Would they take into consideration a letter of recommendation from my boss? It's not exactly an academic source, but my boss can attest to my work ethic and writing ability among other job related strengths.

as long as its coupled with a professor letter of rec. thats what i did

What if the prof. letter of rec comes in a few weeks later than the boss rec? I have a professor in mind to ask but he wasn't really my prof in a standard academic class, he was my prof for an independent study class/internship. Will they still accept that?

(I go to a HUGE 4-year public university. It's a great school with a great reputation (top 30-35 I think), but the classes are gigantic so it's really difficult to get to know a professor when there are 200-500 other people in the class)

uscASAP8: Are you asking about sending a LoR now or just some info on whether or not it's acceptable that you had your boss write one? Academic ones are preferred, but a job related one is more preferable than something like a high school reference. Only get one from a professor if it'll help your app. If you don't know the person personally, don't bother.

If you really needed one, you could've request office hours.

I don't think that I really need one, but I'm just SO nervous. There is a prof who I think could write me a pretty good letter of rec, but it wouldn't talk about my work in a typical class setting. He would be talking more about my work in an independent study course that he is my prof in associated with an internship that I am doing.

(I couldn't really request office hours since I had to go to work right after I got out of class. Most profs don't want to stay in their offices until 8:00pm.)

So... When would you be sending this? I think it wouldn't have any effect now, unless you get rejected and wanted to appeal or something.

are there any other professors that you could get one from?? because they kind of want to see how you would fare in an academic class and the teacher wouldn't really attest to that for you

but you could still send one in..i don't think it would hurt because i doubt they've started looking at our applications really yet.

I think that I'm just going to send in the two letters of rec (one from my boss and one from that prof). I figure that it can't hurt because they can attest to how much I've done this past quarter of school and how hard I worked. (It was a crazy quarter.) Even if admissions doesn't get a chance to read them because they're coming in late, oh well, at least they have the option to look at them. And I'll just hope that my grades can speak for themselves and how I can handle in an academic class.

I really think you shouldn't send them (unless they've already written them) because it's just unnecessary. USC will make their decision based on what you've sent, and if they need them, they'll ask for your spring grades.

I already sent one letter of rec, and now I am sending another one. An acceptance is not contingent upon these letters, but as far as the "subjectivity" element when reviewing an application goes, letters of rec can add a positive variable to the decision making equation. It's not too late, USC still asks for information from people that are missing some, and they will probably just throw those letters into your app pile. Also, if you have good grades, this will add another positive factor, even if unnecessary.

I still advise against it. They don't ask for it, and you're asking someone to take the time to do it. I don't doubt they'll look at them at least, but it really wouldn't make that much of an impact on their decision.

In fact, if they keep a "level playing field" they wouldn't consider it. Of course, anyone applying "could" send some in, but they're not required. In fact, the common response for freshman (who have to send ONE) is, "Only send more if they are interesting and compelling and will help your app."

TrojanTransfer?: They're adcoms. They're supposed to take to the time to look over all aspects of your application. They're not going to see an additional letter of rec as a nuisance, rather as support for a general decision they have made already.

uscASAP8: I'd send the letter. It really won't hurt you to send an additional letter of rec. but I can't say it will help you too.

shun the non-believer!

shunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

haha :P

TrojanTransfer?: why are you so set on not sending the letters in? did you provide a letter of rec with your application??

we all know it says it isn't required.

but we also all know having them helps and that's why i'm sure MOST of us sent at one or more letters in.

Send in the letters, it's only a positive.

Go ahead and send some letters of recommendations. It doesn't hurt you unless the professor hated you or the comments were really bad. They're not required but it is a way to show how close you are with the faculty (assuming you get recommendation from a professor) and a better perspective of yourself as applicant from the professor's view of you. Although the letter of recommendation doesn't need to be a professor, it can actually kind of come from anyone that is willing to recommend you.

I'm sending in three recommendations when applying for Fall 10'

I agree, send one in. The l.o.r could only help paint a picture of you to admin. Depending on who writes it, they are sharing a piece of you that the admin may not have known about you, or wanted to know more. I would say send it, but if you do you shouldn't wait..... try and do it asap.

GreNerd- dude, haven't seen you in here for a while!

zirchushio- very funny lol
