USC Spring Semester

I read that USC admits some of the borderline freshmen applicants for Spring 2008...

do you know someone who got into USC's spring semester? Is there a way I can find the general statistics of Spring semester admits online?

No, there is no general place where they list the Spring Admits. However, it is important to note there isn't that much of a drop-off between Spring Admits and regular admits. I think it's too early to worry about this: 75 or 80% of the acceptances have yet to be sent out!

Last year there were one or two people who got in for Spring. Search through the archive from posts in early to mid April.

actually, i think it's less than 20% of people who know right now. usc says that 20% of the freshman class received scholarships. that means 20% of those who matriculated, not accepted. i think the matriculation rate is 37%, so assuming my logic is correct, about 7% of acceptances have been sent out.

I know one person who was a spring admit, that actually really enjoyed it. He got to get a ton of general education courses out of the way and have a blast partying before he had to start his major courses in the fall.

Bluebeard, what about students who are offered scholarships but choose to attend elsewhere? Does USC have a system where they assign that scholarship to another student or no? If they don't have such a system, we would have to know what percentage of students who are offered scholarships matriculate, not just the matriculation rate of the freshman class as a whole.

i'm not sure about those numbers, but my estimate is probably pretty close, because most people who get scholarships will attend the university, i would guess.

^Actually, because USC is a pretty decent school, those who recieved scholarships have the stats to attend bigger names probably. Also it doesn't take into account scholarships are sent out in "waves"...

But that's besides the point.

The point is, don't worry. Basically nobody on the grand scheme of however many applicants they get has any idea if they're in or not. If you are borderline overally for acceptence statistically, you might be looking at Spring admit.

The direct quote I'm reading is "21% of our undergraduates receive merit-based scholarships of some kind." I take that to mean currently enrolled students. I dunno, maybe I'm interpreting it wrong.

I thought all of the Trustee and Presidential scholarships are sent out in one big wave. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Wow, I didn't realize that that many people got admitted to Spring. I thought it was more like 50 or something.

"I thought all of the Trustee and Presidential scholarships are sent out in one big wave. Someone correct me if I'm wrong."

Really? Huh.

Well, I don't know.

I just figured since only people in SoCal got letters, there were a ton of people who wouldn't know about scholarships at least until the mail arrives.

So I guess for us east coasters that means if we don't get anything next week we're out of luck there? :(.

Yea, well I mean one big wave when it gets sent out, not when it arrives.

If you don't get your acceptance within a week, it's almost certain that you haven't gotten a scholarship. USC also sends a "scholarship rejection" letter to let you know of your status. You can still be admitted without a scholarship though, and THOSE acceptances come in waves all the way up through early April.

i got my letter yesterday. is it possible that i'm not being considered for a scholarship?

No, I am almost certain you have a scholarship if you got your letter this early.

yay. i told my parents that me getting a letter this early meant scholarship and they didn't believe me.

I had a friend who didn't get her acceptance early, and didn't interview on campus. However, she did receive a Presidential Scholarship. Take this with a grain of salt, however, because she also got into Stanford, and was a National Merit Finalist. She did get the scholarship, though.

Yea, they give automatic half-tuition to National Merit Finalists without an interview or anything. I forgot to mention that.

Last year, "D" received a letter at the end of January stating that although she was not a final candidate for a scholarship, she was still be considered for admissions. So, anyone who hasn't received a letter like that is probably still in the running for a scholarship. The next letter she received was late in March and it was her admissions letter.

as a spring admit myself (and the administrator of the facebook group you mentioned), i have to say that being a spring admit is nothing to worry about. the kids i know who are spring admits have stats equal or higher to fall applicants that were accepted. the entire process of spring admission is completely random.
i would call your particular school and ask about spring admission.

my guess is..sometimes kids have borderline stats, and sometimes there just isn't enough room left in that particular school @ USC, which is why they give the student spring admission.

just to let you guys know, not all the early waves were just for people who got scholarships
i received an acceptance letter early feb and i didn't apply for any scholarship...if i matriculated i would get the presidential national merit scholarship, but i don't think that counts b/c it is not a scholarship u apply for
