Urop :)

Hey, so I'm doing UROP this year (hopefully bio med research), and I had a few questions I was hoping I could get answered here...

I'm doing UROP for workstudy...besides the 1 hour class every other wednesday, will UROP pretty much be like a job for me? As in I get paid for everything I do with UROP, and I won't get any "homework" or anything like that that I'm expected to complete on my own time?

Will UROP be extremely hard to manage with 17 hours of classes? My classes are basically 13 credit hours of engineering pre reqs (chem, calc, engr 101), and psych 111. Or will I be okay? I know it would be better to drop a class or skip UROP, but I really want to keep it 17 credits + UROP.

Is it hard to find a research position in the bio-medical field? What kind of traits do the faculty usually look for when they're hiring UROP students for research? I'm never worked or actually been interviewed for a job/research so I'm kinda inexperienced and really worried about this.

Thanks for the info!

I had a few friends that did 17 hours Engineering + UROP and they came really close to academic probation. I think one had around a 1.7 after the first semester.

i doubt that was because of the UROP…

Yosup, you can probably handle it. They like to scare freshmen too much and tell them that everything is super hard and they can’t handle whatever credit load. It’ll probably be more work than your used to, but keep up on what you need to do, and you’ll be able to get it done.

If you do UROP for work study you’ll still need to take the wednesday seminar. The seminar sometimes assigns homework. But other than that, UROP should be a research job.

Its doable but not recommended. UROP will probably be another 10 hours of work. You’ll just have to sacrifice time from your social life if you want to succeed. Last year I did 18 credits and did ~20 hours of work per week (10 UROP, 7 at my other job, and a 3 hours tutoring) and I ended up with a good gpa but I can’t recall hanging out more than 2 times that semester.

There are a lot of positions in biomed (the majority actually). When hiring, the faculty will most likely look at your career interests since you really don’t have any research/academic profile to show. Also, mostly everyone coming into UROP will be inexperienced so don’t worry. Also, UROP will show you how to write a resume and get ready for interviews (although you can learn to do so online if you wish).

Thanks, and hopefully I’ll still have time to join clubs/volunteer? I think I read in a different thread that people spend around 3 hours a day out of class studying which doesn’t seem too bad…
