Building a relationship with your counselor in my opinion does help. When they see your name on the application, he or she will be all “Oh I remember this kid” I, myself, have built a strong relationship with my counselor… He knows everything about the classes I am taking at Irvine, my hospitalization, and my ECS.

My D asked some general and a lot of specific questions, particularly about how coursework would transfer and help her meet USC graduation requirements. I’m sure the counselor felt s/he had gotten to know D over the course of their e-mailing and it likely helped, as it shows interest and initiative.

(SERIOUSLY, double-check your e-mails before sending to be sure you are presenting yourself as well as possible–no sloppy misspellings or incorrectly used words to give a poor impression. You want to appear to be a very attractive candidate.)

I’ve emailed my regional counselor a few times, but he doesn’t know about what classes I’m taking and the like.

Now I am just really worried that my transcript updates don’t matter and that the admissions folks will only see 15 units and see me as not ready. I had a dream about it last night. Haha

D auditioned for USC theater program a few weeks ago, got a hand written note from one of interviewes saying thanks for taking time to audition , is this a “thanks but no thanks” kind of thing or good news or do they send to all who auditioned ?
Im getting nervous for her

@sydneyral

i’m worried too. i have 17 units completed with a 4.0, and 15 in progress. but right now all they see is the 17 and i’m completing my second english class this semester. the WRIT130 req will be done by spring, but it wasn’t done when i was completing my application. I did tell USC all of the courses i’m taking this semester on my application and they know i’ll have 32 units by the end of spring.

i just don’t want to get an SGR because i’m worried about how long it will take to take care of everything. unfortunately, the administration at my CC is extremely incompetent and i don’t want it to take longer than usual to get SC a transcript.

does anyone know what the chances are of me getting in without and SGR with those stats?

pretty strong application, awards, participated in special conferences/competitions, volunteering, clubs, etc.

To which major are you applying? I’m applying to Marshall, and the admissions counselor said applicants who haven’t completed pre-requisites (business calculus, writing) prior to the spring semester will for sure be receiving SGRs. WRIT 130 is a pre-requisite to the business school, so that’ll be a big determinant for the SGR.

I don’t know about the majors that don’t have the writing requirement as a business pre-requisite. Since you have a strong application, and since you are a freshman, maybe they’ll understand that you’re following the correct pattern to transfer?

I found the Transfer Admission Information for Fall 2009 online: http://www.smc.edu/projects/25/Transfer_Statistics/USC/Fall_2009_transfer_to_usc.pdf

If I calculated things correctly, the 2-year college transfer admit rate was just under 30% (1775 out of 6000) while 4-year university admit rate was just under 20% (690 out of 3524).

This is two years old, and admissions have gotten slightly tighter, but it’s still helpful to gain some insight on the numbers.

@mikes
Is that for all usc transfer applicants nationwide?

@mikes, cool link. Nice to know I at least have an above average GPA for admits/enrolls.

And coralgirl, I know this was 3 pages ago (aka yesterday, this thread grew fast) but my college is an engineering/business school and I’m a physics major. Engineering and physics are loosely related, but do you think that would help me (coming from an Engineering school, that is)?

I just got my tax return submitted to USC…filled out the form for my parents so they can request their tax returns. Almost done with this application process! So thrilled!

Keep on top of your financial aid everyone!

What if your parents can’t file their taxes by march 2nd? My mom is lagging on hers like crazy… I don’t think I will be able to hand it in by march 2nd

I think the deadline is “March 2nd or as soon as possible afterward”. I think they’re pretty soft on that.

I hounded my parents like crazy though. Starting in December lol

do the forms only need to be filled out if we need scholarship money?

@ transerguy2011–yeah im pretty sure…but who wudn’t want scholarship money?

btw, now im curious, does anyone else know what other majors have the writ 130 as a pre-req? im a health promotion & disease prevention major and now im wondering abt that cuz im also taking that class right now, so does that automatically mean SGR?

hey everyone! a couple of quick things going through the posts

the fa emails mean nothing… someone forwarded me they fa email they got and its the same one I got last week and Ive been here for a year already and have had all my paperwork submitted since mid jan. theyre automated

writ 130/140 is a req for every major, and as i said before it is extremely important that this is done or in progress. And if it is in progress that doesnt mean you will auto get an sgr. I had it in progress when I got my decision.

to the person who asked about the physics major, 2 things - engineering(mech/civil especially) and physics are closer than you think. 2nd and I hate to say this if your really interested in a major in physics… look somewhere else. The faculty and ta staff are not that great. In fact a lot of us watch mit lectures on youtube to better understand the material.

the fa deadline is a soft deadline, but it will severely delay your award. if your parents cant do their taxes till later you can input their estimated income into fafsa and css and submit and change it later or just submit your forms and fa office will take care of it.

ummm did i miss anybody?

oh stats someone asked…

my overall gpa was 3.1, i had a something like a 2.3-2.6 when i quit school and when i came back i had a 3.97 in my major gpa so i guessed it worked out to 3.1 when it was all put together.

i was admitted with 48 units, from a socal cc, average community service work, hs transcripts were garbage… umm what else do you guys put up for stats?

i missed the part about the counselor and pre reqs. anything your counselor says about pre reqs trumps what i say or anyone else for that matter. if he/she says your getting an sgr to your particular school for not completing writ/calc then expect to get one. my guess is its prob a result of missing a lot of pre reqs. i know that i was only missing the writing pre req

and coolio i guess i didnt really answer your question, but yes it should be a plus for you, but not a guarantee obviously.

oh for viterbi applicants

[USC - Viterbi School of Engineering - Contact Us](http://viterbi.usc.edu/admission/contact.htm)

the second and third person down are awesome!

@coral
If I do not have 3 semesters of spanish completed but have all other pre reqs done for my major do you think I will get a SGR?

whats your major transferguy, maybe we can look them up… i know marshall’s pre req’s are required, viterbi’s and most of the other school only require the writ 130/140 and the others are recommended so it really depends whether theyre required or recommended…from what i have seen if your missing a couple of classes but you have a solid record so far the sgr is usually skipped

@Coral
my major is communications and international relations, I have finished all other pre preqs except the language one
I hope this does not kill me. My application was bomb besides that, I had 3 letters of recommendation, and speak with my area counselor occasionally. My GPA is above a 3.6 and am vice president of a club on campus, had an internship at KOCE, and acted as the house rep for another club
