Are class rings a big deal among SC students / alumni? My S is considering one but I don’t believe the ring is as embedded in tradition as it is at A&M, so we’re not sure if its “worth” it. Any thoughts?
I think whether it is an embedded tradition is up to the individual/family. For us personally, yes they will get college rings. Don’t know if they will ever wear them, but they will get one.
I’ve gotten at least one job, a few business clients, and even dates with my traditional ring; it’s the ice breaker-gift that keeps on giving. Fyi, I’ve got a military background, an uncle and nephew were/are at West Point, so admittedly it’s a guy thing, military tradition too.
Agree with SeattleTW, it is a great conversation starter and even if he doesn’t wear it for a period of time, there will be times in his life that he will be glad he has it and wear it proudly. If you don’t get it now, you likely never will. My son’s USC NCAA Championship ring is always a huge hit at any event!
We were looking at the traditional one versus the signet style today. Signet looks classy and subdued, but traditional is obviously much more eye catching, an well… a traditional college ring. Do you all recommend traditional?
Traditional, even guys like the bling!
I tend to lean toward traditional because they are eye catching and traditional it just seems like that is the ring you are supposed to have, however they are bigger looking than the signet which may be more suited to a smaller frame (skinny) type guy. So maybe he would wear the signet more and it is a really good looking ring, maybe more for today’s tastes… However, skinny college guys may or may not be that as they get older … what does your son think? My traditional values would want to go traditional an no doubt they stand out more, but I am thinking the younger crowd may like the signet more so I would defer to what he wants. Ya, this may not have been helpful, sorry!
I always thought rings were unnecessary expense, until I was at some hole in the wall place on a mountain in another country and someone noticed my brass rat from MIT. So yes - USC kid will get one. Whether she wears it will be up to her. But showing alma mater pride is kind of fun. After all, you paid for those years - wear the status with pride.
I can spot the rat from a mile away since I’ve had quite a few MIT friends and associates.
Our rings, as you know, have a small Tommy Trojan that’s somewhat noticeable…
