USC Spring Admits 2019

D is a spring admit

  1. Is NMF pres scholarship good for 8 semesters? If the student goes into fall semester year 5, is the scholarship still valid, or do you just lose the value of the scholarship for 1 semester.
  2. Can the entire value of the scholarship be applied for the spring semester?
  3. Can the NMF pres scholarship be applied to fall semester if the student goes abroad?

Here is an excerpt from the scholarship email received yesterday, emphasis added by me:

So my interpretation is:

  1. yes, it’s good for 8 semesters, including fall semester in year 5.
  2. Do you mean the value of total 4-year’s worth? I highly doubt that. Plus the 4-year total would exceed one semester’s total cost.
  3. That’d be very sweet. But I doubt this one too, since you are not going to register at USC. And the award says “beginning spring 2020”. Good question to confirm during next month’s visit.

A follow-up question is, whether half-tuition can be applied for summer? Or is it not worthwhile to use it for summer since perhaps summer tuition is much less already?

For question 2, I meant the value of 1 year used for just 1 semester, the spring semester. Would be nice, but I think thats a no, based on your excerpt. Filling out the 4 year plan on the school’s website, my D should still be able to graduate on time b/c of AP credits, so was wondering(wishful thinking) if they get a full year’s worth of scholarship for just the spring semester. ?

@jumboslug got you. Is there a place on USC website to plan out the courses for next 4 years? Would you mind sharing the link? Where can we find AP credits information, is it major-specific?

@OneAndOnlySJ

As for APs… here’s the link: https://arr.usc.edu/services/articulation/adv_placement_exam_credit.html

You can look up any program and the degree requirements from this link…

My D got into Marshall. Here’s the link for Marshall. Not sure about the other colleges, but I’m sure they have something similar.

Very cool, thanks @WWWard and @jumboslug!

you’re welcome, @OneAndOnlySJ

FYI, we are able to see FA information on the portal. It shows the breakdown for Spring 2020 semester.

Was wondering if FA would breakdown Spring. Thanks @OneAndOnlySJ

@mtn1234 - We don’t have experience but are wondering if you ever got any more information on your question re a full gap year. We are in the same position with our D. Thank you!

@collegedad2 - we have not really looked into a full gap year at the moment. My D will attend the Spring Explore next week and talk to some of the advisors about some of her previous coursework. She has taken 5+ university classes already and if some of those transfer, she could easily be done in 3.5 years. With the $$$ saved, she could go travel after ;). Anyhow, we’ll still talk to the advisors about a full gap year… I’ll let you know what they say!

Housing - Any previous Spring admits care to share their good/bad housing experiences (on campus)? I’d be interested to know how often Spring admits get paired as roommates (don’t think it happens often).

I spoke with the housing office, and like some have already posted, it’s pretty much whatever is left. There is a questionnaire, which they try to use, but they’re limited to availability.

Edit: There’s already great info in this thread. Hoping to hear more anecdotal experiences.

I applied to The Keck School’s Global Health major amd was admitted, however for Spring. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA, 5.9 weighted GPA, 36 ACT, several leadership positions, and over 400 hours of community service. Was I likely admitted spring because of the program I applied to? Should i switch my major to something in Dornsife in order to better get a chance at fall admission? Thanks

My daughter applied Richmond, The American International University in London and got accepted as USC spring admit student. She also received $4000 Chancellor’s scholarship from that university . The tuition and room is $24800, so we will pay $20800. Its less than we would have paid at USC if she was not a spring admit. Any one here will go to London for Fall?

I am a USC spring admit. I did the IB programme and received scores of 7, 6 and 5 for my higher level subjects so I have gained IB credits that will transfer. So will one of the study abroad options still be useful to me during the fall this year???

@futurestudent66 You really need to discuss that with an advisor who can compare what you are bringing in to what you could take there. Also depends on major - the abroad programs don’t always work well for engineers for example, particularly if you are bringing credits in with you. But again, verify with your USC advisor.

@futurestudent66 Congrats on your IB scores! One great thing with IB HL scores of 5 and above, if they are in the subjects that USC gives credit for, you get 6 units each for those vs. 4 for an AP. As for your fall, you don’t have to do the overseas program. You can do whatever you want, but even with units from IB, I’d recommend working to get some GEs in to make navigating coursework for your major easier. Many spring admits go to a local community college (check with advisor on articulation agreements for GEs) and many also come live in LA and go to Santa Monica college and go to football games and such. Others do go to the overseas programs. Lots of options there.

Anyone going to study at London this fall?

@futurestudent66

I don’t remember reading about someone studying in London this Fall, but I certainly could have easily missed it. I have heard great things about the study abroad option at LSE. Will you be going there for Fall?
