UROP or Michigan Union Job or Both?!

Well, I was trying to get some options for next year so I applied to both the UROP and for a work study job.

The job is Union Arts and Programs Program Assistant which pays 8.50 an hour for 10 hours a week. It sounds really cool because you get to plan student events at the Unions and since I'm staying at South Quad that will be right next to my dorm.

When it comes to UROP, I applied so that I would get credit instead of work-study money. Since I already have a 16 credit schedule, I would only be able to work on a project worth 2 credits. The category I would pick a project from would be the business/political science or history/english groupings.

As an honor student, I thought UROP would give me valuable research experience for when it comes time to write my senior thesis. However, the Program Assistant position does play to my interests. Both are hard to pass up. Any thoughts? Which would take up more time/ be more stressful? And would doing both be out of the question for a first year student adapting to college life who has other interests as well? Thank you!

well…i worked in the union my freshman year…and next year im doing the same union job and UROP too…and im doing UROP for money and 1 credit. Because i don’t think 1 extra credit makes that much of a difference…and i’d rather get paid :)

Definitely do UROP, looks good on resume and you get paid.

Actually, the OP said they signed up for UROP for credit, not payment.

You can do UROP for money?

ya…u have 2 choices:

 1. Get 2 credits and no cash
 2. Get 1 credit and get paid

Not that I don’t like all the extra feedback, but can anyone comment on what I wrote please?

do both…that was my point :)

Get used to college first. Don’t do both. You can work on research over summers or start another semester and still get plenty done. I say this as an honors student who is well into his senior thesis (will be graduating in spring '10) having been in the same lab for 2+ years now. 16 credits equates to a full course load, and that generally means a full time job, 40+ hours a week of classes and studying. You want to get a part time job and work on research and enjoy life as a freshman on top of that?
