Does anyone know if there is an insurance plan to buy that is cheaper than the school's Aetna insurance which is $500 for Fall and $745 for Spring/Summer?

You will have to do some real digging. If you are a student, your best bet is to be on a parent’s plan. If that is not possible, you will need an independent plan which is very expensive. We have private insurance and jumped at putting S on USC’s plan. D is on this plan at another University and it covered all but $200 when she was hospitalized in her Soph year with breathing issues. Aetna has a very good reputation as a health insurance company - it does seem expensive but honestly, premiums everywhere have really gone up over the past two years and this is a good deal from what we have to choose from.

Compared to purchasing individual insurance, this is a very good deal. Individual policies will improve in their coverage once the health care law goes into effect but at this point, they are not as good as group policies like the one offered by USC. Please don’t try to skimp on your health insurance; just because you are young and healthy is no guarantee you will be okay. One of the victims of the recent shooting in Colorado who is hospitalized has no insurance and is facing monumental hospital bills.

Whatever insurance you MAY consider, be SURE it meets USC requirements for a waiver or you will have to buy the USC insurance anyway.

For many of us, kids under 26 can be included in our insurance plans at no extra charge. That is why we are able to complete a form & get a waiver of insurance every year for our kids. When our S was aging out of our plan, we did find the USC plan the cheapest for the coverage it provided & bought it for our S (though never made any claims). The insurance we bought after that was about $400/month, so MUCH higher. Now, he’s covered under our plan again, since the law changed allowing him to be covered since he’s under 26 years old.

Agree that it’s crucial to always have insurance coverage & know what it does and dose NOT include.

My health insurance waiver was denied. According to USC, maternity coverage for dependent children is excluded under parent’s group health plan. Waiver request would’ve been accepted if I were a male! HA! Anyone else had this happen?

wait so if you use the USC student health insurance is the total amount you pay for the health insurance a year $1,245???

what about the months out of the year that school isn’t in session?

Summer is included in the $725 Spring cost as its $200 more than Fall insurance.
