USC 2011 Transfer Thread

Writ 140 is for everyone regardless of major… and is the one req that you should def take care of… most others you might get a waiver for, writ 140 is hard to get one for.

about the counselors… if you dont make contact its not a drawback but it is helpful, especially if you fall in the middle tiers of students. the top tiers are in regardless of what they do, these people are caltech, mit, harvard, etc. worthy (this group is extremely small btw) in the middle tiers its starts to get sketchy… everyone starts to look the same and if one person in the room knows your name thats a big plus, if your in the bottom tiers you should def be contacting someone cause these become very black and white decisions… again its not a break you factor but it can be a make you factor the less put together your app is

HAHA. Tiers? So if you don’t come from MIT then you’re automatically in the middle tier? Your arguments are very flawed. I’m sorry. I’ve been posting on these threads for quite some time now and I never heard anything regarding counselors or tiers.

And regarding your GPA comment? Yes, there have been exceptions with GPA but the key word is exceptions. Looking at the stats thread from last year the minimum accepted GPA for Marshall was a 3.76. The people you are talking about most likely had an unique situation such as military service, problems with drugs, family, and overcoming the struggles. The problem is with your statements, you are creating false hopes. Someone might read it and say well I have a 3.14. I might have a shot at Marshall. In reality that person has a slim chance. Sometimes people just need to hear reality.

This is not meant to call you out. We can have our differences of opinions but I just think your arguments are flawed. I don’t want to get into an online argument either because that will just clutter the useful information on this thread.

Did anyone else get the financial aid email this evening. I already turned in my css profile and fafsa; what exactly are they looking for now? The email said the deadline was March 2.

@coralgirl:

oh okay. found this.

"These courses are also listed in Part II as equivalent to WRIT 130, which is the same as the WRIT 140 course offered at USC.

ENGLISH 201; 201H; 202; 202H"

ok so I’ve already taken 202, good :)

well mitch if you dont want to believe me thats your deal… all i can say is that i applied, got accepted, got a job in the admissions office on campus, left that job to work for the person who does graduate admissions for their department. im sure your vast experience in online posting has created a wealth of knowledge that i have no way of tapping into. sorry you dont feel that my experience is useful, best of luck to you!

I agree with Mitch. We always appreciate politeness and try to avoid hurtful truth but if someone is applying for a great college then that person must be prepared for life. They need the truth to make correct decisions.

And yeah, I don’t think talking to admissions people play a huge role except in the case of a few small LACs. As Mitch said, it’s important that the admissions people keep only a professional relationship with applicant. Giving preference isn’t seem professional in this case.

I call my TTP counselor about once a month and we talk for about 5-10 minutes about my classes and how well i’m doing. it stated on the articulation for ttp that I should update throughout the year and now she probably knows who I am as soon as she hears my voice. Just saying, it probably won’t be hurting my chances at all since it’s the same counselor and not someone different from admissions every time.

CoralGirl23’s comments match the experience our D has had at USC. She was accepted as a transfer even tho her record was far from perfect, which we feel was partly because she made an effort to keep in touch with the USC counselor for her area. She also got into Cinema over kids who had much higher GPAs than her because she was able to convey to the school why she really wanted to get in & had some awesome USC profs write recs for her when she applied once she was an undeclared at USC. Numbers & stats are only part of the story and positive contacts with USC can help tip an app in a good direction.

Now if you all are done arguing lol jk, can anyone answer my previous question?

Did anyone else get the financial aid email this evening? I already turned in my css profile and fafsa; what exactly are they looking for now? The email said the deadline was March 2.

I got the financial aid email as well. Saw that it says it’s due March 2… didn’t it originally say it was due Feb 2?

Ya that’s what I thought too. I decided to come here since you all seem to be on top of things haha. I think i’ll call them tomorrow this one time, anyone have the specific phone number I should call to inquire about this issue.

@stressed and snizzle
The email is asking for Requested by March 2, 2011

Parent and Student Federal Income Tax Returns or Non-Filing Statement Forms

Sorry I copy and pasted that from my phone but basically they want your and your parents tax returns asap and all California residents should have their schools turn in their certified GPA for the Cal Grant by March 2nd

Oh okay so like faxing in 1040 forms right? Thanks btw! =)

I got the Financial Aid email too…My heart dropped when I saw the email was from USC…LOL

@stressed

Yes the 1040 forms are exactly what they want! It will help them determine our financial aid package more accurately.

Wow! Lots of posts!! Coral- what were your stats? And looking back on the threads from '10 '09 people who applied a second time got in. Probably because they had more units and raised the Gpa

@HiMom

how did your daughter go about contacting them? like when I call what should I say to build a relationship with a counselor? I feel like I’m in the same boat… I did well in hs and started well in college, but my GPA is down to a 3.5 (Viterbi’s transfer average says 3.6 i think) in part due to poor academics here (hence the transfer haha)

also, I’m visiting all next week. Is there a way I can set up an in person meeting with a counselor

Go to this link
https://camel2.usc.edu/admceebsearch/ugappfindcounselor.aspx</a></p>

And enter the info to find the undergrad admission counselor assigned to your area. Contact that person if you have questions about course selection or other issues that you honestly want their input in. My D generally conferred with her counselor about the courses she was deciding between to select those mostly likely to give her transfer credit. She also learned that USC did NOT like on-line courses for credit.

She never specifically said she wanted to “build a relationship with a counselor,” but she did want to get info that she could rely upon in choosing courses that would help her at USC.

I think nearly all her contact was via e-mail. She was careful about checking all e-mails for content, spelling and other errors before sending (no casual texting and abbreviations). She was never sure if any of the emails might be printed out and added to her file at any later date.

Thanks a lot. I think I’m going to email them later today with some general qustions
