@mnemom According to USC Admissions, you can get need-based aid with or without merit scholarships. If you’re not in the running for top merit scholarships, there are others you can apply to. http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1415/uscScholarships1415.pdf

First post on this site. My S had the message change over the weekend and thought he was receiving a packet. Mail came today with nothing yet but he checked USConnect and it did show his acceptance and the ability to schedule an interview. I just wanted to put that out there to check the portal and not just the mailbox. I wouldn’t have thought to check without all of the great info on this site. Good luck to all.

Congrats to all receiving good news!

Unfortunately, DS14 got the “No merit scholarship for you!” message. Unless there is a huge financial aid surprise coming, and the Net Price Calculator says there won’t be such a surprise (almost full pay), USC won’t be affordable for us. I’ll keep a watch over this thread and report our admission results in a couple of months for posterity.

Once more, congratulations to all who got good news and good luck to all waiting on a decision.

I didn’t get a scholarship. Expecting the worst hoping for the best at this point. Good luck everyone!

i’m assuming the 1,000 doesn’t include those that got the deans scholarship and other merit scholarships, so I’d guess around 1800-1900 got admitted early.

According to USC, only about 1000 were notified early. Some of those are invited to interview for Pres/Trustee (in the past about 300 for full tuition and about 600 for Presidential). Some others will receive Dean’s. But in the past, we have seen many Dean’s scholars awarded with the end of March admissions packets. In total, USC expects to admit about 9000 students which means 8000 yes decisions will be coming in 2 months. Of the 9000 admitted, about 3000 are expected to matriculate. USC has many years of watching their results and they know how many to invite to scholarship interviews to stay within target of the $$ they have to give. If all students accepted their awards this year, they would drastically reduce the number invited next year. Same with yield. As yield % increases, a university must reduce the number of admissions they send out. USC does not have a waitlist.

Madbean,

Do you know how many of the admissions are ‘spring admits’, i.e., admitted for the spring (and not the fall) term?

my daughter was admitted for the fall.

Asleep–I don['t know that number and I’m not sure USC reports it. It feels like about 200 or so. Perhaps others have a better guess? But the Spring admissions packets also come at the end of March–and some Springs may later be moved up to Fall.

@Dave_N, can’t help but laugh and think your comment was like Seinfeld’s “No soup for you.” In a time of stress, you bring levity. Thanks.

@3tallblonds, that was exactly the tone I was shooting for…

Hope it helps a little.

No soup for my S either. Still hoping for good news in March - USC is his first choice, 2d is far behind (but he has already been accepted there, though not sure we can afford it, as it is not a “meets full need” school and alas, we have lots of need).

Congratulations to all of the kids (and parents) who received a big envelope. My daughter was wondering if anyone has started an admitted student FB page . Other schools have done this and it is so much fun for them.

Off topic, but:

Best Seinfeld college reference: In the “Puerto Rican Day” episode Elaine is in a cab trying to escape the mayhem, and is getting hassled by the cab driver for being such a privileged burgeosie. At one point the cabbie says, “And I bet you went to some fancy college”. Elaine replies, “Hey, I didn’t go anywhere fancy. I went to Tufts, and it was my safety!”

Anyone here applying to the iovine young academy?

does USC mail admission letters to international applicants?

I think USC starts an admitted students page. I know my D joined it and it was a “closed” list. It actually made quite an impression as her second choice had a Facebook page where everyone bragged about their admissions status but on the USC page the admitted students were talking about their personalities, hobbies, things they had in common. She said she found herself spending more time on that page than the one for the other school.

Bumping this, 11 days until the decisions are posted online. Does anyone know how the mailed decisions are send out, just regular mail or priority like the scholarship decisions? Another question I have is what if a student applies for housing before the decisions come out to get in line before everyone else will the system kick it out? It was letting me set it up but idk if I would reject it for some reason. Fingers crossed for a deans.

Piggybacking off of yoski’s question-- do the final scholarship decisions come priority mail?

Based on past years,

Acceptances: Priority mail.
Rejections: First Class mail
Scholarship decisions for those who interviewed for scholarships: First Class mail.

Good luck to all!
