USC Admitted Transfer Students 2008

I don’t know about that, when I was looking at USC’s curriculum guide for languages, it says that architecture majors are not required to take any foriegn languages. And When I spoke with the orientation department, they told me you take the math placement exam online, and the languages on paper. Everyone is getting different answers, this is confusing! I am gonna try and contact last years transfer admits from CC, and see if they had to do any of this.

if you log into the orientation page you will see that you have to take the math and language tests in order to complete your registration. The paper language test is only if you test to a 3rd semester proficiency (they want you to do it in person to verify that you did not cheat.

The only way to get out of taking a language is to 1) get a 4 on an AP language exam 2) test at a 3rd semester proficiency on the placement test or 3) take 3 semesters of a foreign language.

It’s part of USC’s gened curriculum

So if you already have 3 semesters of a foreign language..you STILL have to take the placement exam???

yes, though I imagine the results won’t affect you at all since you satisfy the language requirement

okay thanks

How do you check the availability of the apartments?

I’m a prospective USC transfer, so I apologize for posting on here. But for some Viterbi engineering majors, like the one I’d like to transfer into (CECS), they don’t have a foreign language requirement.

In this instance, I’d definitely call your your transfer admissions counselor to see what the workaround for this is.

BTW, congratulations to all of you! I’m so jealous. . .

Accepted. :] Yet… I have no idea what to do now… Hahahaha. In the last page of the commitment deposit form online, it says that I need to turn in my high school final transcript and Aps… Is there something wrong? Should I give USC a call? What did your guys’ say?

YOU GUYS.

so i JUST went through the orientation steps (the ones where we’re freaking out about) and for math here is the thing: if you are a major where math is REQUIRED or pretty much used a lot (this includes SPPD, etc) you will be taking the online placement test. otherwise, skip it and it will credit on your STARS that you took math either in HS or in college.

for foreign language, it told me this:
“The online Foreign Language Test is only available to incoming freshman students attending an Orientation session. Students transferring to USC are not eligible to take the online Foreign Language Test. Students requesting materials (not attending an Orientation session) must contact the USC Testing Bureau for paper and pencil test dates and policies.”
(remember, i was admitted for French, so for this to tell me this is v. important to the rest of you.)

SO BASICALLY, DO NOT FREAK OUT (unless you’re having to take math placement, and if you’ve already taken math, call them to make sure.)

i was seriously not going to be a happy camper if i had to take math/beginning levels of a language again.

speaking of STARS. Can any of you guys see your STARS, i.e. grades, courses?

sunsetsam- I’m pretty sure the STARS report will only become available after we turn in our final transcripts.

ksbr how do you skip it? I cant get to any steps past the placement tests, it says I have to complete them in order to move on.

And if we’re not eligible to take the language test what would someone like me do (I didnt take a language at college since at my previous university I tested out of it so I have no university language units.)

sunsetsam-i can only see a preliminary STARS because I sent a transcript from UCLA summer sessions from HS and they’re actually counting it so i have two majors done with prereqs which is kind of nice. i don’t have a final yet because I don’t have my final transcripts yet.

solomon-i think you’ll have to do the placement tests then. i would call about foreign language but they may have to verify by having you take placements.

hmm.. I sent in my final transcript, and they received it last week, but still no STARS for me. Lol and I realized that the “T” in STARS doesn’t stand for anything, they just put that T for “STudent” so it wouldn’t be SARS. hehe..

Quick question: Is the meal plan mandatory? I don’t wanna pay for it. >_< lol.

p.s. Just kidding, it is. =P

I’m doing pre-orientation homework, by the way, and it listed the majors that required math placement. None of them applied to me so I was able to skip it. For foreign language, it mentioned something about the test being available only to Freshmen and not to transfers. It may vary from person to person, I think.

By the way, see you all @ the July 1st orientation! :)

Did any of you guys find out about merit scholarships yet?

Does anyone know what spring grades were for people who go in after getting a SGR? Are you pretty much guaranteed in if you know that you’ll have straight A’s? What about an a A- or B+? Has anyone gotten an SGR, received a B, and still gotten in? (This could apply to this year or a previous one).

Yay!! I got my letter today, so I get to post in this thread. Anyway, are we allowed to reserve a spot for orientation before we send the $300 commitment deposit?

Nope, gotta make the $300 deposit first then wait about 7 business days (it was exactly 7 for me)

As far as merit scholarships I get a different answer every time I call. Normally the 2 answers I get was they would have decisions made by today or that they would have them by july
