USAFA Superintendent Retiring

Today, we got an email from our favorite (and only) supe, General Regni, announcing that he’s retiring sometime later on this year. He will, however, be presiding over 09’s graduation. Maj Gen Gould of Transportation Command will take his place…

sure will miss the guy, he’s been cool for as long as i’ve known him. same true of desjardins before she left… well, whoever we get we’ll probably have for the rest of our (2012) time here…

[Academy superintendent to retire](http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123133601)

Maj Gen Gould - Prep school class of '72!

Did anyone else find the wording of his email odd?

"Today our Chief of Staff announced I am retiring from active duty."

yeah i thought that was odd... sounds kinda like he was forced out.

yeah, that's what I thought. It's sad, he is pretty cool.

I got that feeling too, but this is his fourth year at the Academy. I believe that Supts usually serve a three year tour. Still, he's been a fine leader, and one that I really respect. Anyone have any gouge on Lt Gen (s) Gould?

I actually met Gen Regni. He seemed like a very cool guy. I'm sorry that I he won't be there when I go to the Air Force Academy.

me and G Regs are pretty close... i mean, he's given me a hotdog and soda from wyomings presidents press box, i've seen him at soccor games, he stopped in my room numerous times freshman year to show off a freshman room (we lived in the hallway 5th floor b/w the two closest stairwells to mitchs, and he was a 28 grad-my frosh squad), and i've had dinner at his house.

haha. but really, he's a great guy. and really tall. lol

And he has the biggest hands of anyone I've ever met, hands down (pun?).

i don't know why gen gould's name sounds so familiar, but it does for some reason...

Bullet worked for Gould at the pentagon, Gen. Gould is a really really great guy. He actually presided over his O-5 promotion, and when DS broke his arm Gould sent him a handwritten note. He even called us at home to make sure that the base hospital was doing everything for us. The day of his promotion, he also called Bullet's parents personally since they were unable to attend. Gould has 2 sons and both went to the AFA...I think the oldest graduated in 06, and the youngest probably in 08.

His wife is active duty reservist or was back in 04, she was a Col then. If I recall correctly, her job was involved with the AFA at the Pentagon.

Just so you know, to Bullet and I, anything negative about this guy will not be taken kindly. I remember Bullet was very sad to see him go as his boss, and one time he said this a boss that he would hand over his right **** (male member) to follow him. For those of you who don't know Bullet, it was the only time I ever heard him say something like that in his entire career.

The AFA could not be more fortunate to have him. He knows how to lead and he also understands the cadet life as a parent. He is not only an AFA grad, but he is also a prep grad. I am guessing that those entering in 13 will see him retire in 11.

You are also reading too much into the retirement. As you progress through the AF, you will come to find out that people keep their retirement close to their vest until they have to start their outprocess procedures. He is now at that point. It was the perfect time to announce, the class of 13 has yet to be announced, but the bulk will find out in a few weeks. This announcement will allow a smooth transition, 09 will leave under Rengi and 13 will enter under Gould

Pima has it nailed brilliantly, as is typical. She really ought to thing about a "tag-team" ALO family there...she and Bullet. But I digress.

DO NOT read into the statement re: Gen'l Regni.

Flag officers are limited by law to 35 years of total federal commissioned service unless waivered by congress. Yes, it's a "voice vote" type thing however...it's there. For him to be leaving this summer is quite fitting, as Pima said: he's done over 3 years (it's supposed to be a 3 year tour) and it's a perfect time for transition.

Nope...I've had the pleasure of working for Gen'l Regni a couple of times as an ALO...he's GOOD people! If Gen'l Gould is of the same mould...

USAFA is and will be in GOOD hands!

Im still kinda getting the vibe that he isn't ready to retire... but what do I know ;)

talked to my AOC about it today at lunch, and that's kinda what i got the feeling of too from talking to him

flieger, not to contradict, but i believe the supe's job isn't based on time. there've been a number of supes who served more than 3, sometimes even 4 or 5 years on the post... however i do think they try to keep things smooth with a new supe every 3-4 years

Actually as Gen'l Rosa, and then Regni briefed us; it's "supposed" to be a 3 yr tour; AF option to 4. Of course, it's at the whim of the AF as to the actual length.

Gen'l Moorman was the longest at just under 5 years; all the rest are 2-4 years.

I know most of the cadets are shocked and saddened to see Gen Regni's announcement today. It is always a sad day when a leader you respect and admire tells the world its time for them to move on. I know you all are wondering; "well, we liked Regni. We're gonna miss him. I hope the new guy is as cool".

Well, let me tell you a little something about your incoming Sup. He is without a doubt my favorite boss I've ever worked for. Hands down. Not even a close second out there. I can't begin to tell you cadets how THRILLED I am for you; you don't know how lucky you are. Pima pretty much let you know how we felt about Gen Gould. I just want to let you all in on a little secret: in your career, you'll come upon bosses you admire, bosses you respect, bosses you fell "eh" about, bosses you can't stand, and bosses you go out of your way for to make sure you don't cross their path that day. But you also come across ONE boss who you know you would jump on the sword for; the guy or gal who will show you what true leadership is all about, both in the mission and with taking care of your people. The one boss who will always be your favorite, and the boss you would hope would be there for those special days in your career, such as taking command of your first squadron or the day you retire yourself. For me, Gen Gould was THAT BOSS.

Parents, I want to understand that your children who are either about to go to the academy or are there already will be under the supervision of a man who really does care about those under him. He will make a GREAT Superindent, and will always put the needs and cares of your child first and foremost in his heart and duty. He proved thatto me time and again. I could tell you quite a few stories about him and what it was like to serve under him, but I'll let you all find out for yourselves...

Like I said, you all may be sad to see gen Regni leaving, but you also need to thank your lucky stars tonight. The next guy is one of the best!

And when you meet him, tell him Bullet says "hey sir!", and ask him about Joe Montana. (pm me if you want THAT story! :) )

Oh, and did I tell you I think the new sup is an OK guy? :)

Bullet & Pima - great posts. Really appreciate your insight and reassurance that our cadets will be in very good hands.

Guys stop reading into hime being forced out. The General hit 35 yrs during this fiscal yr, he has to retire, it has nothing to do with make room or space. He hit the magic number...He was a 1973 graduate. He needs to retire before the end of the fiscal yr, which is Sept. One thing you will come to learn is the higher up you get the less chance you have to use your leave...too busy to take it. The AF only allows 60 days to carry over, that means if he use none this yr, he will have 90 days of use or lose. Back it up and he is out in the end of June on permanent leave, that is why he will preside over the commencement and then hand the reigns over.

I am sure he loves you guys, but the corporate world is calling and I am sure he has already bought his final home. Just having Bullet retire this past August it was bittersweet, but we also knew it was time. Gould will probably only do 2 yrs also. He has already been at the AFA for a long time for a flag officer (typically move @every 18 months), so I am sure he is thrilled to stay a little bit longer. I am curious if he will come back to DC, he still owns his home in Annandale from when he was here the first time.

just to add on to the closeness of me and general regni, i had dinner with him last night and we chatted for a while. who knew that the supt played fantasy football this season?!?

not fair at all.........

"give em the heisman!"
