Do we know how USC recalculated GPA? That might have something to do with them not releasing weighted scores, because different schools weigh differently and we might make errors in recalculating our own gpa. I know my school offers 6.0 points for an A in an AP/IB class but I think most schools offer 5.0…just a thought, they might not want to mislead people.
@majesticmarmarr exactly! I’ve never seen it stated how they recalculate but have to assume they do. Your example is a perfect one. Our school does not weight, even APs and honors, so obviously schools can’t compare those scales.
@hzy0216 Just wondering, what do you mean by deferred? I applied before the scholarship deadline too, and I wasn’t aware that USC sent out deferrals - only acceptances/rejections.
I had pretty decent stats (3.8 W and 33 ACT) but I really messed up my senior year grades and I think that totally ruined my chances. I had an interview that went really well, and really good essays and extracurriculars. I wish USC didn’t look at senior year grades
Whoops, I meant to say 3.8 UW***
Actually, at the EXPLORRE USC for Trustee days last week, believe they said about 40% never got below an ‘A’ (although they didn’t differentiate A-, and another 40% had only ever gotten one ‘B’.
Random question but did anyone receive a letter before they applied for USC about your like academic prowess. Because I did but didn’t get merit consideration. So they are kind of sending mixed messages. :-?
@nicoleb05 What happened before merit decisions is irrelevant now. It was probably just mail they sent out in bulks. Nothing to worry about or focus on now except the decisions that are coming in the next few weeks. Good luck!
@ewhs000 Is that 6-7 AP courses counting only Freshman to Junior Year or is it counting senior year courses as well?
When does everyone else get their decisions? Want to know so I’ll know when to fill out my housing app by.
@ClassOf2020x I don’t know, it didn’t specify. However, I’d assume it takes into account senior year, as they ask for your senior class schedule and MYR.
Thanks @ewhs000
@glasshours USC said that decisions will start going out on the 23rd and they will be available on the portal on the 26th. I’m going away during spring break so I guess I will find out via portal haha. And given where I live, I would prob hear from the portal before snail mail anyway
It is waste of time to compare one aspect of your application to others, like # of APs. USC is holistic so it is everything and how it comes together that counts. Factors in your demographic, URM, first gen, essays, etc. While they say a certain % of Trustees only had one B, there are also many that had that same criteria with 10+ APs that weren’t even accepted for admission. Very true. USC is very hard to predict just looking at individual criteria.
Agreed. I guess only 3 weeks to go till I find out
I received my acceptance letter in January but I have yet to find out if my friend gets in so I’m delaying housing applications till’ then…when are housing apps due?
@dorfdude8 You should be putting down the $45 deposit (or whatever it is) to get your place in the queue. Did you do that? You can change your choices for housing selection and room mates up to a certain point much later, but you want to get a place in line. Are you not going if you friend doesn’t get in or just waiting to maybe put their name on application as a room mate? Either way, get in line!
@Hang in there @Classof2020x and the rest of you all anxiously awaiting…and if I may make a suggestion…try to keep busy and frankly don’t get addicted to CC this time of year, it will make you crazy. It seems everyone still waiting to hear has a better gpa or more of this or that, or the ones already accepted are just worrying about which housing to pick with their full tuition scholarship, which is hard to relate to when you are just hoping to get in. It is a tough time. Go enjoy senior year, there is not much of it left. Don’t spend what little time you have stressing out on cc. When you think of logging in here, text or snapchat a friend instead. You know results aren’t out until the 22nd/23rd so go live your life! You have done all you can and it is totally out of your control at this point. Good luck everyone!
I wish I hadn’t done so much research and fallen in love with USC because it’s unlikely that I’ll be admitted Over the last two years, certain events have caused the small suburb I live in to become toxic and I feel so much better when I’m not in it. But now I’m probably choosing between three schools (one likely eliminated because it lacks diversity and is not LGBTQ friendly, and the other because it’s funded by corporate and political interest to an extreme degree), and it looks like I’m left with the one five miles from my hometown. I am trying to be happy about this, go to admitted student programs and get excited for things like dorm decorating, potential courses I can take, and student organizations to join, but I can’t bring myself to truly accept it as a reality. I know that once I’m on campus I’ll grow to like it, but right now I’m miserable. Does anyone have advice for another unrealistic whiny teenager?
I know you hear this from many adults, but things really do work out. I am in my early 50’s, a mother of a college junior and one waiting anxiously to hear from USC. When I applied to college, I wanted to go to Dartmouth so badly, but I didn’t get in. I ended up at U Penn, made lifetime friends, married someone from my class who I didn’t hang out with in college, but re-met 8 years later through mutual friends from school. My son applied ED to Wash U a few years ago, got in, then hated it and transferred to Colby (a school that couldn’t be more different) after his freshman year… I guess I’m saying that students today (and even in my day) all project so much onto these schools (but the schools today sell themselves so much harder, and they’re good at it). But a lot of it is just fantasy. Whatever school you obsess over, it really really isn’t the only place that will make you happy (if it even does that). I promise you, even if you don’t get into USC, you will get in somewhere (if you haven’t already) and if you’re a person who makes friends and is generally happy, you will adjust and make that school experience a good one. And 25 years later you will look back and understand just how little perspective you have at this moment. Good luck!
@CADREAMIN Thanks so much for saying that I check this forum every couple hours and you’re right. It’s no point stressing out over it anymore. What’s done is done and whether or not I receive acceptance, I know that I’ll make the best out of my college experience regardless
