USC 2009 transfer thread

But i had an educational leave for 4 years. How will they expect me to study and take the SAT test in time for the application. I have my trancript and all infos...I spoke t admissions and they said i have to address that issue.

they assumed you had to take the SAT sometime during highschool if you were planning to go to college, if not i'm sure they will make you take the SAT's again, despite if you have time to study or not.. they wont look at your SAT's if you have 30+ credits at another accredited university however.

Can you change your major into business once you get there?

I just applied USC for junior level transfer.
3.84 all transferable courses,
35 semester units
major: biology
Question:
I wasn't thinking of applying before because of the costly tuition. But I heard from somone that if my family cannot cover my fees, I can through the school via student loans and grants, is this true? Can I get $32k tuition + dorm and extra fees through sub/unsub loans and/or grants even if I do not have any income?
Also, what was the average GPA of transfer admitted students last year? I guess it's major dependent, but how about in life sciences?

hey alarasus -- i'm a bio major too! :)

you only have 35 semester units? you should have upwards of 45 by now i think..

anyway, umm as far as i know USC covers 100% of need.. whether it be loan or grants, but they are 100% in that area ... i'm the same way, my family has a low income and i'm not generating any income, but i'm banking on the fact that they can meet my need, whether it be needbased loans or grants..

average GPA was 3.7 for freshman, i'm not sure of the stats of transfers...i'm guessing 3.8 with specific majors higher than others

how are your EC's and your transfer essay?

I have a question for everyone though, I called USC this afternoon and they told me transfers don't get on campus housing...How are we supposed to find off campus housing thats relatively close if we get our decision by like...End of May, early June...everything will be gone

i called admission and the lady said we dont needsat ifwe studies in a foreign country. just transcripts.

I believe it's that transfers do not get priority housing. There were a few transfers last year that did receive housing, I believe.

oh kathybaby i forgot you were from out of the country..in that case, i dont know what the international standard is haha :) i'm sorry, tried to help ya out on that call

and hippo what are you thinking about housing? i mean theres a bunch of off campus housing, but i'm just afraid all the good ones will be gone by june. :(

hey zircushio, how are ya. I only have 35 units because 3 of my upper division GE classes do not count as USC transferable courses; The reason why I took them was because they seemed interesting. I'm attending a quarter based university atm so I will be able to get in 25-29 units before I transfer. As for tuition goes, I bet at least undergraduate loans will be an available option if I decide to go. Since I am thinking about grad school, the loans are going to be in the 6 figure range anyway.
So your a biology major too huh, it's a very fun major to pursue. Frankly, my first choice major is biophysics, and my alternative major is biology, but they both are relatively in the same category. I wrote a decent essay (it took me a lot of time and revisions), and I did not have much ECs.

Found the 2008 average GPA admitted for transfer students in the 09-10 USC transfer catalog. The mean GPA was 3.65. Think I might have a good shot.

3.65 was the average transfer GPA ? wow.. i'm right smack dab in the middle of that haha pushing a 3.63 now hopefully getting it raised to maybe a 3.7 by the end of spring. you're actually maybe the 2nd or 3rd biology major i encountered thats wanting to transfer, other than the 4-5 of us...i have no idea how many more would want to transfer as a bio major.. my essay took me like ... 2 months of revisions so i think its pretty good i hope, as for my EC's i have two internships coupled with the 2 jobs that i have now going for me..

only thing i'm worried about is the cost, i hope we dont get pounded with 20k loan+ per year...because that would suck big time. :( whered ya find the 09-10 usc transfer catalog btw?

http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/0910/USC_TransferBk09.pdf is where I found the catalog. I bet those transfering into sciences had lower GPA of admittance than those who went for music, film, art, or even communications. Those majors are a little bit more competitive, especially music, and are easier to get A's on than the majors in the sciences.

The 2007 average was 0.5 GPA higher, 3.7, last year, so the standards actually went down.

lol that might be good news or bad news, this year the standards might go up again haha

but i took a look at that and it is somewhat comforting -- are you applying from outside california?

Nope, in state transfer. I'm applying from a four year insitute, Cal Poly, so I may not get top priority. I know UC's really care about that, Im sure USC does, but probably not to the same extent.

Hi, guys, does USC require recommendation letters.

i didnt find the requirement on its website. but i remember there were a couple of posts here about reference letters.

thanks !!

They don't require them for transfers, but of course it wouldn't hurt at all. No forms are necessary, just a letter in a sealed envelope.

thanks ,shwayzeee .

Anyone here applying from an out of state 4 year institution? How did you determine your GPA based on transferrable courses??
