It is not exploitation. Would you prefer that we hide it so that you could feel beter about your chances. GetMeOutofHere please feel free to take your negative comments out of here.

Well, I think he has a valid point. We should strive to get into top schools of our own accord, regardless of race.

Good luck to you guys!

it sounds like you wish you could.

I'm URM (I didn't check the box though)

By the way, I didn't mean to offend anyone. Sorry if I did.

"(I didn't check the box though)"

You know, I noticed a lot of URMs say this...but I highly doubt that they don't check it....

I have no reason to lie to you guys as I wouldn't gain anything from it. If not checking the box leads to my rejection, then so be it (I would be hella dissapointed though).

I'm not trying to point you out, just an observation.

glucose and apfreak are funny guys. :p

i wanna meet you. you are both obsessed about the URM thing. :p

just submit the app and you'll be happy in december.

TO all of you who think URMs shouldn;t check the box I doubt that legacies don't use all of their influence to get in. Being African-American has affected my life and I am not going to ignore that just so I can make some jealous white people feel better. I worked hard and am proud of what I and my family have accomplished, I will not hide my race because I know I deserve to get in no matter what everyone else thinks.

well said, and i must say, apfreak and amnesia, it's good to see that you guys applied early to harvard instead of princeton - where i'll be applying early - hopefully we're the cream of the crope among hispanic applicants to the ivies

Hispanics with 26 in the ACT are the cream of the crop??? I don't think so.

oh, guess i didnt read the thread all the way through, who has a 26 on the act?

You did not check the box? Dude what the heck!? I know AA may be slightly unfair but the fact is it ...it is a fact of life! Use it to your advantage, this may be the few times in America where actually being a minority SEROUSLY helps you. If you get in without it then WAY MORE POWER TO YA! Look, good luck everyone...we have a fateful month and a half left and I hope we all will have good news come mid December.

Yeah... Good luck everyone!

Even though many of you probably won't need it :)

Haha, well, I will definitely need it...

I have the lowly 26 but I did a retake. My other app parts are stellar though. I have decent SATIIs tho. the person with the 26 is someone else they are talking about

yes...id hope to meet amnesia too....oh please let us both be at Harvard!!!!!

dha, being a black of means does not take away your urm edge...these schools want both ethnic and socioeconomic diversity, too many people confuse the both, because every race is socioeconomically diverse

Yeah...the whole idea behind URM is that statistically a higher percentage of hispanics and african-americans tend to be below the poverty line, which naturally would affect your ability to study and excel, even if you were exceptionally gifted (which I'm sure you are).

If you're any URM but your family is making 150k+ a year and you're in a fantastic private school...there's nothing to set you apart from any white people that apply, since there's no evidence of a significant genetic difference that states that hispanics, and african americans, and so on can't be as smart as white people.

In other words, the idea behind affirmative action for URM is to identify people whose talent is there, but hasn't been given the opportunity to flourish, rather than just for the sake of letting URMs in (although i am assuming the latter does play a part in all practical considerations of the concept's application)

mrsandman, you were just asking about this. So, what suddenly made you an expert in 5 minutes?

Being a minority of means certainly does diminish the edge. URM status was made to give those OPRESSED and without the proper resources a chance to flourish and use their gifts. Unfortunately, people confuse it, and some universities abuse it by using quotas.
