Anyone doing it..............I'm not sure if I want to apply. Sounds awfully....brouchure-ish to me. But what are other people thinking!!!

I'm doing it. Whats with you people on here and not taking a great opportunity just cause your so unsure. If you don't like it, I'm sure you can always find a way to stop and they'll get you out. But to do some interesting research while gettin academic credit or work study, and making a good resume for grad school??? arre you kidding me? TRY IT OUT if you want to do it. I personally think it will be cool cause I really wanan try out research. For you premeds, this is a REALLY good opportunity with michigan to do this.

Oh yea, I've heard from people that through this you can get to know other people who are interested in the same things you are and the best part is you may get to know a professor really well. I dunno about you but with the size of michigan, gettin to know a prof may be hard to do lol. TRY TRY TRY and if you don't like it, don't continue

Maybe ALEXANDRE CAN HELP US OUT ON THIS! Can you give us some more info on what its REALLY LIKE?

UROP is the real deal. It is the best research program for undergraduate students in the nation. Your first year will be very basic and not very challenging...but your second year will give you great opportunities to be at the cutting edge of research. And one of the benefits many people seem to forget is that you will work closely with a professor. Getting to know a professor so well will certainly give you the opportunity to develop a good relationship with a person that will be in a position to give you a recommendation or even find you a job or get you into a graduate program when you are done with your undergraduate studies.

there ya see, Alexandre proved my point about professors, lol, Thank You

I'm pretty sure I'll being doing UROP next year, I already got accepted. I think im just reluctant cuz i dont want to give up a class. I'm such a nerd. I'm doin it anyways though.

really, we have to give up a class?

Yeah, I was planning to take 18 credits of classes but now with UROP I have a problem. Do you have to pay extra if you go over a certain amount? (Which seems silly, because if I had known and filled financial aid I would GET paid instead of paying.)

A word of caution. Do NOT take 18 credits your first semester. I recommend a maximum of 14-15 credits. If you manage fine with that many, increase it to 18 your second semester. But 18 credits your first semester is too much. Take it easy guys. Take your time. University is the best 4 years of your life...do not rush it.

so how many credits does UROP take up? I've read that every 3 hrs of research = 1 academic credit. I don't really understand how that all plays into classes and work time, etc.

did you guys get something in the mail about UROP?

by the way, i think you can get work study through UROP too.

yea you can

umardarr- I think you choose 1-4 credits. I'll probably choose three (but won't mind working more than the expected hours).

hmmm alright. I hope it'll be cool. I dunno if being a pre-med, UROP, and working a Job will fill enough time out of my day lol, U think there will still be plenty of time to do random stuff?

Hey samwise, where did you see that you get to pick the credit amount?? Cuz if you can verify that I would be really relieved.

Can anybody just register for UROP? Are there any prerequisite stuff I have to take care of? I have the registration form that I got a while ago and based upon what you all say about this, I'm very sure I will participate. Alexandre, thanks for summing everything up in your first post. It's an attractive program. I will mainly do this for work-study ($3000), but I don't really want to give up any classroom effort to do this. Hopefully it will be dynamic, engaging work. I'm interested in Social Sciences II for the business and economics.

yea anyone can register. No strings attached :)

i got waitlisted for UROP. they said that they accept a good number of waitlisted people each year, but I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the waitlist (did you get accepted later or not?)? thx

"Hey samwise, where did you see that you get to pick the credit amount?? Cuz if you can verify that I would be really relieved."

Sorry it's been like a month since you asked, but I found it here:

So it's actually 2-4 and not 1-4. You were right about it being a one year thing. I didn't know that we get letter grades for it though. Have you heard anything about how competitive getting into a good research group is?

Thanks for that delayed but informative link. It answered some questions i had, now it's just based on the feel i get for it at orientation.

I was really hoping to get into UROP because I was almost positive I wanted to participate in the program. Unfortunately, I was placed on the waiting list. I was somewhat surprised because I have strong academic and test-score standing and I also submitted my application before the June 1 priority deadline, but I guess it was based on a random selection process (as stated in the letter)? In any case, what are the chances of getting into UROP from the waiting list? Also, when would we find out? (I'm hoping it would be before my July 24-26 orientation).
