USC 2011 Transfer Thread

Thanks @dream. I’ve been so antsy and obsessive about this application but the active participation in this thread is like a sigh of relief. :)

@monz - same! talking in this thread makes me feel less anxious, which is why I post so much. :P

:)

Hi dream! Good to see you here. Best of luck to all of you on your transfer journey.

I think there may still be a little confusion about what USC wants to see in terms of units that determine which GPA is used for admissions consideration vs. units transferred in when arriving at USC. They basically want to see grades from 30 units taken at a university or college in order for them to disregard your HS GPA and tests. So–even though you definitely will get USC unit credit for successful AP exams when you arrive as a student at USC, those credits will not satisfy USCs adcoms as far the 30 college units needed as it affects which GPAs they include when they review your application

If you would be best served to have them only look at your college GPA (due to low(er) HS GPA), I believe you’ll need to show them 30 units of college grades. If you have less than that number at application time because this is your first year in college, they look at your HS record and ask to see your spring college grades. Their intention is to see how well you can do in college classes because they realize that many smart, talented students don’t get their GPA act together in high school for various reasons.

Best of luck everyone!

@madbean brings up a good point… I’m going to email them about it.

By the way guys, I’m not adding 2nd choice majors onto this list… if you get into your second choice major instead of your first, we can just move you later and note that.

I use to post under @dbroncos23. I was involved but not a great extent. I mostly just used the thread for information especially about the whole status fiasco.

After I realized I wasn’t going to get in, the status played a role in making that determination, I started to post in last year’s USC transfer thread. I’m not applying this year (definitely next year) but I’ll try to answer questions that arise.

Best of luck.

@MitchAPalooza - OHH, I remember you. Please keep me updated on your plans and feel free to PM me whenever, since our situations are very similar. :)

If you are given a SGR, is it a typically a good sign along the lines of “we like you, but we need to make sure”, or is it more of normal thing for those who dont have 30 units at the time of application?

It’s not really an indicator of anything.

I had a dream last night that I got into Marshall…I was so happy, I think I cried a little in my sleep. I’m serious.

Like I said before, I’d really prefer my high school record to be the focus of my application. I’m taking 15 units this semester. Would it be a bad idea to only take 14 next semester so that this happens? And AP units for sure don’t count toward the 30 units?

@snizzle77 USC dreams- it happens hahaha

@ilovewriting - haha choose an extra filler class thats easy

Does USC accept AP’s that got a 3 towards the 30 units?

Also is anyone currently at a university part of a greek fraternity? Just wondering if it’s way too time consuming to the point where your grades seem to dip.

agestyxracer, please re-read post #145. In order to primarily consider your college record, you need 30 college units completed at the time of application. They want to see how you are doing in college.

All of you need to start using your common sense - AP classes were not taken in college, they were taken in high school and do not tell USC anything about how you are doing in college.

Applicants who have fewer than 30 college-units-taken-at-an-actual-college at the time of application will be considered primarily on their high school record. (And here is where your great scores on APs come in - they are part of your high school record!)

As for credit (not for considering applications, for credit toward your degree), USC accepts scores of 4 and 5 on AP tests.

madbean did such a great job of explaining it in post #145 - go back and take a look!

I will save everyone the trouble of going back to find post #145. (madbean has such a great way of explaining this so clearly, maybe it should be posted on every page of this thread as it goes along.)

@dreamupsided0wn

Sounds good. Like I said I’ll probably stop in once and while. In addition to SC were you looking at NYU again?

I’m blushing, alamemom. Thx.

USC looks at HS stats for those applying with fewer than 30 units taken at a college–if you are currently in your first year, this means you–but, in addition, they will also look seriously at college units from this quarter or semester and likely ask to see your spring grades as well.

I hope this isn’t too much of a shock, but universities look very carefully at how well you do in your most rigorous and most recent classwork. If you are having trouble in current college courses this semester, it’s time to make it work. Go meet your professors, get extra help, re-prioritize your other commitments and raise those grades while there is still time. The reason to do this is 1) it will truly help your transfer chances, but also 2) it will prepare you for attending USC and handling work there.

We’re cheering you on.

Another question:
If I get in, the only way I could go would be if I got scholarships. Will I be at a disadvantage for taking less than 30 units, even though my high school record is pretty strong?

According to the scholarship brochure, last year the Transfer Merit Scholarship was awarded to applicants with an average 3.7 GPA and who had completed more than 30 units. http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/private/docs/1112/uscScholarships1112v2.pdf</a>

Will you qualify for financial aid?

For transfers who may qualify for need-based aid:

Need-based aid for transfers is the same as for freshmen: USC guarantees to meet 100% of USC-determined need* for all domestic undergraduates. The deadlines for transfers are exactly the same as for freshmen: Feb 2 for the FAFSA and CSS/Profile and copies of tax returns by March 2 or as soon as possible thereafter. **USC determines need using the CSS/Profile so the amount you are expected to contribute may differ from your FAFSA EFC /I

FOR EVERYONE WHO THINKS THEY MAY BE APPLYING FOR NEED-BASED AID (Freshmen AND Transfers): The 2011 edition of Paying for College Without Going Broke will be available October 26th. You can pre-order it NOW (be sure to order the 2011 edition) at Amazon for $13.50 - it will be the BEST $13.50 you EVER spend because it could save you anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. BUY IT!

Good luck!

I have another question. If we don’t have 30 units by Feb 2, but we will have 30 or more by th end spring semester- is stating your SAT or ACT score on the application a must?
