USC 2011 Transfer Thread

How big of an admissions factor do you think it’ll be that I’m from a Uni in Upstate New York, all the way across the country?

@Coralgirl
If I got spring grade requested last year as a freshman then got denied,will I have a good chance this year since my GPA has only gone up since then and have fulfilled nearly all reqs

@ coolio… a lot of people like to say that if you come from a big name u you have better shot… yes thats true, IF the big name u is a leader in your field, i.e. MIT, CalTech for engineers, Harvard for business etc. if its not a leader your in the same boat as everyone else, its neither good nor bad it just is

@ transferguy… what is your major and do you have an admissions counselor that you have been talking to?

also interested in coolio’s question, except from Boston. I used to live in SoCal on military housing when i was little, which I included in one of my essays as something that sparked my interest in USC

edit: oops already answered haha

@coral
My major is comm i had a 3.65 at time of app, had an internship at koce tv station, other extra curriculars, coming out of high school I met with a counselor that helped me select classes and then.had me sign the document but she left usc and have only been talking to my area counselor since, I also applied to international relations and am a legacy

would getting in touch with an admission counselor help my chances? / how would i go about initiating contact?

@deltron
I don’t think it would hurt u building a relationship with a couselor, just go to uscs website and click on the link that says find my counselor and fill in the info

@transferguy… this is tough, USC’s discourages applying a second time because they claim that it is rarely successful. Unfortunately the trend for the past couple years and especially under the new president of the school is that legacies dont carry as much weight(unless of course your family name is up at associates park)… but here is the good news… the ones that do apply a second time and get in are the ones who get in touch with a counselor and find out why you were denied the admission the first time…call and try to get a hold of someone and ask them why you didnt get in the first time and adjust your strategy… sometimes just getting a hold of someone and pleading your case is a big boost…the counselors are part of the group that votes you in or out… does this help? i know the first part is hard to hear but def talk to someone

@deltron like i stated in the previous msg, the admission counselors play a huge role in whether you get in or not, for some schools like viterbi the people you talk to are the ones that decide your fate. call the main line and follow the prompts to get to an admission counselor and just let them know your alive and how excited you are to be a prospective trojan… also DO NOT under any circumstances come off as someone who is solely interested in football, frats or any of the other stereotypical stuff that you would associate with the old USC. and dont be scared to follow up every other week by email or phone until your decision is given… they process a lot of apps and as the crowd thins names start to become more memorable

@coral
the counselors play a big role on if I get in or not? even the area counselors? I just feel kinda discouraged cause the original counselor that I had just left USC and I was never told anything about it, kinda sucks. But I let my area counselor know and hopefully everything works out. I feel if I was SGR last year I was pretty close for as I was only a first year applicant, however I had less than 30 units at the time and my high school transcript is nothing special

@transferguy, when you say area counselor do you mean a USC employee assigned to your region of the country or someone at your school that dispenses advice about colleges. If its the former then yes they play a huge role in your admission. If you were under 30 units last year your hs career was what they focused on and if since then you have been on the rise thats a def plus… also keep in mind GPA is part of your admission consideration. counselors will always tell you they are looking for a’s and b’s. i’ve seen people with 2.7’s get in - because they were on the upswing… my overall was 3.1, because the first time i went to college i did terribly(in my second trip to college i had nothing less than an A-) the other big factor is how well will you fit in with the schools mission - community service, diversity, a desire to learn if your app and your essay reflected this you should be in good shape

I’d strongly advocate against calling the admission’s line in order for USC to attach a name to a face. This has to the most cliche statements regarding admissions. Unless the school is a small LAC, I do not see initiation contact at increasing your chances of admission.

I understand some majors such as arts, dancing, etc have more interaction but unless your majors are the aforementioned then you should not be calling them to “talk.”

These people are busy. With over 30,000 freshman applications and nearly 10,000 transfer applications do you really think they have the time to create a personal connection with each applicant? It’s understandable if you have a serious concern or question but when you call them without any real purpose you’re wasting their time.

It’s brown-nosing. If you really wanted to be a Trojan you should have articulated this in your application, not through some senseless phone calls. The relationship should be kept professional.

Hey, so i’ve been busy with school and after one week a lot of stuff goes down on this site…haha last i posted we were talkin about majors and chances. but yeah, i also got the TTP and met up with a counselor during summer, keep in touch, and like some1 said earlier, its a high chance of getting in. now, when i got it, i just assumed everyone who didn’t get in the first time around was invited this opportunity, but when i met up with the counselor, she told me its cuz USC wants me to join their debate team…i’m not a legacy, in fact, im a first-generation college student, so thts all i have to add to that point of conversation.

and totally agree with MitchaPalooza.

ok future trojans i have to get back to studying but before i leave here are a few things that i always see in these posts and what is really true:

1) if your GPA is not above X.Y your chances are slim - the truth: ive seen people with under 3.0 get into to Marshall, Viterbi, CLAS, and Levanthal. What they look for is that you have the ability to get up to pace(i.e. your grades are getting better) and how well you match the schools ideals, i.e. diversity, community service, so dont stress, obviously the higher the gpa the better the tier you get placed in

2) If you haven’t heard from school x by time y your not in- the truth: if everyone else is getting in and your not dont panic, it just means your in a later tier, you can hear back as late as a month after the time they say they will have an answer for you - i heard back the day before the deadline

i had others but i cant remember them now… can anyone think of any other ones in the next 10 mins? if not good luck all - ill try to be back during the week in the evenings

wait is the writing 140 to CLAS for people with over 30 units?

I’ve taken English 100 and English 202…

It says for CLAS: “All students must take two writing courses, including an advanced writing course that must be taken at USC. Successful transfer applicants will complete a course equivalent to USC’s lower-division requirement, WRIT 130, before being admitted.”

@Mitch
I actually do think you are correct with your viewpoint, why would Counselors want to be hounded by over 50,000 calls a week from applicants, it is absurd… Just becuase one has not had a relationship with a counselor does not mean they have no shot, if one is worthy of USC then USC will recognize that through the application and grades

@coral
thanks for all your help, i hope u come back again

@mitch… its not brown nosing…its getting your name out there(which at usc is big… there has to be at least a dozen networking workshops on campus on any given day.) yes they are busy but theyre job is to interact with students not try to avoid you…obviously dont call with the intention of telling them about your latest date or about your last trip to the mall, call and just make the contact. the counselor that i worked for would even start off the cuff convo’s with students just to find out more about them. the culture on campus is one of a small school and the trend has been to bring in people who match the universities ideals, hence the reason that the counselor would start convos with you… again not brown nosing just letting them know hey im here dont forget me when its time to vote… if you can come to a campus admission workshop… counselors give their business cards to 10th graders and tell them to call them and email them whenever they have questions… again its their job to talk to you
