Hey, I'm visiting Cornell tomorrow, and it just occurred to me that I do not know if there are interviews. Are there? Do I need to dress up in clothing more formal than what I would wear to school (nice t-shirt/polo + plaid shorts)? What are some things I should consider asking the admissions counsellor to get a better understanding of the school? Can I wonder around campus after the information session and tour?

If you did not sign up for an interview then there will not be a interview. Yes you need to wear something formal. Doesn’t have to be black and white. Just have some nice long pants and a button up. The questions are up to you. You should ask about things that you don’t understand not about things someone else tells you to ask about. And yes you can wander around the campus after the tour.

First, I would find out if there are interviews. If you didn’t schedule one in advance, then there may not be one. I found this link by searching “Cornell interview” Cornell University Undergraduate Admissions Office. Doesn’t seem to be any unless you’re under specific circumstances. However, if you do have an interview, I would dress way nicer than you would at school. A button down shirt (tucked in), khakis, and nice shoes will do. But do not wear plaid shorts, or any shorts for that matter. Depending on the setting and who your interviewer is, you may need to dress up even more than that, like wearing a jacket and tie. Ask questions that you genuinely want to know, stuff that you can’t find by simply googling or searching the school website. For example, if you’re interested in student life, ask questions like “what are some things you consider a ‘must do’ for students here?” etc. And yes, you can always wander around alone before or after the tour, or any other time you’re on campus.

A jacket and a tie seem like overkill to me. Especially in the heat. But, OP, if you didn’t schedule an interview ahead of time, you likely won’t have one. I don’t even think they offer them. Google it and you should find the answer. (Some students get alumni interviews after they have applied…but only if alumni are available in their area). And those are offered, not requested.

So what should I wear if I am NOT going to be participating in an interview?

@yikesyikesyikes Casual comfortable wear(be ready to walk). Colleges don’t care what you show up to the tour wearing.

@existential12- Thanks! Button down shirt w/ jeans is good?

or shirts + short?

@yikesyikesyikes Since you’re just doing the visit shorts and a T-shirt is totally fine.

As has been mentioned before, if you didn’t sign up for an interview, there won’t be one. Interviews are required if you apply for architecture (if you’re going for art, interviews are strongly recommended), the School of Hotel Administration, and ILR. So if you are applying to one of those, you must schedule an interview for sometime before applications are reviewed. Otherwise, interviews are not offered.
