USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

Just checked my portal now my Font became “much” larger overnight. I didn’t touch anything. Now I am on board with team large font, lol. Is there “anyone” who checked today and still has small font? My guess is that “everyone” has large font now?

My font’s still small lol

Also, are the white boxes delivered by the regular mailman when they drop off the regular daily mail?

Where do you live with the small font?

@smahrf portals will be updated around noon pacific time tomorrow. In past years it’s been earlier in the day, but this year it’s supposed to happen mid-day. The central admissions office has a completely new internal system this year so has more control over when emails are sent, when the portal updates, etc.

@s0meUSCkid95, does USC give scholarship consideration to applicants whose first choice major is music at Thornton but who list a second choice major in Dornsife as part of the current batch of scholarships, or does listing music as a first choice take the applicant out of the running for these scholarships?

I live in Ohio, but theoretically it shouldn’t matter, should it?

All USC schools are able to award trustee and presidential scholarships to their students and I know that there were around 20 music admits in this first batch. I don’t think that students admitted to a second choice major ever receive merit scholarships from USC, beyond maybe the national merit presidential scholarship.

EDIT: i don’t think that the existence of a second-choice major on someone’s application has any bearing on whether or not a student is considered for scholarship or admissions. Lots of students put second-choice majors on their applications.

@SwimSwam12 Yes, the white boxes are delivered by the regular mailman when they drop off the regular daily mail.

Thanks @s0meUSCkid95. I will assume that my kid is not one of the 20 since his audition is not until February 9th!

Anyone else’s portal just have huge letters? What’s that about? Tried refreshing and logging back in but still the same large font.

@Burrowsc If you scroll through, there’s been a lot of talk about it since last night.
No confirmation on what it actually means, but I think the consensus is that it means nothing regarding your admissions decision.

size doesn’t matter.

What are the chances New York students will receive packages today?

A mid-day portal update would be a huge change… as they have always occurred at or around 12am pacific.

@CADREAMIN Just don’t get why some have huge fonts while some have normal. If it were a glitch, it seems like it would affect everyone, but maybe I’m just overthinking it. Eastern PA would receive the package today, correct?

Ha @WWWard ward, I was just getting my data on that. Here are portal update times from last four years. And during all these years they said portal update would be later in the day, then rolled them out much earlier than stated, so idk…

2018 12:04am
2017 12:18am
2016 1:10am
2015 12:32am

In the past the recipients got theirs in first couple hours and the no scholarship update dragged on for hours. So it is not an immediate update done all at once. Since virtually every other school manages that, it would be nice if USC stepped up and got them all out in timely fashion this year. You know kids were refreshing for hours straight well into the morning. Same thing in March. ugh.

^^^ indeed.

In reality, it may be finally time for USC Admissions to simply rethink its entire approach. USC is now alone in the manner in which it rolls out its decisions. Maybe they should update the portals at the exact moment that they send out the “white boxes”. It could be a simple update with congrats… the welcome package is on the way… or sorry - with an explanation.

The Ivies, Stanford, Duke, Vanderbilt, Rice, Emory, etc. all just make it simple with a portal update… with literature to follow via the mail. I know that USC cherishes that “mail box” moment for the few who achieve it, but it is becoming near torture for the other 58K+ who do not. Even a casual observer on CC over the past decade can see such for themselves. My daughter’s excitement of getting into Princeton, for example, was not diminished by its manner online. But her getting into USC was due to USPS delivery issues and having to wait nearly an hour… until like 4am here in Florida (after refreshing countless times along with tens of thousands of other kids) to finally realize that she was in after thinking that she wasn’t for quite awhile…

So the size thing…it doesn’t matter, but even if it did matter, it just doesn’t matter. Every year there is something, and the forum swirls with it, but then the posters that were crazed about it disappear and deal with the results they were given and forget all about it. You can’t get valid data from random people on the internet, ha. It is our own little Roswell. Some will believe and some won’t and in the end, nothing is able to be proven. A couple years ago it was something that went on and on that dominated the posts, it was hilarious, if I can find it or someone remembers it, will post about that one. It was a good one.

When portals are just about to update something moves and that one will matter. But it is literally just before updates so you are almost there at that point - but we are sure to hear about that one soon too!

@hcmom65 btw, you get the dubious distinction of being first to post a valid package arrival for 2019. It’s almost like getting an academy award, right?
