USC 2011 Transfer Thread

Would anyone mind offering some input on what classes I should take next semester? This is the credit I have so far:

AP exams: European History (Category I), English Language, US History, English Literature, US Government & Politics, Spanish Language (Foreign Language). 4 units x 6 exams (score of 4 or 5) = 24 units.

1st semester courses: MTH 165 - Elementary Statistics (Math), SOC 101 - Intro to Sociology (Diversity), AST 112 - The Solar System (Category III), SPE101 - Fundamentals of Speech Communication = 13 credits.

TOTAL = 37 credits.

Remaining requirements/categories: Writing, Category II, Category V.

2nd semester potential courses: ANT 202 - Cultural Anthropology (Category II), ENG 201 - Advanced Composition (Writing), MUS 106 - Introduction to Jazz (Category V), ECO 212 - Macroeconomics (considering a minor in the social sciences, so I think it’s a good idea) = 12 credits.

I need a minimum of 13 credits to be a full-time student, so I also want to take either LNG 205 - Language and Culture (3 credits) or ARB 101 - Elementary Arabic I (4 credits). I’m really into linguistics and I love learning foreign languages… but because of my AP credit I tested out of all of my CC’s Spanish courses. I speak Russian too, so I was thinking of starting a new language that’s different from anything I’ve ever learned before… is that a good idea? Or should I just stick with Spanish?

Are there any other classes I should consider taking?

Another thing, because of my test scores and AP credit, I got out of all of the introductory composition courses at my CC. They were all sub-100, 100, and 101 level, so USC probably wouldn’t have taken them anyway. There is only one other composition course available to me, and I’m taking it next semester so I hope they understand why I don’t have two. If they really want me to get a second, I could take one at another CC over the summer… But the transfer brochure says "Transfer students generally complete two English composition courses before transferring. The second-semester writing course (…WRIT 130…) typically fulfills the lower-division writing requirement. The ENG 201 class I want to take is my college’s equivalent to WRIT 130, so would that get me out of having to take another writing class? I’d rather not have to sit through ENG 090 for a semester. :P

oops, made a mistake. I’m taking 14 credits this semester for a total of 38. not that that really matters… XD

More help needed:

My plan is to try and major in Econ and minor in either one of the following:
1.Sports Media Studies
2.Entrepreneurship

If I declare as an Econ major and get accepted, can I then join and declare my minor? I’ve heard that you cannot do that for Annenberg majors/minors is that true?

Also, if I’ve completed 63 units by the time of my transfer, that still qualifies me as a sophmore right?

P.S. I am an international student!

@MEGUCT - yes, you can declare a minor after you get in. I think the Annenberg thing is a rumor, but I don’t know. You are a sophomore as long as you have completed less than 64 credits, so yes.

Hello all other determined transfers! I plan to to transfer as well to USC. I will be a sophmore transfer from a cc. This thread has been really helpful to me already. I will be applying to the Annenberg School! Anyone one applying there?

Where do/did you live when you got to USC? I know its early to be asking housing questions, but its something that has been on my mind. What was the process like applying for housing and how difficult was it to find housing? Thank you so in advance for those of you that answer! :)

Everyday we are one step closer to Feb. 2…granted it’s pretty far away but I can’t help being anxious :)

Same. I’m definitely sending all of my materials in early…

I just submitted Part I of the application. Here are the Part II essays, in case anyone hasn’t looked yet. They are the same as last year’s. Which one are you guys thinking of doing? Last year I wrote the Visions and Voices one, and I talked about theatre and how we had to build a pool for one of our shows… wasn’t good enough. XDD I think I’m going to do What Matters to Me and Why and talk about film.

USC’s speaker series What Matters to Me and Why asks faculty and staff to reflect on their values, beliefs, and motivations. Presenters talk about choices they have made, difficulties encountered and commitments solidified. Write an essay about an event or experience that helped you learn what is important to you and why it is important.

Visions and Voices is a university-wide arts and humanities initiative that seeks to transform students’ perspectives through presentations and performances by top artists, writers and scholars. Tell us about a creative project, performance or other work of yours and how it reflects your vision or voice.

Thomas Edison failed many times before successfully inventing the modern electric light bulb. He said, “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.” Reflect on a challenge you overcame through persistence.

confused about something on the app. In Part II of the app, under Form I, it says the following regarding Test score info.

Test Score Information: Use a separate sheet if necessary. (Not required for students planning to enter USC with more than 30 transferable college units.)

Does this mean that because I am entering with more than 30 units I can just leave the full test score section blank? Or do I still have to enter test scores if I’ve taken a SAT?

MEGUCT - You don’t have to submit test scores if you have 30+ transferable units. I’m still going to do it though because my ACT/SAT scores were good and I don’t think it could hurt. But I’m omitting my SAT IIs because they were average. It depends on your situation.

Good luck to all of you. :)

Can someone explain to me what USC’s policy is for the SGR?

Question, after you submit Part I will they ask you for the check payment or do you just submit it on your own?

I submitted mine in August I think. I got a confirmation email and letter in the mail, but none of which said I needed to pay for the application. Is it b/c I put that I wanted the fee waiver? I wasn’t even sure if I was eligible for it.

its not required to submit part 1 of the application for marshall students?

@MEGUCT - I’m not entirely sure… but it seems like some transfer applicants get an SGR while others don’t. Getting an SGR is not necessarily an indicator of acceptance or rejection. It’s pretty much like the midterm report you had to do if you applied as a freshman.

@monzaaay - The last step of Part I for me was to pay the $10 fee, and I did not select the fee waiver option so that is probably why they didn’t ask you. You may want to email them about it if you don’t think you’re going to get a waiver.

@funnypunjabi - The Part I application is optional for all applicants. It will not affect your admission decision. It’s only there for statistical purposes.

@dreamupsided0wn

Glad to see your running this thread. It’s in good hands.

@MitchAPalooza - thanks. :stuck_out_tongue: Don’t think I’ve forgotten your post in my other thread! I responded to it, albeit a little late. Who were you on the old USC forum??
