USC 2011 Transfer Thread

Hey guys you bio/biochem majors jw what science classes you took? On the website it says you can’t take upper division classes but the only lower division classes are general bio 1/2 and general chem 1/2.

STATUS UPDATE!

We have received your application, and it appears we require no additional information at this time. We will be reviewing applications through the month of March, and we expect to be able to meet our commitment to notify freshmen by April 1st. We often like to see the mid-year grades of freshman applicants. If you have not already done so, please submit your final, fall term marks when they become available. You may submit them at USConnect by clicking “mid-year grade reports”, or by visiting www.usc.edu/midyeargrades. Sometimes, in the course of our review of applications, we find that we need additional information. In such cases we will mail a written request. If you receive a request for more information, please respond promptly.

:> It’s nothing, but it makes me happy to have the official conformation that they have everything and I am in the running

^It is a good status update,(Better than any of us who still haven’t turned in our app). I’m cheering for you!

hmm… I only got a letter saying they got my application. Will they let me know when they receive my transcripts?

Hey everyone, I have a question: should I apply anyway even though I took a calculus course on a pass/fail (only class that was taken as a pass/fail), but I finished all other USC prereqs and major prereqs, AND I have a 4.0 right now.

I had decided not to apply since I read/heard that taking a pass/fail class diminishes one’s chance of admission. But I’m sort of reconsidering that decision now that deadline is fast approaching.

What do you all think?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I had already submitted Part I a long time ago when I thought for sure I was going to apply

^Are you applying to Marshall?

Yes I am, if I apply.

@afi: check under your admission documents in USC Connect. It will show up there when it is received.

@CrownoftheSea- Since you are applying for Marshall, and Calc is one of the requirements, it could affect you, but then again it might not. So it really just depends on the admissions committee. Just apply and see what happens. Make sure that you have a well written essay and short answers. Also, make sure that you have a 2nd choice major? I just feel like since you took Calc on a P/F, that it wouldn’t be fair for those who took it as a letter grade. But then again, it is mainly up to them. So they probably wouldn’t accept you for Marshall, but maybe something in CLAS since you got that amazing GPA. Then again, it will probably be hard transferring into Marshall once you are at USC. But then again, miracles happen. You probably took it as a P/F because you aren’t as strong in math, and that’s okay. We all have our week subjects. Just make sure that’s the only P/F class you take.

@CallofDuty84 - Thanks for your input. I’m actually taking the second semester Calculus for a letter grade this semester. But you are probably right about me not being accepted into Marshall. I probably won’t apply then because I don’t really want to spend that much money on something that’s not really related to my intended major.

I agree with Callofduty, in all honesty you have the stats and you probably are a really strong candidate for CLAS, but Marshall(based on what they wrote in their website) does explicitly state to avoid pass/fail, and that they do consider it in admissions process. But there is always a chance- and like I said earlier you are a strong candidate.

@CrownoftheSea - You sure you don’t want to apply? Give it a shot.

Haha, how come it seems like everyone on this site is a business major? It’s all “Marshall” this and “Marshall” that. What about the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences?! =(

Well, ok, I feel the need to share my story. So, I’m kind of an idiot and am in a slump. I’m in a pretty bad personal depression right now and I need some hope. I have a 3.688 GPA at Clarkson University (Upstate New York) and am a physics major. I’m taking enough math courses that if I were to stay here (I’m hoping to leave though) that I’d get a minor in math as well. How much does that increase my chances? Also, I’m pretty sure I completed all of the “required” (or are they just recommended?) courses for physics majors and am currently taking two more physics courses (Quantum and Solid State). Does that at all increase anything?

Also, how much of an idiot am I for waiting until today to contact my High School AND college about sending transcripts? I honestly have no clue how long it takes them to send them out (my high school was pretty small so it shouldn’t be that hard to find them and I mean if they fax it it should get to USC almost instantly, right?). But yea…with this depression I’m in I’ve kind of screwed myself over with all of this transferring stuff.

Oh, and I don’t have any required recommendations right? I mean, I’m getting one from my Quantum/Modern Physics prof, but it’s not absolutely needed, just recommended, right?

@CallofDuty84, Pinstripe - I hesitate to apply because I knew that pass/fail was going to kill my chances. However, I did put down Public Policy & Management as my second major choice because I’m also interested in urban planning and such, not sure how reputable USC’s SPPD is though. (Seems like almost everyone puts down Economics as their second choice)

I might apply still but I haven’t even touch the essay and short answers, and due date is like a week away.

I’m not sure how much it is worth it if I don’t get into Marshall

@CrownoftheSea: You definitely won’t get in by not applying! You’d be surprised how much stronger you may be than the average applicant, even with that one pass/fail grade. I say go for it, and if you don’t get in Marshall decide what to do from there.

For everyone else: I sent an email to the SCA asking about how many transfers apply and how many transfers are taken. I assume this response is the same for the other schools as well (like Marshall). The SCA doesn’t have a “transfer pool”, and will take as many transfers as the committee sees worthy. We are judged with the freshman applicants. I will assume that everyone but CLAS operates this way… Which means that we might get our letters earlier than expected.

do they require 60 credits prior transferring?
where the hell are the recommendation form, mid year report and good standing letter form?
for whoever apply to NYU and Columbia, do they they require 60 credits before transferring?

Did you guys submit proof of diploma? mine got sever water damage…i dont know if i need to submit it or just transcript from highschool is enough

Am I the only one with a missing “Admission Documents” link?

@lost you should call their office right away.
