US House of Rep. Page Program

When do you think is the absolute latest one could start applying for the summer 2011 program and be accepted?

Also, if my representative is a new member of the House and says on his webpage that he “must wait his turn to nominate a page for the upcoming year,” should I pursue nomination by another PA representative?

@stocker93, how did you get accepted so quickly?

@Jordijay23, yes absolutely.

how much does it cost ad where can i find more info about it?

It doesn’t cost, you have to buy some uniforms and such, but you are paid money. So in fact you are making a profit, :D

If you are even remotely thinking about applying, do it. You won’t regret it. Anybody interested in a summer program that you have to pay for, consider this as an option!

What courses are available through the Page School? Is it possible to take AP classes in all the core subjects?

^ Good question. The page school doesn’t offer any a.p. classes, but they do offer a range of academic programs featuring honors courses. My only concern for those who choose to fill their schedule with only honors courses. SInce class time varies depending on the House’s schedule, you are responsible for a lot of self-studying and not a lot of time to do it.

This seems like a big problem since junior and senior years are when many kids take most of their AP classes. I guess we will look at the summer program, which is pretty short but could offer a fun and educational experience regardless.

well the sessions are only semester long during the academic year. With that in mind, if you applied during the fall semester, it would be highly reasonable to assume that your school would allow you to transition into a.p. courses when you returned.
The reason they don’t offer a.p.'s is because that implies they would be teaching you a year’s worth of material in a few months; an impossible feat. However, I would like to hope that our government can maintain students at the same pace of an a.p. class.

has the deadline for the summer session passed yet?

In order to find out which congressmen can nominate students to the program for a given session, you just have to call or email each member from your state and find out. If they don’t know yet, you just have to keep calling the office until they can tell you whether or not they have been given a page spot. It’s time consuming but so worth it! Each individual member’s office sets their own time line for the application due dates, so it is hard to say whether or not the deadline has passes. A simple phone call will suffice.

For those curious about the school:

The Page School does have an incredible social studies curriculum. (Out of my 6 classes, 3 were SS). The Page School government teacher is probably one of the most knowledgeable teachers in the US on government/history. I wanted to take his Government and Politics class, but I couldn’t fit it into my schedule. I did take U.S. History from him and it was a great class. (by the way, the spring government class focuses on the judicial system and studies Supreme Court cases that effect students/schools rather than the fall class that has an emphasis on the legislative branch. This may help you if you plan to go into legal studies later on). They also have other amazing social studies courses to choose from like International Relations, Leadership, Economics, and many others (including some that they had to cancel last spring b/c their wasn’t enough interest). Think about it this way. You are one of only a handful of people in the United States who gets to learn about Government and History while looking at the Capitol Dome outside the window.

Overall, the Page School offers really unique and influential courses that you may or may not have an opportunity to take at your home high school. One piece of advice: take the courses that you really want to take, even if it means making up some of the core requirements of your home high school next year during your senior year. I’m having to take both Brit Lit and American Lit this year b/c I chose to take so many of the unique electives last Spring. It’s definitely worth it though!

does anyone know dates on the summer programs?

let me know please!

You’ll need to contact your representative for that.

Hey guys, I was wondering if seniors can to the page program during the school year. I know rising junior and seniors can apply to the summer program but I am not sure about seniors

Not technically, but it does happen. One of the kids in my Page Class was a sophomore in college, however he was still in the 16-18 age range. As long as you are in that age range, you should be fine. The school and speaker’s office do not really reject anyone if they have received a congressional appointment, so if you are fortunate enough to receive one as a senior, you probably will be fine.

@Motocrosser21,
I called various congressmen, but most of them said that I can only contact the one representing MY district for the program.

Does anyone know if the speaker of the house is guaranteed a vote?

Aren’t all representatives allowed to vote on legislation?
