US House of Rep. Page Program

I’m not sure I understand the SOTH question. Yes, the Speaker of the House can vote on anything he wants. Speaker Boehner rarely votes. Speaker Pelosi voted a decent amount. It depends, but their vote counts just as much as any other member. If you are talking about nominations for the Page Program, he can have as many as he wants.

For whomever that asked about congressman outside their district, there are no rules, so it depends only on the office if they want to nominate you. Some have a policy where they don’t nominate outside of their district. If your district member doesn’t have a spot, apply through Speaker Boehner.

That makes sense. Thanks motocrosser. I was just making sure that Speaker Boehner would have a nomination since he is one district over from me.

No problem aero. Glad I could help. Be careful not to delay as deadlines approach fast!

Boehner will be too plastered to read any applications

Well, I called around and my two closest Congresspersons can’t sponsor me. One already had someone and the other was ineligible this year. Maybe next year … if I have time :P.

Can international people apply too?

From your location (UK) I would say no. However, if you are a US citizen it is still possible. I have heard of a page coming from Austria, however she was a US citizen. Members of Congress representing territories can also nominate Pages. The non-voting DC rep can do the same.

Yeah … if you aren’t a U.S. citizen, I’m not sure they would allow you due to a) all the U.S. people who would also apply, and b) the background check/security clearance stuff.

Do you know when congressman know whether or not they will be able to sponsor someone? Everyone I have called said they don’t know yet.

That’s odd. The two I called knew ages ago; one was a “no” and the other was a “already filled”.

Do they have separate offices you can call? I called my congressperson’s local office rather than the DC one because I thought they might look more favorably upon my area code :).

I’ve called both for about 6 congressman and all of them have said no. I’m gonna be in DC tomorrow so I’ll try to ask in person.

What chaseholl said was good advice. Usually the district (local) offices of any given member handles the Page Program. So, calling them rather than the DC office will most likely be more beneficial. However, since you’ll already be in DC, it wouldn’t hurt to try.

Would anyone have any idea how soon they would respond to an application? I applied to my state senator, but I think that would not make a difference in comparison to the House. I know for sure that the senator is eligible for a page, and the due date for the application was March 31st.

thanks in advance!

Considering they’re two complete different programs, it would probably differ.

If you don’t get anything back by May, I’d call them to ask about the status of your application.

Any of you guys from new jersey and applying to the program?

^ I am  I’ve called a few offices, and I received 2 different answers:

 1. the congressman can’t sponsor anyone living outside of his/her district
 2. the congressman has not yet heard if he/she can sponsor a page this summer

Just wondering… will the federal government shutdown affect this program in any way?

1) Not completely true; some offices are apparently willing to sponsor pages outside their respective districts. Unfortunate that your sort of-local congressperson does not :(.
2) Wow, they’re really slow. That’s weird.

I doubt the shutdown will affect the page program; IDK the status of current pages, but I really doubt the impending shutdown will last until the summer.

Then again, based on how Congress is arguing over petty things when a government shutdown is going to occur in 3 hours, 15 minutes at the time of this post … sigh.

[Shutdown averted?](<a href=“Officials Tout Last-Minute Government Shutdown Deal - ABC News”>Officials Tout Last-Minute Government Shutdown Deal - ABC News)

If the shutdown would have happened (and still may), pages would not have been affected. Pages are deemed as essentialemployees, so the work aspect of the program would be unaltered. From what I was told, the LOC (where the pages have school) would have been shut down so pages would have had to go to classes at the dorm. The program would have gone on unaffected.

Hi!
so I really wanted to apply for the fall 2011 session.

is it too late to apply, and when are the deadlines?

and also, I had a question about letter of recs, so if I am going to apply to more than one senator/representative, do I need to make my teachers send those letters to every single one I’m applying to?

Thxx
