If this is the required math course (as well as possibly a major req) I’m not sure you want to send anything in that says you’re waitlisted and you won’t know outcome until April.

From the TAU, as far as they know, everything is running smoothly and you’re in the course.

@lindyk8‌ This is amazing!!! I will definitely, definitely look into getting in touch with UCLA myself!!! I am so excited and am ever thankful for your continued help. It means more than you’ll ever know!

@lindyk8‌ And I registered late for the class because I was working on another class. Simply put, I finished math 10 recently. and I will be finishing lower division math 10 and math 30 (intermediate algebra) in the first 8 weeks. and then wanted to take stats for the next 8 weeks. However, I hadn’t finished math 10 (elementary algebra) because I was doing self-paced math (which means it was online and I could finish whenever I wanted to- a program my school has) and took 20 + units some semesters…so I had to leave it last minute. Simply put, you can even finish like 3 lower division courses in that program in one semester.
I couldn’t register for Stats because ‘legally’ I was two pre-reqs behind the class. I could only register if I was one class behind it. I finished Math 10 just recently, and am now working on finishing Math 30 in one month (5 more chapters to go) that need to be finished by April and am doing it pass no pass anyways. But regardless, I could’ve only registered for Stats if I was in Math 30 which wasn’t until more recently into the semester. It’s a quite frustrating dilemma but I think contacting them and getting the class by the deadline would be awesome…so thank you for that and I will definitely look into that.

I sincerely applaud you if you understand why I couldn’t register as early as I wanted/intended to…

Also, the status course is required for admission to my major. It is listed as IP on my TAU.

Good luck!
